Interesting times. Might just as well get it over with. Teams can be named after animals or plants, inert matter, weather, fictional characters, or possibly human professions. No perceived slurs of derogatory intent toward human groups are tolerable any longer at any level. Goodbye Yankees! 😏

We'll see which districts are the best at planning when seeing which ones had a plan in place for this inevitable day.

I can understand changing Redskins, but Indians? Have we gotten so sensitive that a general term as Indians, come on now! The PC police, emerged sometime in the early 70's, a group of white liberals, felt it was their unappointed duty to tell the rest of America how to speak, how to think and what is acceptable and what isn't. The sheep that we are, bought into it. I remember about 20 years ago, or so, someone did a poll among American indian tribes. With the simple, basic question; 'What do you wish to be called and referred to: 1. American Indian or 2. Native American? The vast majority wished to be called American Indians, as they had been calling themselves. Unless we've ramped up the sensitivity scale again, the name American Indian is no way insulting or offensive to our native population Both terms are appropriate and the Cleveland Indians should remain as they have been since inception.

I’ll start by saying I’m white, of the lily white variety so I have no authority to speak on this matter.
I get why Chief Wahoo could be considered offensive. He’s a caricature and not a very flattering one. On the other side the Seminole Nation endorses Florida State’s mascot because the university consults with them and makes sure he is respectfully represented. You also don’t see any white guys carrying signs outside of Notre Dame and that mascot even highlights a negative stereotype - the drunken Fighting Irishman.
I’m getting tired of hashing out the sins of previous generations. I want a dry erase board and some Windex.

Our local high schools who may have names that would be deemed offensive won't change unless the community wants it. Will cost money to rebrand and such.

Miami University used to be known as the Redskins. In the beginning it was due to their all red uniforms, then it moved to the tribe that once lived in that part of SW Ohio. The university eventually developed a relationship with the tribe now in Oklahoma. As long as the tribe was ok with it, Miami was known as the Redskins. In the mid-90's, there was a change in the leadership of the tribe. The tribe decided to not support the use of Redskins at Miami University. This is when the university changed the name to the Redhawks.

Call me a traditionalist if you will, but Miami will always be the Redskins. I have a couple friends who played football for the Redskins and have always thought of their namesake in a positive light. On the other side of the coin, understand those that wish to inject racial connotations to the nickname and wasn't surprised it was changed.

It's time for the Montreal Canadians to change their name. Real Canadians are winners and the Montreal Canadians are losers and make all Canadians look dumb. Call yourselves the Montreal French. France loves losing.

^beat me to the punch.
While we're on the subject, no Canadian NHL city has won the Stanley Cup since 1993. I bet people regret BS stick checking to McSorley nowadays, don't they? I won't disclose the story; Google is your friend.
Also, a little trivia, both Canadiens and Kings played in Arenas called The Forum.

Bucyrus City Schools recently did a survey with School residents, alumni and students on whether to change the name and mascot. According to a posting on the School website, over 1700 people responded and 79% said keep the the current name and mascot. (Redmen!) I would hope that the School Board will take the results of this survey and put the whole name change to bed. Also, I am sure that many schools with similar nicknames will take notice.

Johnny Lawrence of Cobra Kai fame (one of my favs by the way) would have said this about the name changes, "Quit being pussies..."

I was talking to an African Canadian today and he said he was offended by the term ship. Because slaves were brought over to the Americas on ships and he thinks the word is completely offensive. I agree.
Yesterday I was talking to an African Mexican and he said he said people get way to offended these days, especially the African Chinese. And not to get him started on the African Iranians.
