Shelby boys If you guys get knocked out of your first place ranking over this two weeks stretch don’t by surprised and don’t get rattled over it. I know this team did not schedule running at these ultra fast courses that kind of skew up the rankings. The nations fastest time last year was posted by Zach Kreft at the Midwest meet but then he ran 51 seconds slower at the state meet. So just because these teams and kids get these superfast times from these meets like the Midwest Meet, Centerville's night race, or the Jerome Dublin race does not mean you can not beat them running head to head on the same course. I know there is a lot of scepticism about a couple of these courses being correct and how kids can drop as much as a minute in time on them. The only disappointing thing is that this team did not schedule at least one of these type courses, your PR’s could have been much faster also. Just remember what I said in an earlier post rankings in Sept and Oct may seem nice but what matters is results after Nov 3. So get healthy stay healthy and use it for motivation when you meet up with these teams. I know you have a few easy weeks coming up but stay focused the final stretch is coming you must train hard Just an example not to single out Jonathan Alder or their runners just an example Alder runners went Galion Invite time Jerome Dublin time Frick 16:47 15:43 Malone 16:51 16:04 Shelby runners Galion Invite (same course same day) Dublin predictions Brown 15:58 14:50’s ?? Logan 16:33 15:30’s ?? See the problem above is now you have Frick (15:43) seated ahead of Brown (15:58) when Brown ran nearly a minute faster (when on the same course) 15:58 vs 16:47 Now apply that same drop to the rest of the top five's times it really messes up rankings In reality how would the top five Shelby runners times translate at say the Dublin race. Brown 14:30-50's Logan 15:20-30's Lucius & Swanger 15:40-50's Osborne 16:10-20's ?? That would give a completely different look to the rankings. Just an interesting piece to update this. 10-6-18 at the Marion Harding Invitational. The Alder runner above Frick that went 15:43 at the Dublin race and appeared to have a faster time that Shelby’s number 1 runner was 27th at the Harding Invite Shelby had 5 runners in before Alders number 1 going 1,4,11,14,15

Both Makenna and Maddie are getting looked at by Mount Union, and many of the men for Shelby are getting looked at by the Purple Raiders as well.

BTW, "superfast" does not necessarily mean short. Some courses have hills others are flat. Some have nice easy turns, others sharp. Some have muddy, rutting narrow portions through wooded areas, some nothing but nice soft grass. None are the same. 90 degrees and humid vs 60 degrees, rain vs sunshine. Not worth fretting over. Is the Crestline coarse "superfast"?

Crestline Invite is the same course as the Galion Invite and the district meet (Amanns Park) outside of Galion
It is not one of those superfast courses just a normal course for our area. It has some sections that have long up hill grade to it not steep but long. But it is a better course than Bill Brown at Ontario.
If you look at the Alder, Shelby runner comparisons I did in a couple post back. Comparing times from Galion to Jerome Dublin. Times are nearly a minute slower at Galion so since Crestline is the same course, no it is not one of those fast courses.
I don't really know of any of those superfast type courses in our area most seam to be down towards the Columbus area Shelby did not schedule any of them that sucks.

Meet 8 10-2-18 Tue
Crestline Invite
The Shelby Boys won the 14 team race scoring 26 points runner up was Norwalk with 73
173 runners today Shelby runners went 1 Brown, 4 Logan, 6 Lucius, 7 Swanger, 8 Osborne, 15 Payne, 16 Sickmiller
Race was on time even after thunderstorms with hard rains went through just before the race. Kind of a lackluster race the boys probably needed a little more intense race with some harder competition than this to get ready for the final push. Nice to see Blake back running well.
The field included Shelby, Norwalk, Crestview, Mount Gilead, Fredericktown, Northmor, St. Peter's, Galion, Bucyrus, Cardington-Lincoln, Buckeye Central, Plymouth, Lucas, Ontario
Galion runner Braxton Tate had a nice race finishing 2nd. MOAC Galion finished 6th, Ontario finished 14th
In the girls race Shelby girls Makenna Heimlich, Maddie Heimlich went 1 and 2 in the race. But with missing a couple runners today as a team ended up 2nd behind Northmor. 37 to 77
Shelby runners went 1 Makenna Heimlich,2 Maddie Heimlich, 27 Alex Cundiff, 32 Olivia Osborne, 40 Ava Long
Appeared that not all the varsity runners ran for some of the teams.

Meet 9 10-6-18 Sat
At the Marion Harding Invitational today the Shelby boys were runner up behind Ashland by 4 points.
23 teams 211 runners
1 Ashland 41, 2 Shelby 45, 3 Olentangy 94, 4 Jonathan Alder 129, 5 Canal Winchester 186, 6 Findlay 191, 7 Newark 217, 8 Northmor, 9 Liberty-Benton, 10 Bloom-Carroll, 11 Lexington (JV), 12 Elgin, 13 Colonel Crawford, 14 Highland Marengo, 15 Buckeye Valley, 16 Mount Vernon, 17 Pleasant, 18 Upper Sandusky, 19 Centerburg, 20 Bucyrus, 21 River Valley, 22 Marion Harding, 23 Clear Fork
Shelby runners went 1 Brown, 4 Logan, 11 Lucius, 14 Osborne, 15 Swanger
The boys were very disappointed today with their runner up showing. This was their first set back of the season and ended their undefeated streak. The boys ended the regular season 157 wins to 1 loss against opponents through 9 meets. This should have been a winnable meet. The boys defeated Ashland a few weeks back. But give Ashland a ranked D1 team credit they are a very good team and ran very strong today. You have to be at your very best to beat a team like them and we just were not today. The Shelby boys without a doubt had an underperformance compared to the potential this team has. That just shows you don't win on potential you have to win on performance. I know some of the boys were not feeling well today Swanger had been coughing all week. Lucius is still not yet running at his peak. Fackler slated to run at the meet was not feeling well and did not make the trip and a couple more just not at 100% today. Congrats Ashland good luck through the D1 tourney I know the Shelby runners respect and have friendships with the members on the Ashland team and are rooting for you to do well.

10-6-18 Sat Marion Harding Invitational girls race
20 teams 182 runners Shelby's Makenna Heimlich was the race winner running 19:17 other MOAC girls in the top 25 were Emma Hawk River Valley 7th, Bailey Kreft BV 12th, Jia Radloff BV 14th, Madelyn Zindars BV 16th, Kearsten Morrison Shelby 18th, Emma Lichtenberger Pleasant 19th, Maddie Heimlich Shelby 23rd
Girls team title was won by Jonathan Alder followed by 2 Centerburg, 3 Buckeye Valley, 4 Ashland, 5 Findlay, 6 New Albany MOAC finishers Shelby Girls 8th, Marion Harding 18th,
Sometimes at a race like this I do not know who sitting out or not racing hard. One thing I heard was Maddie Davis and the Alder girls top runners held back to pace some of their teammates to try and help them improve.
The Girls MOAC race may shape up to be very competitive this year. I was told BV’s lead runner Chloe Dawson was wearing a boot at the meet today, heard she had a fracture I am assuming a stress fracture. If anyone out there knows more let us know. I really hate to see her out with an injury she is such a strong runner. If she is out or not running 100% it will definitely have an impact on the MOAC meet. Makenna Heimlich looks to be coming on strong expect her to push hard to try and win the individual title. If BV’s lead runner doesn't run or run to her potential I look for the Ontario / Buckeye Valley girls race to be much closer. I do not know about the health of any of the rest of the runners if you have updates girls or boys let us know. Hope they are all running next Saturday girls and boys.

One of the biggest dangers a good team faces isn’t that it won’t become successful, but that it did, and then cease to improve.
We must work hard every day to improve.

Shelby Boys win the MOAC placing six in the top seven spots.
The 8 team league meet race was won by Shelby scoring 18 points.
Team placings went 1 Shelby 18, 2 Buckeye Valley 91, 3 Ontario 97, 4 Galion 101, 5 Pleasant 146, 6 Marion Harding 149. 7 River Valley 155, 8 Clear Fork 199
Top seven runners in order were 1 (Shelby) Brown 15:32, 2 (S) Logan 15:41, 3 (Galion) Tate 15:50, 4 (S) Lucius, 5 (S) Swanger, 6 (S) Osborne, 7 (S) Payne
At this meet each team was allowed to run their top 10 runners. Other Shelby runners finished 11 Sickmiller, 12 Fackler, 17 Mohr, 20 Lauderbaugh Making all ten Shelby runners win league honors. The top six Brown, Logan, Lucius, Swanger, Osborne, Payne first team, Sickmiller and Fackler second team, Mohr and Laudrbaugh honorable mention.
The chilly October morning didn't seem to cool down the Whippets as they burnt up the course today. If the boys can continue to work hard and race like they did today placing a couple runners in the 15's and multiple guys in the 16's it could be an exciting next three weeks. Great job today boys keep it up. Sam Logan ran like a beast today pushing the pace. Teammate Brown had another impressive race winning with a 15:32. Lucius had a nice strong race running 16:36 along with a strong 16's performance by Swanger. Osborne and Payne were solid today making our top six finish in the top seven spots. Many PRs today. Shelby's Nate Ganzhorn won the open race. The Shelby middle school boys took home the middle school championship.
Congrats to Galion runner Braxton Tate 3rd overall 15:50 first team, nice race.

This being the second year since the NOL disbanded I still wish we were still in it. It stinks to lose all those league rivalries. But one thing it did do was give a few of these boys (Logan, Swanger, Lucius )a rare opportunity to have participated in helping a team win a league championships in three different leagues in a 4 year high school career. The titles they helped in were NOL track 2016, SBC cross country 2017, and now in cross country in the MOAC in 2018.
I know very few kids ever had the opportunity to try in three leagues but still your team has to be good enough to win. These three will be the first to give credit to a lot of help from other teammates over the last three years in winning those championships . A whole lot of track teammates in 16, Friebel, Green, and Moore were a huge part in 16-17 CC & track, and now Brown, and Osborne in 17-18. And credit to coach Z for the last four years.

Shelby boys have maintained their D2 number 1 ranking over the last six weeks holding 10 of the 12 first place ballots.
Current rankings through the top 16 teams are 1 Shelby, 2 Woodridge, 3 Bay, 4 Unioto, 5 Akron SVSM, 6 Cinn. Maderia, 7 Heath, 8 Thornville Sheridan, 9 Tippecanoe, 10 Jonathan Alder, 11 Lexington, 12 Springfield Shawnee, 13 Chardon NDCL, 14 Eaton , 15 Dayton Oakwood 16 Edison
Some very strong capable teams in this group we are going to have to stay healthy and work very hard to turn a number 1 ranking into a number 1 result come November.

DUH!! Lex is by far the best DII team. Being polite to the Ontario girls, any team that can place in the top 8 teams in the state of Ohio at the state meet are pretty good teams and should be very proud of that. Ontario girls have a shot to do that. Lex girls don't really need me talking about them on here everyone following CC already knows they are a great team. They are the best team with one of the best coaches in CC and being from this area I am hoping they do well.

OHSAA Northwest District Tournament D2 Boys race at Galion Amann Park
Shelby boys won the District title, Lexington was runner up.
From the 16 team race the top five teams advance to Regional, Advancing teams and scores were. 1 Shelby 37, 2 Lexington 59, 3 Edison 90, 4 Perkins, 5 Huron 180 The rest of the field went as follows 6 Willard 210, 7 Bellevue 225, 8 Oak Harbor 230, 9 Ontario 250, 10 Vermilion 250, 11 Galion 259, 12 Bucyrus 275, 13 Port Clinton 301, 14 Upper Sandusky 385, 15 Fostoria 402, 16 Clear Fork 420
Shelby runners went 1 Brown 15:21.8, 3 Logan 15:48.1, 7 Lucius, 11 Swanger, 15 Osborne, 20 Payne, 21 Sickmiller
I heard Caleb Brown's 15:21.8 is a new district record, but I will need to verify that. He had a great race, after chasing Lexington runner Kyle Johnston most of the race Caleb was able to take the lead down the home stretch and distance himself from Kyle who also had a fine race running 15:35.4. Sam Logan continues to race very strong running in the 15's again today. At 16:38 Lucius had a strong race. Swanger and Osborne had nice runs today. Payne in 20th claimed the final all district spot Sickmiller at 21st was just one away but with his PR time today it put all seven Shelby runners in under 17:23. Six of the seven Shelby runners were in the top 20 earning all district and would have advanced individually. Even though Caleb set a new course record today, strong winds probably slowed the field slightly overall. Shelby and Lex are both good teams and will represent this area very well at the next level. No real surprises in the teams advancing. We new Lex and Edison would be right there. Lex is a very well coached program with one of the top boys in the state and Edison has some good runners as well. Braxton Tate at 4th running 16:05 was the only other MOAC runner from this district advancing to Regional.

Yet another wet soggy race day in the state of Ohio. At Tiffin in the D2 race the Whippets boys of Shelby win the Regional Championship. This the second round of the post season battle between Shelby's Brown and Johnston of Lexington ended with the Lex runner taking round two. This will be quite a battle next week at state for the individual title with these guys going back and forth and wanting that title. Sam Logan had yet another strong showing placing 3rd running 15:51. Lucius and Swanger had great races today going 16:24 and 16:48. Osborne ran a solid 17:02 in the five spot and set the team up to finish with 32 points. Four of Shelby's top five runners would have earned a State birth on their own Brown, Logan, Lucius, and Swanger all placing in the top 12. Nice performance today by all the runners as there are some quality teams and individuals in this Region. Tate from Galion had another nice performance taking 4th 15:58 and earning a state birth congrats.
Shelby Boys this week work hard get some rest and stay healthy there is some tough competition next week at state, stay focused on the goal. Best of luck at State next weekend.

I saw that Kyle Johnston ran a 15:32 at Tiffin. What an amazing time. It was the fastest time of the day for all three divisions by almost 13 seconds.
On the girls side Lauryn Mink from Toledo N Dame runs an impressive 18:11. It was the fastest time for any girls by over 26 seconds.
