What? No discussions? I'm appalled! Some info that blows me away.... 1979 Elyria Pioneers gave up only 15 points the whole year with their 1st points given up on Week 8. They escaped Fremont on Week 6 by beating the Little Giants, 3-0. Marion Harding isn't/wasn't known for a stellar Football History, but besides Sandusky, was the only other to win a share of 4 Buckeye Conference Titles. Lorain/Lorain Sr. with their solid history, was only able to muster 1 Title, a tri-share.

Undoubtedly Lorain would have won more titles if not for Admiral King HS opening in 1961.

1956 Fremont Ross, 1958 Marion Harding, 1965 Sandusky, and 1971 Elyria were State Runner-ups in AP Voting After more research, the 1969 Pioneers were also AP Poll State runner-up. Elyria lost only 4 games in-between 1968-72. The 68, 69, and 71 teams went 10-0, and the 72 team went 9-1 with their only loss to Ross. Since Ross lost to Admiral King, Ross and Elyria were 72 co-champs.

Undoubtedly Lorain would have won more titles if not for Admiral King HS opening in 1961. I think you're on point, however, Admiral King did win at least a share of 3 Titles in the mid-80s, with of course, Southview being on the scene since 1969.

Also, something I failed to mention yesterday, AK challenged for the Buckeye in its 1st year of that tough conference. It started the year 9-0 before falling at Sandusky on Week 10. Another fact from 1962.....Ross went to Massillon, and defeated the Tigers. I believe the Tigers were not only the defending State AP Champs, but National Champs as well.

I'm curious to see yearly win-loss records from Mansfield Senior. I know it had a rich history in Football prior to the Buckeye, but struggled while in the Buckeye. Malabar10??

Malabar was in existence from '63-'89. I'm sure the 2 high school period affected the quality of football some what. But Mansfield Senior has always been a basketball school. I do remember my father telling about the year Mansfield beat Massillon just after a national publication lauded them as the best high school football team in the country.

Before there was the "old" Buckeye Conference, was there another League that some of these schools were in with the likes of Massillon and Canton McKinley?

Yes, the All-American Conference. I believe it ran from 1963-1978, and had Massillon, McKinley, Warren Harding, Steubenville, Alliance, and Niles McKinley. Those schools usually challenged for the AP Poll Title, so they created this Conference to control their own destiny, if you will.

Thompson was a multi-sport athlete at Toledo Waite and graduated in 1950. He went on to play three years of varsity football at Miami of Ohio, including one season under Woody Hayes. After graduating from Miami, Thompson became a football assistant coach at Bowling Green State University from 1958-1960. He later earned a head coaching job at Fostoria High School before moving on to coach at Lorain High School in 1965. Thompson was head coach for 16 years and compiled a record of 94-62-2 — the most wins in school history. He also coached over 20 all-Ohioans and five high school or college All-Americans, including former Ohio State and NFL player Kurt Schumacher. “Doug was the kind of person that I genuinely enjoyed playing for,” Schumacher said. “He was a teacher, not a yeller or a screamer. He also showed a lot of care and compassion for the players that were under his guidance.” Schumacher established a close bond with Thompson and his wife Peg. Doug and Peg were godparents to Schumacher’s son. “They were a great role model as a youngster — I lived next door to them my junior and senior year in high school,” Schumacher said of Doug and his wife. “He was more than a football coach, maybe a life coach is a better way to put it.” Thompson was inducted into the Lorain County Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991. Coaching at Fostoria and Lorain, Thompson won a total of 115

Old topic but a good one. I played for Marion Harding from 1984-1986, graduated in 1987, the final season for the Buckeye conference. Harding was not a football school as stated above , baseball and wrestling were more down our alley. We lacked size , but always had good skilled players and speed. The things I remember the most, Fremont was loaded in those days as,was LAK and Sandusky. Funny thing we went 3-7 in 86 , we ran LAK off the field 21-0. I couldn't believe it , still can't. It could have been worse. They destroyed us the year before. We should have beaten Sandusky that year , I fumbled a snap on a punt and they scored a few plays later oops. 10-0 final . We had the ball inside their 10 5 times and never scored. Tough conference . Seems like yesterday , been 30 years. Guys above were talking about Mansfield . Malabar was the much better team in those days , we played them last every year in a non conference game , they drilled us . Had a good tailback , Eric Payton. These days Harding plays smaller schools around Marion , it's sad , they are pathetic , not even a Division 1 school anymore . Times change.

Forgot one thing . Someone mentioned what conference was before the Buckeye conference . I believe there were several schools that eventually formed the Buckeye conference in what was called the Big 5 , The Big 6 . I think almost all the schools that were ever in the Buckeye were in that at one time or another. It may gave been called the Northern 5 or 6 also. The only schools that never joined the Buckeye that was in those conferences at one time was Tiffin Columbian and one of the Toledo schools , possibly Whitmer or Devilbiss. Before my time, I just remember reading about on a website a,few years ago.

Ah, that explains AK's title share with Sandusky in 86. Also, even if Fremont was loaded, games down at Marion were never easy. Couldn't take any game for granted

Yep, Sandusky and King tied that year. We should have beat Sandusky that year. Strange to think LAK isn't even around anymore. I remember LAK had the fastest back I ever played against , I think his name was Aaron Dunlop, he could cut on a time and was just blazing fast. My freshman year at Kent State I ran into a guy that played for LAK , he said that Dunlop was killed in a car /train wreck in 1987. Too bad . He would definitely been playing somewhere. Both of the Lorain schools had great basketball teams in the early to mid 80's . LAK definitely got their revenge for that football game that year, probably beat us by 70 points combined in 2 games that year.

Ross lost heartbreakers to King and Sandusky; especially the latter. King had a Back named Raymont Harris who played for OSU and Bears about this time as well

Raymont was a sophomore in 86 , he did play a little against us that year. At that time he couldn't sniff Dunlops cleats. Fremont did get nudged out that year, but from 1984- 86 they were definitely the most talented team in the Buckeye. More so my sophomore and junior years. Big, quick, mean and skilled. They had several guys go to Michigan, OSU, Purdue and I think one to Notre Dame. Sean McCarthy, Purdue and later Patriots punter and back up QB had a cannon. Simmons , their fullback and defensive end played noseguard at Michigan and of course Derek Isman A couple other guys went to Notre Dame and a couple other big 10 schools. They were big on the lines , huge. That was the only team in the Buckeye we never really competed with in my years at Harding, they cleaned us everytime.

I've been a Norwalk resident for 16 years and with a child on Truckers squad, but graduated from Ross, 1990. You are sure bringing a blast to my past, haha. Shawn McCarthy was National Punt-Pass-Kick champion and also holds 3rd longest punt in NFL history at 96 yards. Isaman was Coach Cooper's captain at OSU and was a boxer; beat the late Tommy Morrison, and went the distance with Tyson during 1988 Olympic trials. Dave Kovaleski went to Purdue with McCarthy, and Dan Gangwer to Louisville. More stuff to come....but, oh the memories!

Chad Hicks , defensive tackle ,about 6"1" 260 really quick for his size. The tailback , Eggbert was his name. Typical looking white guy until you put a football in his hands. Ran like a freight train going downhill, tough as nails.one guys name I can't remember which is ironic because I covered him sometimes, wide receiver about 6"4" or 6"5". Calhoun? Maybe. They loved to throw the ball up to him .

I remember kovaleski . Who was the pitcher on the baseball team , he cought when he wasn't pitching he was decent sized graduated in 87. We collided at home plate at Harding , I was ejected from the game for hitting him, didn't matter he was blocking the plate.

Funny story about Chad Hicks. He kept getting to our QB, one of my best friends to this day. He said Hicks hit him a little late on the play but I think He was just tired of his big a** . He kicked Hicks in the a** when he was getting up . We were at midfield, Hicks chased him back to the 20 . The refs ran out of penalty flags. Took the entire Fremont defense and coaching staff to stop him . Good times.

Hicks was a victim of a violent crime in Toledo about a couple years after Ross. To my understanding, Jones had also passed due to health. I do remember when Mansfield left, Harding was usually stuck with a Toledo school on Week 10. I'm thinking Rogers Rams?

When I was a younger Harding always played Toledo Scott or Devilbiss last. When I got to Harding we played Mansfield Malabar last in 85 , 86, 84 we played Columbus Mifflin last. Malabar was a really good team at that time. I think they went to the playoffs both years. It was a lot tougher to make the playoffs back then. That's to bad about Hicks. We had it tough back then , our schedule was brutal. Galion at the time was the division 2 state champs , Malabar , Mt.Vernon was tough in those days and we played one of the Columbus Catholic schools every year. St. Charles, Desales, Hartley or watterson. That was usually the easiest game on our schedule. It was brutal.
