Spring sports are over and it's almost July. My thoughts are starting to turn to Football! What are everyone's thoughts and maybe some early projections on the upcoming season? Who will contend for the championship? I know that the top two teams from last year (Carey & CC) have some big holes to fill. Who else lost some key players? What key players does everyone have coming back? There will be two new coaches (CC & Wynford) in the league. How will it impact those teams? Who has been effected by the new enrollment numbers? Who has a shot at making the playoffs? Lot's of questions to be answered this season. Enjoy!

Guess I'll start off with Colonel Crawford.
CC loses 4 All-Ohio players, 1 each at RB, LB, OL, and DB. They return one (Parker Ketterman) at DL who was also 1st team All-N10 on the offensive and defensive lines. Gabe Thew, 1st team N10 LB returns along with their QB, Kam Lohr, who was 5th on last years league leader board. RB Mike Clinard, (2nd team N10, 685 yds., 12 TD's) returns along with 4 out of 5 interior O linemen. CC's run game should be solid again, despite losing their 1st team All-Ohio RB. The kicking game should be good with Braxton Morton (70/72 XP and 5 FG).
CC's new HC, Ted Bruner, has been an assistant at CC since 2013 and the OC the last 4 years. Previously he was a HC for Bucyrus and went 42-28 there. I don't think the average fan will see that many changes in CC from what they have been seeing the last few years.
I definitely think they will contend for an N10 title. With 16 teams now making the playoffs, anything less than a first round home game in region 22 will be disappointing IMO.

Media interview by SwankonSports with Carey HC Jon Mersman:
Carey is the defending division VI state champion and this year they are working hard to attain that same level of success. The Blue Devils will be a more inexperienced team this season, no question, but coach Jonathon Mershman believes they are bringing some momentum for last year as they begin preseason camp. “I do think we have some momentum going in, but it is a different year and different players. We lost 15 seniors from last year and all contributed to that state championship run,” he told Swankonsports.com on Tuesday evening, “We do have some pieces back that played last year. So, that carries a little bit of momentum, but we have to get everybody back up to snuff that are replacing those 15 seniors.”
Carey will scrimmage Hardin-Northern and McComb on Friday and Elida next Friday. They open the season on August 19 at home against Hopewell-Loudon, champion of the River Division of the Sandusky Bay Conference last season. With a lot of new guys this year, Mershman says their execution has been sound, but they have to understand at the varsity level things come faster. “I think so far, we are executing plays correctly. Now, getting them up to varsity speed and varsity aggression, it’s a little bit different than playing JV’s. That is our biggest test right now in the preseason,” he said. A big key for Carey last year was their physical play. Mershman says they must continue to work to become a physical team. “We had a lot of seniors, but a lot of those seniors played as sophomores. So, they took their lumps that year they played as sophomores. We went 5-5 in the regular season, but we made the playoffs and made that playoff run and ended up 7-6 and those guys grew in that physicality. It might be a little bit of a battle at the beginning of the year because we have to gain that physicalness,” said Mershman.
I'm not fooled by all the coach speak. Carey has a very good program with several all league contributors back from last year. They may have some reloading to do (like most teams in the N-10), but by the end of the regular season, they will be right in the mix.

There are some good matchups in the 1st week of league play in the N10.
Mohawk at Buckeye Central - Mohawk seems to be a little down this year, and Buckeye has shown some improvement. This will be a good matchup between Mohawk's speed and athleticism vs. BC's size in the trenches. BC will have to contain big plays from the Warriors. I'll go with BC at home in a tight game if they do so. Colonel Crawford at Bucyrus - Bucyrus showed some offensive potential in their 1st game that CC will have to be wary of. The Redmen then played two pretty good teams that were able to shut them down. CC has a lot of offensive weapons, and I don't think Bucyrus will be able to contain all of them. I'll go with CC, in a possible high scoring game. Carey at Wynford - Wynford 0-3 for the first time since 1977. Wynford has played some good defense so far, and is putting in the Wing-T offense and wants to run this year, but hasn't got everything clicking yet. Carey is still Carey. They will take care of business in a workman like manner at Wynford this week.
Upper Sandusky at Seneca East - Upper is improved, but made too many mistakes to hang with Galion the entire game. If they clean that up they will make a game out of it. At 2-1, I think SE let a winnable game get away from them with Willard last week. They will be tough if they can put things together. I'll go with them at home this week.

Results 9/9/22: Mohawk 42, Buckeye Central 12 Colonel Crawford 63, Bucyrus 12 Carey 42, Wynford 0 Seneca East 41, Upper Sandusky 34 The Bucyrus teams have become punching bags for the NCC. Still don’t understand why a small town needs two separate school systems. Imagine taking a school like Clyde and saying there needs to be two schools. I already know that too much pride and egos will prevent that from ever happening.

Since CC and Wynford have better football programs, maybe the Bucyrus district should be dissolved and split up among those two schools. Of course, as you say, pride and egos, not to mention state law and taxpayers wishes, will probably prevent that from ever happening for a sports related reason.

I was in favor of a Crawford Countywide School System that was proposed about 20 years ago. Would’ve dissolved all 6 school districts and created 1 district with 2 highs schools probably 1 in Bucyrus and 1 in Galion. I don’t see any consolidation of school districts in Crawford County for the foreseeable future now that every district is in new or newly renovated school buildings.

I don’t see any consolidation of school districts in Crawford County for the foreseeable future now that every district is in new or newly renovated school buildings. I can only vaguely remember that, so I can't speak as to why it failed, but it should tell you something about the wishes and priorities of the residents in those districts. I hope the day never comes in which those kinds of decisions are driven mainly by sports related reasons.

N10 matchups Friday. 9/16/22: Colonel Crawford at Seneca East- This will be CC's stiffest test so far. They like to grab an early lead, wear the opponent down, and then let the clock run. This will be difficult for them this week. SE is big and athletic. In two of their three wins, they were down early and then came back to win in the 4th quarter. CC will need to play a complete game this week. Field position and turnovers will win or lose this game. I'll go with CC in a close game in suburban Attica. Bucyrus at Upper Sandusky - Battle between two teams with QB's that can sling it. The outcome will depend on who's hot, and who's not. In a high scoring game, I give Upper the edge at home. Mohawk at Wynford - When's the last time Wynford was 0-4? Even though Mohawk always plays Wynford tough, I think this is the week the Royals get some things going and get their first win of the year. Buckeye Central at Carey - Sorry BC fans, this is just a dress rehearsal game for Carey's showdown with CC the following week.
