A lot of people don’t know that Randy Ayers tried to get Orlando to play basketball while at Ohio State as well. Obviously he didn’t and made the right career path. Anybody who saw Pace play basketball knows that he could have contributed to a D-I program. Would he have been a NBA type big? Nope. HOF football player? Yep. He made the right choice. Just like LeBron was the number 1 football player in Ohio his junior year. Could’ve he went and played college football? Yes, but like with Pace, he made the right choice.

Sandusky having a back to the basketball post player would have not benefited them. They were built on speed, chaos and layups. They did not want to play half court basketball, they wanted to get as many shots off as they could.

AND he was an NFL great at offensive tackle, not a college basketball player. A lot of people don’t know that Randy Ayers tried to get Orlando to play basketball while at Ohio State as well. Obviously he didn’t and made the right career path. I'm sure he could have "played"....also we're talking Randy Ayers

VERY easy choice for both of them. Before Pace there was Scott May. I'm not sure he made the right choice. When I was a teenager who ran track, I saw him at the Mansfield Relays. Without a doubt he could have been the best decathlete in history winning multiple world and olympic titles.

It would have been interesting to see whether he could have learned the pole vault. His height would have been a positive but he would have needed a Pacer the thickness of a telephoe pole. Something tells me that he would have picked up the javelin pretty easily.

He did Pole Vault, something like 13-6 with little or no practice. At the Mansfield Relays, when he was a Senior, he won the Long Jump, Low Hurdles, and placed in the High Jump and Discus. Winning and placing in those specific 4 events in a single major high school meet is unheard of. Your right, doing well in the Pole Vault is a huge point getter in the Decathilon, as it's the most difficult event skill wise
This was when the Mansfield Relays had over 300 of the best teams from not only Ohio but New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia and Canada. Even teams from Illinois once in awhile

I heard May was a heckuva Football player as well
I've said this before; early 70s Buckeye Confernce had a graduating Class with Rob Lytle, Bob Brudzinski, Les Miles, and Scott May. Mind boggling

As a WR, I wouldn't want to be the DB that had to take him on, in coverage or tackling with a head of steam.
