How often is it a school has two runners doubling in the 3200 and the 1600? Let alone two that will score possibly over 30 points combined? The closest example I can think of (using only D2 knowledge) is Peninsula Woodridge in 2011. They had a very strong distance core that set a state record in the 4x8 by a roughly cumulative 15 seconds that year. Two of those 4x8 runners were in the 1600, while the other was in the 800. Another runner (who was not in that 4x8 team) ran in the 3200. However, they weren't coming in with the seeding that Shelby has in all of their individual events this year.

Just looked at Baumspage without a doubt Brown should double and win both as D2 doesn’t have many studs especially in the 3200. Heck even Logan might as well double in those fields. Lucius should fair well in the 800 also and the 4x800 should breeze to a title. Add in Schemely and Shelby should score 50 plus points what is it gonna take to win???

The possibility of winning both is there but not as easy as you think. CVCA, Warren, and Dunbar will all be in the hunt for the team trophy. Teams like CVCA and Dunbar have a chance to pick up a lot of sprint points.

Caleb Brown closes in 56.84 to win the 1600. Sam Logan finishes 3rd. Whippets back into the team lead, 4 points ahead of CVCA. Shelby got some help from Dunbar as they beat CVCA who had the best chance to challenge the Whippets in the team race. 16 points from the 800 and 3200 and the worst Shelby could do is tie for the championship.

Shelby's Blake Lucius wins the 800m in 1:53.58 ahead of Parker Brown. CVCA comes back to win the 200 so the Whippets still hold a 4 point lead with two events remaining. Shelby has two guys entered in the 3200 and CVCA has a team entered in the 4x400 relay. 7 points for the Whippets in the 3200 and they can clinch the team title.

What a Whippet Weekend Shelby is state of Ohio D2 Track & Field Champions. We've been building for the last four years to get this, through a lot of blood, sweat, tears of success and tears of failure. I've seen these guys as 9th and 10th graders run till their feet blead than go out an do it again the next day. First time a team has won every distance event at state. 1st in the 4x800,800,1600,3200 and they double placed in the 1600 and 3200. 51 points just from those 4 boys plus 6 from Uriah in the High Jump 57 points total that’s more than the Wechter teams of 03/04 4x800 was a new school record 7:45.15 Congrats to the Shelby Whippets especially Coach Z, and the four distance boys Sam Logan, Sam Swanger, Caleb Brown, Blake Lucius. State Championships and school records don't come easy and I have seen first hand how hard you have worked for it. We came up a little short on one of the three goals this year CC but indoor and outdoor track were solid. I have seen some of these boys work through sickness and injury to try to get back to the top. Would have liked to see what that 7:45 would have looked like if Logan and Swanger were 100% I know both and neither are yet. 7:39 was the goal prior to the sickness between them. Blake could have gone faster also if needed but he ran the perfect race keeping the Warren boy right on his hip were he wanted till he put it away the final 100. They all ran a great race. Same scenario for Blake in the open 800 just ran his race keeping Parker Brown from Perkins right were he wanted. I don't need to say much about Browns 1600 and 3200 he is a phenom glad he's a Whippet.

Those four boys will be the first to tell you they didn’t do it alone. If it were not for Coach Z, the parental support and the great teammates they have had over the last four years they would not have been at the level they are. This distance group has pushed one another over the years. Danny Friebel, Alex Moore, Robert Moore,Tyler Green, Corbin Osborne, Jayden Sickmiller are a few that need to be mentioned along with Sam Logan, Sam Swanger, Blake Lucius, Caleb Brown all these boys made us a distance powerhouse in the state. Trust me there is a lot that goes into chasing a championship you don’t do it in a year. Championships at the state level don’t come easy it was tough missing the CC title we had the team to do it situations just didn’t go right for us.

Even not getting the 7:39, 7:45 will be a hard time to break. How often does a school our size put a 4x800 team together with 4 boys that were all individual state qualifiers in Cross Country.
You could tell this core group of seniors along with Brown was going to be special when they were freshman.
I’ve seen some amazing things from this group such as beating Glenville’s A team in an indoor 4x400 three years ago when Brown was a freshman Logan and Swanger were just sophomores they teamed up with the lone senior Friebel. The Glenville coach went nuts and made his guys run laps after four young skinny distance kids beat them.
Or the time they beat Chaminade Julienne one of the premiere sprinting schools in the state in a 4x200 at Tiffin indoor, four distance kids aren’t supposed to do stuff like that.
The kick from a healthy Sam Logan is just an amazing thing to see.

To think all the talk in that town last couple years was about football and basketball and it was those overlooked distance athletes that brought home a state title. Good for them.

I liked the shirt this year that said ( Can You Run With The Big Dogs )
It had three meanings behind it. 1st It was not only meant as challenge to opponents. 2nd It was also a challenge to our varsity runners to run with the best teams in the state. 3rd And it was also a challenge to the underclassmen elevate their effort and run with our varsity runners.
