I happened to see a rumor that Greg Mattison may be retiring, anyone else see or hear that? I'd heard the same thing. Greg is around 71, I believe. If that's the case, it will be interesting who the next DC will be, whether it come within the current ranks or a newby from outside.

And it’s not rumor anymore, Ryan Day just announced Mattison is indeed retiring.

I trust Day to make a home run hire. There’s been some “smoke” out there that Corey Raymond, the DB coach at LSU, is possibly looking for jobs elsewhere. Not sure if that would be a possibility but a lot of people on Twitter already bringing his name up.

Raymond was offered secondary coach post at Texas two weeks ago according to reports from texas. He signed an extension at lsu last January (2020) but I dont think either have the luster of an OSU position

JT Tuimoloau, the #1 overall player on most recruiting sites, has made a silent commitment to Ohio State today according to a lot of different sites. Him and Sawyer together is huge, our DL will be a force for years to come.

The updated 247 rankings came out for 2021. This is what Ohio State currently has for the top 10...
#5 Jack Sawyer #6 Donovan Jackson #8 Emeka Egubka #10 TreVeyon Henderson
And OSU is the favorite to land #1 overall JT Tuimoloau.
Unreal the talent that Day and the coaches are stocking up.
And this doesn't include the rest that are ranked. Ohio State has 17 of their 21 signees ranked in the Top247.

Egubka is unreal. Thinking about he and Fleming and Smith-Njigba on the field together in 2022 with whomever our QB ends up being is a lot of fun.
Also, Tate Martell is transferring again. Sigh.

And then to add to those 3 you’ll also have Caleb Burton in the 2022 class who is one of the top 2 or 3 WR’s in that class. Just crazy how good they are.
And that’s not even including guys like Marvin Harrison, Jayden Ballard, and Gee Scott.

Tate has an enormous sized head, for him to play he'll have to give up his vision of playing in a Power 5 Conference.

The LSU decommit, Raesjon Davis is to make his school choice be known, Wednesday evening. Looks like it's down to OSU or USC. Up to the past week, looked like Al Washington had a good chance of getting the nation's #4 outside LB. Although Raesjon's recent visit to the OSU campus, along with his parents went extremely well, his good friend and former team mate at Mater Dei High School, just committed to the Trojans, coupled with a better chance of seeing the playing field right away for the home state school, makes USC very attractive.
I'm not feeling optimistic on our chances, but hope I'm wrong.

But not looking good.

Definitely would have been a nice addition but we do have a lot of young good ones on the roster and an awesome trio in the 2022 class in Hicks, Powers, and the one from Kansas(name escapes me right now).

Last one we’re waiting on is JT Tuimoloau who is waiting until April to make his decision. All signs point to Ohio State and there were even rumors that he’s already a silent commit but you never know in the recruiting world.

Matt Barnes, who was the special teams coordinator and assistant secondary coach, has been promoted to secondary coach. Parker Fleming, who has been a quality control coach for the past three seasons, has been promoted to fill Barnes’ spot as special teams coordinator. Kerry Coombs, who shared defensive coordination duties with Mattison, will now have that job all to himself.

are we all in on Coombs as a DC?
i am luke warm about this...

Post by Willard Fillmore on Feb 4, 2021 15:53:08 GMT -5
Since Coombs was only a half last year. I have to go along with Day's reasoning. Coombs is a DB guy, so I'd have to think playing a 4-4 against Bama came from the other half.
The real issue was losing their D-coordinator. THEN 2 corners as first round draft picks and their starting safety to the NFL. THEN 2 potential starters in February, when they were dismissed from school. THEN losing a safety and a starting corner to injuries just before and early in the season. NO other team in the country can have that happen to them, win their league title, go undefeated and play in the National Title game.
EDIT. They also lost a generational DE pass rusher to the NFL.
Count 'em, that's 9 very important pieces from the previous year's defense, not even counting their 2 defensive tackles that graduated.

I’m luke warm on Coombs as well right now, but I’d like to see how he does next year when it’s “hopefully” more normal, such as spring ball, summer workouts, and a normal preseason camp. If the defense is still poopy after next season then I’ll be concerned.

the revised 2021 Big Ten Schedule has been released. I have no problem with anything EXCEPT, granting Michigan back to back home games. I feel the game should be played in Ohio Stadium. they want the rivalries rotated annually, then do just that.

Now, I'm thoroughly confused and perturbed. Try and digest this: 2019 Ohio State played at Ann Arbor. 2020 Michigan cancels their game in Columbus. (Due to a total of 9 cases of Covid 19 in their entire athletic system.) 2021 Ohio State plays at Ann Arbor. (Due to a revised, Big Ten scheduling.) 2023 Ohio State plays at Ann Arbor. (On November 25, 2023.) How can it possibly happen, that Ohio State plays 3 CONSECUTIVE GAMES IN ANN ARBOR???
