I was just sharing some of the Bratwurst Festival quirks with a coworker here in Michigan, for example the huge bratwurst grills that are made to cook in the street with nothing more than concrete bricks and the steel mesh grilling surfaces, not to mention the insane amount of smoke that they produce. Add to that the three day shutdown of the downtown of Bucyrus and the rerouting of all of the traffic... The square dancers in the streets (my parents were two of them,) and the music stages... even the festival royalty. As a kid growing up in the area, it was a fall rite of passage just prior to football season kicking off (it used to start a few weeks later than it does now...) and I never missed "The Brat.." I've even made a point to bring home friends just to visit the beer gardens and get brats there as well. Last but not least, Carle's Bratwurst... I have only found one other bratwurst producer that is even close to the taste of Carle's and I wouldn't be surprised if that establishment had someone who might have worked for Carle's at one time. The Brat will always be special to me in my youth...
I was just wondering about some of the other area festivals that reside in your hearts and why they hold that spot...

Just had a Carle's hot link yesterday for lunch. I like them best smoked rather than grilled. Yellow mustard, kraut and onion. BTW Carle's sweet Italian sausage are really good too. Actually I like those a little better than the brat links.

I don't care what they say in Wisconsin, I've never had a better brat that Carli's. There's a place to get them In Galion, their name escapes me, but when ever passing through Bucyrus I stop at Carli's and buy a dozen.
The best time I had at the Bratwurst Festival was quite a while ago. Scheduling talent for festivals and fairs is done a significant time in advance. I was shocked who were the featured performers one year. They were THE group at that time, were signed to perform at the Bratwurst Festival before they hit it big. Their management tried to get out of their contract to make a much bigger pay day elsewhere. They couldn't, so they came to Bucyrus and put on one HECK of show, a HUGE crowd watching and "jumping".....The Pointer Sisters.
Then there's The Bellville Worlds Fair.

Phil’s Deli in Galion carries Carle’s Bratwurst.

It used to be a strict rule that only Bucyrus bratwurst could be served at the festival. This rule has been relaxed as Carle’s is the only Bucyrus bratwurst maker. I think Links also have their bratwurst there now.

I grew up at the county line of Crawford and Wyandot. The only brats I found that are close to Carle's were bought at the Sycamore H&G IGA. They also make Bratwurst patties that are awesome. When I am home and can't make it to Carle's, the H&G brats are a really close facsimile...just in case any of you have the need.
