This team will go through a lot of growing pains this year. Way too many turnovers and missed lay ups.
We are essentially learning to play with 3 new starters right now with Washington and Walker gone and now Sueing out with his injury. Sueing would have been a big help in a game like this.
If Ahrens isn’t hitting threes he’s still such a huge liability. Can’t defend and can’t create, when he does dribble he’ll take about 3 dribbles then pick it up.

How many lay ups did Johnson and Branham miss? Meechie had a nice game overall but still shows his youth with some really bad plays.

At least the experience from the grad transfers was helpful. LOL As I feared, replacing Washington's scoring is a factor for this team. Wheeler has done a nice job of replacing Walker. Having Sueing miss games will hurt but Washington's points will be difficult to replace, even as the season goes on.
Xavier had 2 players collect more offensive rebounds than OSU did as a team. Plus Xavier had 10 steals compared to 3 for OSU.

Your logic with the grad transfer thing is still flawed, can’t just have 9 or 10 bodies on a team. I guess dude would rather have walk ons. Wheeler needs to shoot more, not sure why he doesn’t. He could pick up some of those points. He seems to have a nice shot. He also has 18 assists to only 3 turnovers which is nice. I think Meechie and Branham will be the guys who can help with scoring with Sueing out. Ahrens shouldn’t even be starting, I know he’s that “threat” to make it from 3 but he’s just not there, I’d rather see Brown starting.

Walk-ons would not be costing the school scholarships to have practice bodies. Like I have said in the past, I like the idea of the transfer/grad system. I don't see great benefits so far in who we have. Ahrens is only a threat if he shoots. Im not sure why he is not doing it more than 2-3 times a game. If that is all he will shoot than bring him off the bench for 12 minutes a night. Brown has done some impressive things but then makes a bad mistake or is to weak to handle the physical play. I think once he becomes consistent and may get stronger, he will be used more. From my eyes, Meechie is a hunter for his shot. Similar to Washington but not as accurate. If Meechie can get his percentage up and his turnovers down, he will be good. Right now he is playing because we have nothing better. I really wish Russell would be able to do something.

In a game where there’s a situation where you need to go deep into the bench because of fouls or injuries, I’d much rather have Brunk or Russell or Sotos coming in than a walk on.
Meechie will be a solid player it seems, agree on your assessment. He’s much like Washington when he was younger. He will essentially be a 5 year player for OSU, doubt he leaves for NBA or anything like that. I like things Brown does too, definitely a better defender than Ahrens and has good size. Need him to be more confident on offense.

I've seen Brown up close in practice and I think he has a big upside if he ever gets everything figured out. Impressive kid with lots of potential.

And with those injuries, now imagine if we get into foul trouble in a game or there’s another injury(We already know Young’s injury history) we still have them available rather than a walk on, or no one at all. If Young were to go out right now, that leaves only Key as a true 5, and now we at least have Brunk to give us minutes.

You are admitting the same thing that I am saying, only you think it's a good thing. The grads that we have been mentioning are giving us nothing. In your words, their value is only if we have injuries and foul problems they can give minutes. I agree the loss of Washington was a shocker. but we currently have 4 grad transfers that are being view in the way you have described. The recent years of OSU basketball and football have all revolved around good recruiting, even if it is walk-ons. Don't misunderstand, I like Holtmann as the coach but his recruiting has not been outstanding. In his 5 seasons we have Kyle Young and EJ Liddell to really show for it, understanding Washington was a surprise. the class of 2014 may be arguably the last good sustained recruiting class for OSU basketball. Now with the NCAA making it so easy for grad transfers, we can add a new element.

No one expects grad transfers to be stars typically, and I actually think if it weren’t for injuries that Seth Towns could have been a starter. But you’re complaining about OSU adding them and how they bring nothing to the team. What else do you want? You used Luther Muhammad as an example that there were rumors he was unhappy during the middle of the season, so by bringing that up you think in the middle of the season the staff had time to go recruit a high school senior that hadn’t signed yet and try to add him in the chances that Muhammad leaves after the season?

No one expects grad transfers to be stars typically, I mostly disagree with that since we both know the "stars" typically advance to the pro level. But, I do not think you recruit a grad transfer to be a practice guy or foul trouble player.

I am not complaining about adding them in general. I'm commenting on WHO we have. Seth Towns has not played a good game of basketball since March of 2018 and that was against Penn University in a loss. Luther was recruited by them and then became unhappy with the coaches role he was given and YES, I think from Jan of 2020 until now we had time to fill that scholarship with a recruit that could provide more than foul or injury minutes.

Lol so the coaches in the middle of a season are supposed to start assuming that a starter will be transferring out after the season and start trying to make connections with recruits, who at that point have already signed with a school most likely and if there are some that haven’t signed they are probably not that good. You’d rather them leave spots open for a season and risk playing short handed? And Towns came down to Duke or Ohio State, so I guess Mike Krzyzewski made a mistake in trying to get him to come there too?

HAHA, You are talking about something that was in the works 22 months ago from right now. How many players have been signed, committed or transferred since that time? I'm not leaving anything open. Fill the spots with someone other than practice guys. Are you saying that Jimmy Sotos from Bucknell is the best we can do? Seth Towns himself stated Duke had interest and ESPN reportedly ran with it. CBS sports reported they could not confirm that Duke had made any scholarship offers to him.

He leaves, leaving a spot open, I doubt Holtmann is just going to do nothing and at that point everyone is signed so grad transfer is the way to go. You already have your next incoming class signed so they look to fill his open spot with the best they can get at that point. There aren’t recruits just sitting around waiting for a program to call them. Towns had his best game against Duke, I guarantee Krzyzewski remembered that. A healthy Towns is a solid pick up for this team and a possible starter. When players leave in the spring and now programs have open spots, there aren’t many players to fill those spots with that are just going to be All Americans.

All I was pointing out is that it was reported, there was no confirmation that Duke had made an official offer to Towns. If All Americans are leaving they must be going somewhere. If it is the pros I get it. If they are going to Arizona St then we should be able to find something comparable to replace him. IMO

Wow what a game. Big shot by Meechie…. Not a very good play to end it but I’ll take it. Liddell with another big game and I thought that may have been Ahrens best game overall as a Buckeye between his shot making and pretty good defense all game. Sotos played quite a few minutes and did well I thought, didn’t make any mistakes really, controlled the offense and made a couple shots.
Branham had a rough game overall, as did Key. But you’ll have that which is good that players like Ahrens and Sotos stepped up.
Their next game will be huge next week against Duke.

Also didn’t help that Kyle Young fouled out. This team really misses Sueing.
Meechie needs to settle down a bit. Other than the game winning shot last game, he has struggled a bit as well.
Ahrens had a great look at a 3 with about a minute to go, would’ve really been nice if he had knocked that down.

Turnovers were a problem for OSU and so was the disparity at the charity stripe (+10 pts). The loss of Young to fouls was big too. Sotos got flattened late in the game in front of a ref and didn't get the call. Bucks get Duke at home next week.

Sotos made some effort plays and it looks like Holtmann is trying to find ways to be able to use him. In the 6 games so far, from my recliner, Liddell, Ahrens and Young have been who we thought. Johnson has been risky. He has made some plays but if it doesn't work it's a bonehead play and for a point guard who is playing off the point to have 14 To already after playing last season, I expected more. Branham is done okay as a freshman as he adjusts to the speed and strength of the game. Defense and TO's hurt him. Key has been an improvement from last season but is still a liability on defense and needs to control the paint when he is in. I still think Brown's role is being defined as he struggles to fit in at being a 6'6 Guard or a 6'6 Forward, there is difference. Wheeler has been a pleasant help as a starter with his quickness on defense and playing point. exactly what you would expect from a grad transfer. So far, Brunk and Russell have been major disappointments. Florida has a 6'11 guy that played 33mins last night and there is no way Brunk could keep up with him and cannot defend anyone smaller. Russell may, I said may, be able to shoot but it appears he cannot spell defense and we are already weak in that area so he will sit until something changes. With Sueing and Washington, both where expected to be playing right now, the Buckeyes could have been top 5 contenders. But the replacements have been very sub par IMO.

Free throws and turnovers killing us. Turnovers have been a theme all season. Meechie still struggling, gets beat a lot on defense, forces shots, bad passes. Ahrens picked a bad game to be off. Hopefully he can get it going second half.
