I watched the Big 10 Wrestling Championships over the weekend and man the Big 10 is loaded this year. I suspect many of these guys will win the NCAA's in a couple weeks. Ohio State's Sammy Sasso won at 149 pounds. Dude is very good technically. He had a slow motion reversal that was clutch. Didn't panic when he was got down early to Ridge Lovett of Nebraska.
Iowa is loaded with Spencer Lee, Jaydin Eierman, Alex Marinelli and Michael Kemerer all winning. The Buckeye-Ethan Smith lost to Marinelli 3-2 in a tight match at 165 pounds. Marinelli won his 3rd Big 10 title.

Iowa's program is in another universe. They all possess tremendous quickness and amazing wrestling knowledge. Saw some reversals that had my head spinning.

Sportsjock, did you see Sasser’s match in the NCAA finals. First he wrestled great and I thought for sure he would win. The guy from NC St had a odd takedown in the 3rd period. Very Roman-Greco. Then I thought Sasser secured the takedown in the final seconds to win it. He touched both legs and the guy was sitting on his butt. Too bad they didn’t give it to him but, I didn’t hear a real good explanation as to why.

Like in football you can't teach speed and in basketball you can't teach height. In all three you can teach technique.

I haven't followed OSU wrestling too closely but do remember their '22 class had the top 3 overall ranked recruits in the country. Have these recruits not panned out to be as good as the rankings?

What kind of moves did he do to win? RKO? Chair to the head? Jump off the top rope? Lol.

What kind of moves did he do to win? RKO? Chair to the head? Jump off the top rope? Lol. It's honestly a little bit sad that really good college wrestlers only have the Olympics (wrestling freestyle or Greco) or some garbage like the WWE entertainment as an option post-NCAA or post-NAIA. The amount of time and effort invested in the sport with little financial reward makes it difficult to understand sometimes, however I believe now as I always have..... wrestlers are wired just a little different than other athletes. The amount of time, blood, sweat and tears invested is second to no other sport and the reward in this sport is first and formost internal.... no one else is on that mat when you are getting your *** kicked, and there's no one to save you in a match. The physicality alone makes it intimidating as a sport. The idea that you can take another person to the ground, and control them in order to pin them to the mat thereby removing their ability to stop you, makes it the ultimate combat sprot in my book. The only thing even remotely close is MMA, which wrestlers are normally very good at. It's also a team sport, but more importantly an individual sport first. You can be the worst wrestler on your team, and have a losing record, but still be a national champion if you are on the right team at the right time.
I can go on, but it would bore those who have never donned a singlet or wrestling shoes or headgear and stepped on that mat to face the ultimate physical challenge...

The most successful wrestlers are usually very intelligent. There is a good deal of physics involved in wrestling. The push and pull of 2 human beings is undeniable in this sport. The great ones have an instantaneous "feel" for when their opponent is going to make a move in one direction or the other. And his mind knows(has a feel) for the counter action naturally. If this "feel" is not immediate, you lose. Quite cerebral, only realized by those who have worn a singlet.

I don't know. I watched a few BIG dual meets and the BIG Tourney so far this year. I'll probably watch the NCAAs but I don't know too much about the Buckeye squad. I think a lot of freshmen are red shirted in wrestling.

I see Bo Nickal (former 3 time NCAA champ from Penn St) is going to try MMA. I think his debut pro match is this summer.

Our congressman Jim Jordan admits he majored in wrestling at Ohio State, even though he got a degree in Economics.

Those who "wrestle" in the WWE MUST belong to the Actors Guild, the same union the actors in hollywood belong to. Those who participate in MMA do not. I really shouldn’t have called it garbage. I have a kid who wrestled for me many years ago and is now out of college, where he was an all American in NAIA wrestling, who is now wrestling in a local "wrestling entertainment" group in the Kansas City area. I’ve watched a bunch of his videos and he’s very good and he’s no taller than about 5 ‘8”. He’s actually kind of a terror in the ring and fun to watch, and most recently their Light Heavyweight division belt wearing Champ. I attribute a lot of credibility in what he learned as an actual wrestler on the mat. However, at the end of the day, I have much more respect for the actual time spent wrestling competitively, than wrestling for entertainment. It’s two different animals. He was a state runner up here in Michigan who upset the state champ in regional finals and one of the damn nicest kids ever.

I know it’s the first full weekend of the March madness, but tonight the NCAA wrestling semifinals are on and just in the first two weights at 125 pounds and 133 pounds there were two huge major upsets. The semi finals this year have already provided as much as entertainment as the entire final program did last year at 125. The longest winning streak in the nation ended in the semi finals as the fourth seed from Purdue upset Spencer Lee, the number 1 seed from Iowa in a pin in the last 10 seconds of the match. At 133, number two seed Daton Fix got upset as well, and the number one seed, Roman Bravo-Young was a near upset winning in Sudden Victory overtime. Absolutely amazing…

Just finished watching the NCAAs. The Spencer Lee pin, the RBY and Real Woods loss in the finals were very surprising. Sammy Sasso from OSU wrestled well and lost in the finals 4-2 to the four time champ Yani from Cornell. Usually when someone gets the single leg on Sasso he can turn it into a takedown for him. But that didn't work on Yani. Of course Penn State easily won the team competition.

Well Ohio State has the NCAA champ at 141-Sophomore Jesse Mendez. Another Buckeye, Rocco Welsh made the finals and lost to Carter Starocci (4 time winner). Aaron Brooks from Penn State also won for the 4th time. There were some pretty good matches. I did not know they changed the scoring and now a take down is worth 3 points. A reversal is still 2. I think it made the matches more interesting. Has high school changed also?

They also have changed near falls to now be worth 2, 3 or 4 points depending on how long the opponent is in the near fall position. It used to be 2 or 3, then I changed to 2 or 4, and now to 2,3 or 4…. Not sure if I like either change so far… I still catch myself yelling “Twooooo!!!” when a wrestler hits a late Sudden Victory takedown!! 😆
