Didn't we blow up the Willard Basketball thread last year talking about this?
Asking for a friend.

Complete joke.Teach the seniors how to change oil in a car or put on a spare tire and they will get 100 times more use out of that than a dumb Sr project. Ritz recently said they had a recent survey where only 20% of the people were against the project. Love to know who he polled. I've not talked to 1 person that is in favor of it. Especially those who are asked to be mentors.

Ritz recently said they had a recent survey where only 20% of the people were against the project. Love to know who he polled. I've not talked to 1 person that is in favor of it. Especially those who are asked to be mentors. I've always said that when they took industrial arts, shop, cooking and sewing out of school we would start to dumb things down. 1/2 the kids coming out of school can't boil water. This doesn't all fall on the school but why take it away? If I hear someone say they don't have the staff to teach it I may just jump off a 10 story building. Replace it with things like a senior project so a kid can stand in front of a class and talk for 10 minutes. That isn't a life skill that is someone looking for a feather in their cap for some reason. I can tell you that I was from a single parent home (majority of Willard) and I don't know what I would have done without shop and HomeEc, saved me many times knowing how to cook and fend for myself. I took public speaking in high school and it was great, can't remember ever needing it to this day. Imagine being stranded on the roadside with a flat tire? I could always get on top of my car and give a speech about how the senior project helped me with public speaking but could someone please change this tire for me. I'm not sure what poll was given or to whom but as a member of this community no one came to my door and ask my opinion. I'm sure it was done with a hand selected group of people so the data could be guided in their favor. You are starting to see the country shift in their thinking and bringing back more of these things in schools because they are sorely missed. I know you and buckeyekid are seeing the results of this and you have to be scratching your heads and wondering what has this world come to?

I had 2 sons graduate Willard and both were admitted to the WHS academic HOF. I certainly am proud of that fact. The oldest didn't have to do the project, graduated last year before implementation.Youngest son did it and it was a waste of time during basketball season. Now as a bball player the season is long and tough. You go to school in the dark and come home in the dark after practice and games. Kids choice sure but bball season to me is the toughest sport just due to length of season and such. Throw the Sr project on top and we hardly saw our son in a family setting for 6-7 weeks. His choice of project was some woodworking deal and his mentor was an 80+ year old hobby woodworker. Great guy but my son wasn't able to get to his mentors house till 7-8pm because of hoops. 80 year olds like to be in bed by 8pm not out in the shop. Results.... The 80 year old finished the entire project cause he was sick of mentoring. Ha ha Fail my son now he finishes college in May.
I came up with this idea and presented it to 2 board members a few years back. A child could be exempt from the Sr project if the had 3 extra curricular activities in their 4 years. Doesn't have to be a sport only, could be manager, statistician, band, choir, work backstage at a play. There is something available for every student not just athletes. Both board members liked the idea enough to present it at a meeting. Shot down by administration. I'm off my soapbox and not worried about it any longer. BTW good job by Donna Cok trying to get the board to reconsider their silly policy.

Question: Are the senior projects something that have to be done during the winter sports season or can they be done before or after.

Needs to go away. Seeing public speaking is the goal here. Why isn't this done in English? Book reports etc.? I hated it but only because I was shy in school. If a kid has a 4.0 on the last day of high school. You’re telling me they will not graduate if this senior project is not done and w passing grade?

Between senior projects in Willard and soccer lines on the football field in Huron there are some big problems in our communities!

It doesn't take much more than spelling your name correctly on a paper to get a "D".

But I watched my daughter struggle through it. Passed w an A. But the kid was up late. 2am in the morning late. Not because she put anything off but because of playing hoops driving to Mansfield for college credit courses. And the rest of her classes. She loves school. But she was not fond of the senior project. But I guess if we can just encourage our kids to do just enough to get by. Then we got it made. 😏

I got "passing grade" from you. As a father I would have been just as proud as you were of your daughter and her MUCH more than "passing grade".
BTW, my daughter found that she was so well prepared for college due to it being more difficult to get an "A" in high school than it was in Ohio University's School of Journalism. Where her only grade that wasn't an A in four years was a B in her Political Science specialization. I know many parents who told me that their kids told them the same about classes at Ontario.

My daughter completed her senior project last month. She put a good bit of time and effort into it over a 4 month period. She enjoyed it a great deal. She learned alot as a result. I think they are a good idea, however, I don't think they should be a requirement for graduation.
