I watch 2 to 4 games every weekend at a college level. I see targeting calls in almost every game and I just don’t feel like they’re consistent. I don’t have a problem with trying to make the game safer, but each time a player takes a bonecruncher, they are looking to penalize the player who levied the hit. I’ve already seen more than one call this season that I completely disagreed with, and just now they called it in the MSU-Miami game and actually got the call right. However, I don’t feel the penalty fits the crime either. While “targeting” is the call, making them miss an entire game worth of a season sure seems excessive for aggressive play that is normally praised. I’m not asking for the game to become a plethora of cheap shots, but there is inherent risk in football that we all took as we played. I took some slobberknockers, and I gave some. I personally would like to see spearing back in the mix with a personal foul 15 yarder and using targeting for only those most serious actions.

Very easy not to get called for targeting. Tackle with your head up and to the side of the player being tackled. Do not tackle with your head down or at the head of the player being tackled. That's the way were we taught

If you can see video, Penn State-Auburn 12:21 of the fourth at the end zone and targeting was called and “confirmed” against #9, McClain from Auburn, just sealing against a Penn State TD… I completely disagree with the call.

Did you watch the Louisville Ole Miss game? There were FIVE targeting calls in just the 1st half. Four were definitely targeting and the 5th was waved off. On one of them, TWO guys targeted the QB as he slid. They both came flying in over the top of him right at his head. They only called targeting on the first guy that hit the QB. Another was called on a kick off against the receiving team. A blocker came flying in from the side and used only the crown of his helmet to block a guy in the ribs. That made ME wince in pain more than any targeting call I've seen. In both cases they were definitely using their helmets as a weapon.

I didn’t watch that game. I’m good with intent… if it’s a blatant use of the crown and includes raising to meet the helmet and a defenseless player, however maybe it will have to be spelled out more. In the PSU game, it was a receiver attempting to get into the end zone… he was fighting with another Auburn player, but if he can fight to the end zone, I didn’t see sealing it off as a defenseless hit. The damn thing just feels too speculative… 🤬

Far too many flags being thrown for targeting. Saw one particularly bad ruling, where an Auburn defender took on a tall, physical receiver. The receiver lowered his helmet, the defender turned his helmet/head to the side to avoid contact. The defender was flagged. It was clearly incidental contact, but the ruling was ejection.
Game officals, suddenly feel empowered with this new ruling and have taken things to the extreme. No problem when it is merited, but we must understand the laws of nature and momentum and inertia, often create unavoidable contact at times. Ejection and suspension from play till the 2nd half of their following game is too extreme, in most cases.

Rutgers versus Ohio State… 3:22 left in the third quarter and we get another BS targeting call it’s not actually targeting in my opinion. Even the announcers are pissing and moaning about it.

I missed that one. So, who was the big, bad, evil, mean targeter? Was he ejected? Bailiff, whack his pee pee! If they keep altering the game, we will barely recognize it ten years from now. They have virtually eliminated kick returns and are talking about completely eliminating this traditional part of the game of football. Kinda like doing away with the jump ball in basketball.
