I know Dan. He’s a great guy and knows sports. Did he coach them in junior high? I ask because giving credit to a guy for a whole class during their high school career after having 1/4 of them in flag and 1/2 of them in peewee football might be a stretch.

Will is the best coach Shelby has had since Hale.
There was a couple of lame ducks in between. Shafer in particular

The fact that you even asked that question should disqualify you from the conversation. We were a VERY senior dominant team that season. Why do you think I am asking questions in this conversation? You need to stop thinking you or your class were so special that everyone knows who you WERE and just answer the question. [/quote I would expect to have to answer questions for the average area fan but not for an expert on area sports such as yourself. After all you know more about Galion sports than I do

But if you have a close connection with someone in a sport you can know specific trivia about that without being a Galionite. You are not the first to think you know everything about a towns sports just because you came from it. I now assume you must be a 1985 graduate from your answers and because Galion won a a state football championship that season you feel that makes you special and everyone should know your history. To many of us, that simply makes you a 1985 graduate when Galion won a state championship and nothing else.

On topic.
I just watched the WMFD report on Will stepping down and his final words were "if I were to coach it would have been as a Shelby Whippet next year". Does that makes sense with the reports that he had applied for the Olentangy Berlin job? Also, he again mentioned the community and parent expectations as a reason for stepping down.

When did Shelby become this extreme pressure cooker?

Will is the best coach Shelby has had since Hale. There was a couple of lame ducks in between. Shafer in particular Solis? I can't remember when his first season was. If it was 2003, then he went 3-7, 1-9, and then averaged 7 wins a season for six seasons. Will's first two seasons weren't anything to write home about either, and then he had generational talent that really makes him hard to compare to other coaches. I liked the energy he brought, but I am not football savvy enough to understand playcalling strategy nor privy to how he ran his team this season.

When did Shelby become this extreme pressure cooker? I think he’s referring to people putting ‘for sale’ signs in his yard. Moms waiting for him after games to complain about playing time. I get that some of it is part of coaching, but some of it is over the top. Time to step away and see how the next coach does

I get it dude, for a local high school sports expert such as yourself we've had soooo many state championship football teams from this area that I'm sure you just can't keep all of them straight. For you to pretend to not know who the key players from that team were just to troll me is just sad. I now ASSUME that your acting stupid like you didn't was just an act, but we all know what they say about assuming things.

You are mixed up in your rant. I never said I did not know of the state title team or a few of the players. I have seen titles won by good team and not known the entire roster. It's just not that important to me. I just asked what class was better in the area than the one that someone else claimed to be the best. I knew of Carl Johnson and that is it. And as I said I did not know if it was a strong senior class, junior class or a mix. It could have been your junior class that was really good. You could have simply said the Galion class of 1986. I don't know enough of them to say otherwise. SOOOOOOO, I asked a question. EXXCUUUUUUUUUUUUZZZZSE MEEEEEE!

I talked to someone in admin. They are very excited. I was told he is the first hire with previous head coaching experience since Kurtzman. I also hear he’s an offensive minded guy. If Amicone stays on along with help from Gurney now they’ll have both sides of the ball with solid coaching.

I will say this about Mahaney, I don't know him personally, but what he has done at Mapelton is nothing short of amazing. He took a program that had very little success and made them into a solid football team. He has been there 6 years, made the playoffs 3 of those years. Has been able to adapt is offense first as a heavy run offense, and later into a throwing team. I'm sure he will be missed greatly by the Mapelton community. Mahaney is also the son-inlaw to Lee Owens, Head football coach at Ashland University .

I don't pay a lot of attention to Fireland Conference action, generally speaking. So I just dug up this info on Mapleton.
Mahaney was the Mapleton head coach from 2013-2018, 6 seasons. We should all be able to see that he took Mapleton from a fledgling program to a pretty significant one considering where they started.
During the 2013-2018 seasons, St. Paul had its way with the Firelands, going 42-0 in conference play with an average margin victory of 37.4. However, 4 of St. Paul's 8 closest victories were at the hands of Mapleton, who *only* lost by an average of 24.2 points during that time, or basically a 2 TD closer margin per game, PAT pending. This makes Mapleton the most "successful" team against St. Paul in a given season during that six year stretch. They also had the 2nd best conference record over that six year stretch at 24-18. The Firelands isn't great by any means, but someone has to come in 2nd behind St. Paul each year.
I dig it. Hopefully this all translates to Shelby.
