Here is a new discussion to replace the old one. Galion graduates quite a bit of talent in a few weeks including Fryer, Barnett, and a lot of line talent. Gonna be tough to replace.
Here's the schedule again: 8-26 BUCYRUS 9-2 Cardington 9-9 Keystone 9-16 Buckeye Valley 9-23 JONATHAN ALDER 9-30 MARION HARDING 10-7 River Valley 10-14 FAIRBANKS 10-21 North Union 10-28 PLEASANT
Thoughts?

Galion goes to the playoffs 4 straight years with Hawkins and when he leaves there is an over whelming feeling that they will be, at best, 5-5.

I personally think 4-6 or 5-5 is about right. There should be at least 4 wins on that schedule.

I know you guys thought you could get rid of me, didn't you? I'm baaaccckkkk!!! Ha!
I think the problem we will have trouble replacing is Barnett at running back. I personally think we are going to have a better offense plan than last year. It's going to pass-pass...pass. You will see the quarterback run more this year. He's going to be a load. He's about 20 lbs heavier this year and stronger. I think you will see some young receivers really step-up this year. You will see a couple really emerge as standouts too. Plus we have our leading receiver back, Harrison Ivy. We are going to be able to put up A LOT of points this year, if my prediction is right. If my prediction is wrong, our quarterback will be under intense pressure all season long and our whole offense will be disrupted. I sure hope that doesn't happen. I'm worried a bit about losing so many seniors on the line...like everyone. That's a BIG concern of mine. Plus I haven't heard on how capable our running backs are going to be, but if we open up the passing game it will help who ever our running back is tremendously.
I got faith in my team. I predict a 7-3 season...maybe slipping into the playoffs..maybe missing the playoffs. The first 4 games are going to tell me what type of team we will have. We "HAVE" to get the first 3 games though, no excuses!!!

I think they would be wise to run an offense similar to Triway and Kenton where the QB pretty much throws the ball on every play. Inexperienced linemen will be a problem though. I see 4 wins for sure on the schedule. I think the soon to be defunct Red Division will be tougher than last year though. There is no doubt the kids are used to being successful. To me they can make up for inexperience with better fundamentals.

I can easily see 5-6 wins here. This schedule isn't exactly murderers row. If we can somehow get adequate line play and Ivy's knee holds up we can compete in 7-8 of these games. JA and RV will smoke us for sure and MH scares me as well. Replacing Barnett and our entire line are the main issues I see. Keep in mind, Barnett was a 2 way player and essentially lead our defense as well.

I did not see Triway but I know the Kenton offense revolved around a throwing QB who could scramble very well and get up field if needed. Having a sluggish QB would not be as affective.

To be fair Kenton had a succession of D1 qb's that is virtually unparalleled in Ohio hs football history. They would have thrived in most offensive systems. Dover and Ashland also run this type of offensive system. To be successful the qb does not need to be the most skilled runner on the field, he just needs to recognize when to take off and not take a bad sack for loss. Oftentimes in a spread offense just getting the ball to the los and being 2nd or 3rd and 7-10 can be a successful outcome. Galion's qb is not sluggish but when your on the field with Barnett and Fryer you tend to look slower than you might actually be. You're talking about all state track athletes here.

Triway ran almost the same kind of offense that Kenton did. And my point is we have a qb with a good arm and if we have trouble running the ball especially with an inexperienced line, why not run something like that. It seems it would be the best utilization of athletes.

Can't speak for Triway, but Kenton was successful with that offense due to having the head coach's SONS playing QB. They were fast, very quick, great scramblers and completed a very high % of passes on the run. Also they were the teams best runners. If coverage was good, the QB would take off and run for 1st downs OFTEN. Both played DI college ball. Does that describe Galion's QB?
So much success with the offense, that they NEVER punted, ALWAYS went for it on 4th and anything, anywhere on the field. AND they ALWAYS onside kicked. NEVER deferred at the beginning of the game, he wanted the ball. The head coach didn't care if the opponent scored, he knew they could outscore them. He did everything and anything to keep the ball in his QB's hands and get the offense as many possessions as possible. Last point, that offense was run all the way through his program for ever. VERY difficult to implement with success overnight.

I get what you are saying ghs1999 but the offense really does require the QB to be able to keep the opposing defense honest and make them pay with his feet when they take all of the receivers away. Both Kenton QBs could run a 4.6 40yd dash and from highlights I would guess Carmichael could do the same for Triway. I believe Cook is rated at a 4.85 which can be considered sluggish for a spread offense QB.

Just listened to radio show on 92.7. Coach Dick was on along with Coach Roston and the new offensive coordinator Mike Marshall. He comes from Madison, so it will be interesting to see what kind of offense they run.

My son (QB) isn't known to be a scrambler. He lacks the true speed. He ran a 4.85 40-yard dash at only one camp this year (out of the 22) we went to. I don't know how big those other quarterbacks on those other teams. I know Carmichael from Triway (at Ohio Dominican now) is small though. I'm sure the ones at Kenton where BIG though. I had an opposing coach of one of our playoff teams tell me at one of our camps as long as a BIG QB can run a 5.0 in the 40-yard dash; you will be ok in high school football. My son is 6'4" about 211 now..up from the 194 weight of last year. He's bigger and stronger this year. He is elusive though, and he has some HUGE hands and a wingspan of like 83 inches (I think that is correct.) All I know at the Youngstown State and Bowling Green Camp, at the time he had the longest wingspan. That's good for stiff-arming someone, so maybe he doesn't need to be that fast. haha!
So I guess we will just have to wait and see, I don't know what type of offense we are running. I'm sure we will throw a lot. I don't think its an offense like Kenton or Triway though. Of course I would love for it to be, but from what I've seen at practice it won't be. We are going to try and mix it up. I will say this from the one practice I've seen; we look to be pretty fast in coverage. We have some talented receivers, probably more than last year. We might not have the speed of a Fryer or Barnett, but we have both of the Ivy brothers coming back. Both of them are track stars. We have a HUGE lineman (Big Show) who didn't play with Galion ever, and we have another 6'1" receiver who didn't play last year. So we are going to have weapons. My question will be can we come together as a team, make the tackles, get off the blocks and execute on offense. I think we are going to be ok. I want to see how we do against Madison at home next Tuesday, and then our first scrimmage at Centerburg next Saturday. That way I'll be able to evaluate us better. I still say we have to win our first 3 games to have a successful season. Also my son (I think) is going to play linebacker this year or some form of it. We have another kid who is a linebacker, I'm impressed with that kid; he's gonna be good. He's a receiver too I think. Go Tigers!!!!

...but in my son's defense. He can spread the field like no other quarterback. He can stand still at the 50 yard line and easily make it to the end zone. I would think that would make up a bit for speed in some sense, as long as your lineman can give the quarterback a couple more seconds to release the ball. Parent's at all these football camps would come up to me and say, "Your son just flicks his wrist and the ball travels 40 plus yards." Chase has always had that ability. Of course now, I wish I would have pushed the speed issue more and gotten him personal training on it. It's a little too late for that now. I guess he's just got to make the best of it. He does need to work on his ability to find his open receivers faster though. That's a concern of mine this year. Plus he needs to step into his throws by planting his back foot. I think he relies on his big arm too much. I hope the coach works on these issues with him.
*** sorry about the addition add-on...just a proud father who can't wait for football to start. I'm soooo pulling for this young group of boys. Go TIGERS!!!

He just has to be better this year and be a leader for this young team. This team has talent on it. I'm excited about our direction our new coach is providing. This should be a fun season...win or lose. I heard Galion has a young group of boys coming up who are very good. I wish them the best.

My comments were not to take anything away from your son but only to point out that when Kenton and Triway ran their offense the design was if the defense took away all of the recieveing options the QBs job was to make plays with his feet. Many times that is were Kenton teams were dangerous. They could throw for 4,000 yes in a season but they were also potentially a 1,000 yd rusher. Best of luck to your son and his team. I'll be looking for highlights.
Sorry for the misspelling of the name. The correction is Cooke.

galiontiger, I just watched some video of your son playing quarterback and, what looked to be, outside linebacker.
First of all, I can see why you (and maybe some in Galion) are nervous about the offensive line. They were impressive, giving your son time to throw and 'standing up' the defensive ends.
And second....wow. Just wow. What an arm! And earlier in this thread, you said that someone said your son seems to 'just flick it'. The scrambling play in the video I watched (the opponent wore white, with what looked to be orange and black) was a stunning example of this. And, according to the video, zero interceptions his junior year. Absolutely remarkable!
You deserve to be a proud papa. Your son is impressive!

I'm sorry to ask this stupid question, but I don't trust my colorblind eyes.
Are Galion's colors orange and blue? Like the University of Illinois?

Scooter..never any offense taken. I love hearing from people who really know football and the area players. I've always had good responses from you guys on here. Last year, I did have one guy who just hated me talking about my son. He really took issue with it. He was EXTREMELY nasty about it to me on here too..pretty shocking to me. He was from Galion too. That guy didn't really bother me either though...even him. ha! I just laughed it off..most of the guys on JJHuddle stuck up for me too. I know everyone has their opinions, and I respect every one of them. I've never eluded to anyone on here that my son is fast. I heard stories of the those quarterback at Kenton, esp. the brothers who play college ball. Kenton has had some amazing quarterbacks, if my son ends up doing half of what they accomplished in their careers I'll be very happy.
umbrella0306...thank you for your wonderful comments. Chase only lined up on the line like that last couple games and the the playoffs. He wasn't really a linebacker. He played corner most of the season. They didn't want him playing end. The coach was worried someone who try to hurt him (blocking in the back of his legs). This season I don't think they have much choice in having to play him with the team being so young. I don't know exactly where at, but I heard a linebacker of some sorts.
Yes, Chase didn't throw an interception in the regular season. He did throw one in the playoffs, but those stats I posted were only from the regular season. He got VERY LUCKY in the regular season. He should have had like 2 or 3 for sure intercepted, but they dropped them. But still..I doubt most quarterbacks in H.S. didn't throw one interception in the regular season and threw what? ....120 passes. I know he's gonna throw some this year. ha!
Yes, the Galion Colors are white/orange and blue. I thought my son said there will some gray in the their uniforms this year. I could have been half-asleep when he was telling me that though. They are getting tiger stripes on their helmets this year. The parents are going to help put them on. Very cool.

galiontiger said: "I don't know exactly where at, but I heard a linebacker of some sorts." - If they're worried about the possibility of 'blocking in the back of the legs', have the coaches ever considered him for safety? Free or strong?
Final question - what about special teams? Is he there as well?
And thanks for answering my stupid question. You'd be surprised how often I read hostile responses over questions like that. And you were pretty cool about it. Thanks!

What I meant was...I don't know if it was inside or outside linebacker, he will be playing. I think he might be the punter. I honestly don't know. I've only watched like 2 hours of a practice the other day. Remember we have a new coach this year too. It looked like an outside linebacker to me. When they were worried about him, it was last year. They thought about him playing as defensive end. We had a safety last year. He's too tall and slow to play safety, I would think. His perfect position would be as a linebacker or as a defensive end, because of his height and his reach. He's got HUGE hands too. He should play really physical this year. I think a lot of people will be surprised on how better he is defensively this year. I remember years ago as a freshman and as a sophomore; he would get burned so bad. He was a terrible tackler, but times have changed, especially this last year. We will see how good he does this year. I honestly don't have a clue. I hope he would be even better this year.
Ooh! I saw the new uniforms for the Tigers they are sharp. I don't see any gray. ha! You can add me on Facebook and check them out...Ron Cooke.
