This weekend, Upper Sandusky HS will host the annual Gerald Swankhouse Relays, a yearly track competition named after Coach Swankhouse who had an extended run as a teacher and coach in Upper and I had the honor of not only having him as my MS football coach, but also MS phys ed teacher and HS track coach. Swank was one of those local guys who had his own athletic career before Upper having been a Golden Gloves boxer, and ultimately getting an invitation to join the Baltimore Colts after his football days at Findlay. He had his own particular way of talking to kids and his own brand of saying's called Swankism's that helped endear him to many of us as well. I just wanted to point out that his namesake is this weekend.
You can find his Obituary here which lists a little more of his accomplishments.. Swank

God, how I loved dolly football. For those of you who never got to enjoy Swank, he let us play full contact football sitting on little 12" x 12" dollies in the gym, with helmets on just in case we hit the floor hard with our head. The biggest danger was running over your fingers with those damn dollies. You could go just a fast as you could push yourself sitting on that dolly and we would consistently hit back to back. I was bigger than most, so I had a decided advantage. The dollies look similar to these, but I think they had rubber liners on the sides...
"Put your helmet on...there's woodpeckers flying around..." "You run like a telephone pole" <== Just two of my more loved Swankisms.. the telephone pole reference was to him putting me at fullback in the 8th grade after being a lineman until that year... I thought I was going to twinkletoe my way running the ball and he just wanted someone to run 4 yards and create a cloud of dust. LOL!! It was the only game I ever started in the backfield. Thank God I didn't fumble the ball... LOL!!!
