Might as well get a thread started for next season. I was talking to someone about who some of the new starters will be next year, the biggest holes to fill will be at linebacker as we graduate Browning, Werner, Borland, and Hilliard. I would think Teradja Mitchell will finally be a starter. My guesses for the other two spots would be Dallas Gant and K'Vaughn Pope, unless a younger guy steps in like Cody Simon maybe.
Our D-line should be a monster as we really only lose Cooper. With Garrett and Togiai returning, the inside will be a force. And then on the ends we'll have Harrison, Smith, Friday, Baptiste, and the incoming freshman Jack Sawyer who is going to be our next great DE.

The player you mention that mystifies me is Harrison. He played a lot of minutes last year as a Freshman and showed the potential of being the next stud 5* D-End at Ohio State, then disappeared this year. Not sure his laid back easy going personality fits that of a fast twitch pass rusher. There are other D-Ends that passed him and with Sawyer coming in, maybe he should put pounds on and be moved to the inside. A 6-6 Tackle with long arms can knock down some passes

Let’s see what another year does for Harrison. I too at times felt like he wasn’t doing anything and we never heard his name called. Maybe with two years under his belt now he will come out strong next year. Our D-line should be our defense’s strength again next year.
And even though our secondary was pitiful this year, with most of them returning hopefully that experience will pay off.

Why am I hearing talks about Ryan Day to the Eagles?
|
|
|
Post by Willard Fillmore on Jan 13, 2021 22:06:57 GMT -5
Because the Eagles are floating rumors.
Ryan Day can go to the Eagles and in 2 years be their next head coach to be fired. He can coach at Ohio State and never get fired. At a place like Ohio State you have the best high school players in the country lining up to play for you every year. You get your pick of the 20 best every year. In the NFL, unless you're really bad, you don't get one of the best players. THEN, you don't get another one until after 31 other coaches have taken one.

It sure seems like Ohio State will be loaded at wide receiver next year too? Garrett Wilson, Jameson Williams, Julian Fleming, Gee Scott, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Emeka Egbuka to name some. Chris Olave could return for his senior season too?

Anyone heard anymore on Wade's plans? He was hesitant on leaving, but daddy is pushing.

The big rumor is Wade is returning next year to increase his dubious NFL readiness. Move him back to his safety position (some call it slot corner) still a safety.
Think there is going to be a shocker of some sort. Justin Fields returning would be the ultimate shocker, but not plausible.

Does Wade even grade out as a first round talent any more?

A slot corner's responsibilities are not close to that of a Safety. Slot corner is usually in man coverage at the line of scrimmage against the opponents slot receiver. Think KJ Hill and Garret Wilson. There was no slot corner this year in Coombs defense. Combs will have to be fired before there will ALWAYS be 3 corners on the field at the same time, like there was in Hafley's defense last year. Hafley's defense had ONE high Safety, Coombs' defense with 2 Safeties and often a LB covering the slot receiver.

No way does Fields return, he’s a top 10 pick.
I’d be surprised if Wade returns. I think his draft stock fell, but he had already declared for the draft before the season was reinstated so I doubt he comes back.
I agree about our WR group, they are going to be tough. Olave is most likely gone but even without him we have so much talent. Emeka Egbuka is going to get a lot of playing time as well I think. Garrett, Smith Njigba, Fleming, Scott, Egbuka, Williams. So much talent there.

There will only be room for one as a starter next year from that talented class. Hard to believe that all but one won't be a starter until their Junior year. Not what they expected, as I'm sure they all envisioned being drafted after 3 years.
Not to mention Kamryn Babb and Jalen Harris being in the mix, unless they transfer. THEN coming in the 2021 class is Jaden Ballard, Marvin Williams Jr and Emeka Egbuka the #1 WR in the country. That will make ELEVEN 4 and 5 Star WRs on the roster next year, which seems like a little bit of an overkill, when only at most 3 are used at any one time, when not in the 12 package. How many O-linemen do we have? There are ALWAYS 5 on the field

So much talent there. Speaking of returners. Why wouldn't every Senior that's not going to be a high draft choice return for another year under the NCAA rule granting another year of eligibility to ALL players due to THE virus? At the very least why not get another year of a free education? Not only next season, but the following 3 years there will be A LOT of 5th year Senior and 6th year Seniors counting players who Red Shirted or have had a Medical Red Shirt. This will mean the next 3 years college rosters will have 100 scholarship players on their rosters and maturing to have a bunch of 23 and 24 year old men playing college football. OR does this mean for every player taking advantage of another year of eligibility, there has to be one fewer scholarship given every year to stay at the mandated 85 scholarship limit on a team? I have not read or heard what the NCAA is going to allow. 100 player rosters would mean a HUGE advantage for programs like the Wisconsins, Iowas and Northwesters of college football. Who rarely have a player leave after 3 years

I also think Henderson will push for the starting RB spot. Teague is solid and great for goal line situations but not sure if he should be the feature back, like Elliott or Dobbins. I think Henderson is that guy, and Evan Pryor too. Those two will be studs for us. Even Miyan Williams had some flashes of how good he can be a few times this year.

This is a list of Seniors that should take advantage of the addition year. IMO won't get drafted that high, if at all. Might as well get a year of grad school for free, unless they're tired of going to class or the grind of college football.
Offense: Gunner Hoke he'd probably complete his Masters with one more year, Gavin Cupp, Jaylen Harris, Chris Booker, Demario McCall, Troy Serman another year could make him a pile of money. Jake Hauserman and Luke Ferrel I have no idea about tight ends, I do know not many make much in the NFL.
Defense: Marcus Williamson, Antwan Jackson(DT), Jonathon Cooper will he get drafted?, Tuf Borland he won't, Baron Browning has not reached his potential, Justin Hillard he could really make a name for himself with another year, those 3 would solve the LB problem for next year, Haskell Garrett I read he's seriously considering it
Special Teams: Chrisman and Haubell why not?
By my count there are only 7 seniors and sure underclass high draftees leaving for sure. Not counting non-scholarship players on the roster.
If all 17 of those players above stay for another year that puts the roster at 88 next year BEFORE the Freshman class arrives. What happens?
What I don't know. If many of those come back, a right they have, would that cause some of the younger players to transfer? A conundrum. I don't think it would be very ethical for the coaches to try to convince them to move on.
