Matta is out and now the Buckeyes will be looking for a new coach. Thought on who it will be?

Lots of speculation that Billy Donovan will be the leading candidate.

Lots of speculation that Billy Donovan will be the leading candidate. Wouldn't that be ironic? There are a ton of parallels with the hiring of Urban Meyer in football. Both are of very similar age, Urban born in 1964 & Billy in 1965. Both have lengthy and impressive resume's, mostly with the U. of Florida. Both have established marquee names in their chosen sport. Both are relentless recruiters Both are Roman Catholic and attended Catholic high schools. Both have won multiple NCAA Championships at Florida

I heard John Diebler's name in the mix.

Diebler & Jent may one day be successful coaches, but for a job of this magnitude requires a lengthy resume and a track record.

I heard John Diebler's name in the mix. LOL, you have the absolute worst sources. Diebler hasn't coached a day in his life. A low level MAC school wouldn't hire him now.

Diebler & Jent may one day be successful coaches, but for a job of this magnitude requires a lengthy resume and a track record. According to Gene Smith, Jent WILL be interviewed for the job. Don't bet against him, since several of the top candidates have already turned down the job. THAT and Smith promised the team they will have their new coach by the end of the week. Which doesn't leave time for much negotiation. Jent takes it with very little negotiation.

Lots of speculation that Billy Donovan will be the leading candidate. The word is if Donovan takes the job it will take Urban getting involved and convincing him how great it is to coach at OSU. Urban and Billy are still best friends from their days at Flordia. Will Ohio State match what the Thunder is paying him? Is Donovan tired of the recruiting aspect of college sports? That's usually why successful head coaches leave college basketball and football in favor of the NBA and NFL.

If it is Jent, they saved themselves a lot of money. If there is any designs of taking the program anywhere near the level of the football program, they will have to land a highly respected and marquee name. Don't think that can happen within a week.....unless Gene Smith has been sending out feelers and making secret communique's in advance of Matta's firing.

According to the media, their ADs and College Presidents the "highly respected and marquee" guys aren't interested at this point. If any of them were, I doubt Smith would have told the team he'd have them a coach by the end of the week. Matta wasn't a "marquee" guy when he was hired. At the time, many were not happy with the hire, like you they thought that OSU deserved a "marquee" coach. The TRUE "marquee" guys are either already at a Top 10 program or happy where they are and patiently waiting for a Top 10 job to open up. Matta built OSU into a Top 10 program, but they are no longer anywhere near Top 10 now.

The new name that's really being talked about now is Fred Hoiberg.

Now, that's a marquee name! His contract with the Bulls pays him $5 Million/year for the next 3 years. I can count the coaches on one hand that would be worth that kind of money. Paxson and some of the players aren't happy with him after just one year. Maybe he'll get fired, pocket the $15 Million and coach at Ohio State for peanuts.
Counting all of his perks, Matta makes just south of $3 million/year and has 3 years left on his contract. Based on language in the contract he is owed most of that if he gets fired.

Creighton coach McDermott being interviewed tonight. I'm 50/50 on him. I like the idea of Hoiberg better but he had a quote tonight saying he has no intentions of leaving the Bulls.

McDermott is not a big enough name to turn this around quick.

And reportedly he's taken the job. Don't think I like this hire but hope it works out.

Choosing a virtual unknown leaves a ton of questions. Of course, no opinion or reaction in this case, till we learn more about his coaching abilities, player interaction, recruiting, style and method of play.....essentially fill in the full sheet of blanks. The one question that does linger is, did Gene Smith form a search committee, or did he conduct the entire process as a one man selection committee?

I don't really like the hire, it seems like a place like Ohio state can get a bigger name. Gene Smith said one of the main reasons for letting Matta go was the recruiting battles we weren't winning, is mcdermott going to win more battles than Matta did?

I didn't understand the urgent immediacy on the hiring process. Normally, an athletic director gets the word out and gives things some time to percolate.

I was reading Rotoworld a short time ago, and damn near threw up my lunch. A source mentioned that Mike Brown is on the OSU "radar". If that is true, call Thad and tell him that you changed your mind.

ESPN radio is reporting Greg McDermott has turned down the Ohio State job and said he loves where he is at. To be rejected by a lower level coach sends the wrong message, for what should be considered one of the better coaching jobs in America.

And I've read (from a source) that Gene Smith never offered the job to McDermott...which is exactly what I'd be telling people if he turned the job down.

Like it or not, this late in the game recruiting wise the NBA is likely your best, and possibly only, resource for qualified candidates. If your a highly regarded mid major coach why would you come to OSU and fall on your sword for at least one season when you can just stay put, make another run at the tourny, and see what opens up after the season? Contrary to the belief of some of the posters here OSU is not as high profile a job as one might think.

We may think it's late but remember Matta was hired on July 7 and won 20 games his first year.
