I had a chance to watch SMCC play eight man football on BCSN channel 7 Saturday night. My goodness, they got shellacked by Toledo Christian. I highly respect Toby Hammond, but I think I could get a bunch of neighborhood kids together and beat them. It was like 42 to nothing in the FIRST quarter! I hate to say it, but is it time for SMCC to just drop football? I've never seen them look this bad. What I noticed most of all was that the SMCC players didn't even seem to care. Not trying to bash them, but man, it's not good over there. Hard to watch what used to be a small school powerhouse football team turn into this mess.

It is hard to believe and sad to see how far St. Mary's has fallen. I remember the many St. Mary and St. Paul games over the past years, and what a power house St. Mary was back then. I hope they can get it turned around.

It’s not getting any better from a sports standpoint, they lost all kinds of athletes in middle school to margaretta, perkins, and Sandusky. It’s a downward trend for them.

We recently had Victory Day at Huron in which those kids came over to help us put on. There are not many of them as you know. They don't have many cheerleaders, they don't have many in the band. Its a school just trying to keep its doors open. Remember back when they got turned in for wrestling recruiting? They were doing well then, since - not so much and enrollment has gone .. I don't think cutting football is an answer to anything, I don't think cutting band or cheerleading is either. You still are teaching valuable lessons using a vehicle like football cheerleading or band. Athletics at this level are more than wins and losses . Developing skills, leadership, among many other things is why schools sponsor athletics. Maybe someday enrollment comes back to SMCC and they can get back to 11 man.. For now keep plugging keep working. you're winning, just not on the scoreboard!

It just seems sad after watching what I did the other night. Hard to believe even.

Things aren't looking good for SMCC or SJCC on the sports scene. I don't think SMCC ever comes back for football. If you think about what SMCC, SJCC and Fostoria St. Wendelin once were, it's beyond sad.
On the bright side, Calvert, for as small as they are is dressing 46 kids on their roster and playing JV, freshman, etc. and having big time success in other sports. St. Paul seems to have similar numbers. It might be down to these two soon.
