Here's a general thread for pro golf talk
Yesterday word #1 Jason Day capped off an impressive wire to wire win at the Players Championship, his 3rd win of the year. It's been quite a run for the Australian-Ohioan, who dating back to last summer has won 7 out of 17 tournaments he's played in, including a major, 2 FedEx Cup events, a WGC event, and now the "fifth" major. I'd love to see him pick up another major or two this summer.

Great to see Dustin Johnson overcome past struggles, plus a little USGA BS, and hoist the U.S. Open Trophy. That was quite a dart he throw up there on 18 to put a big exclamation point on it.

Sergio Garcia finally has his first major, and it's a Green Jacket.
Really neat that this happened on what would have been Seve Ballesteros' 60th birthday.

Masters 4th place finisher Matt Kuchar now has a young fan for life. After sinking a hole-in-one on the 16th hole Sunday at Augusta, Kuchar strolled onto the green, reached into the cup and retrieved his ball, promptly autographed it, blew on it and handed it to a beaming 8 year-old Bradenton, Florida boy in the green-side gallery.
Masters Champion Sergio Garcia, was an aspiring young golfer in 1997, enrolled at The David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton (now called IMG Academy), won his first major tournament of his ascending career, winning the 'David Leadbetter International Golf Academy International' junior tournament at the Arnold Palmer-designed Legacy Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch. Many PGA greats are the product of IMG Academy and many return in their off season to hone up on their fundamentals.
Urban Meyer, his coaching staff and other Ohio State notables, such as Archie Griffin will be making their annual trek to golf in the annual celebrity tournament at the Legacy Golf Club this coming month.

Spieth wins the Open, and now we have 3 different active players who are one leg shy of completing a career grand slam.
The list of players with a (modern) career grand slam is very short: Nicklaus, Woods, Hogan, Player, Sarazen
....so it's kind of amazing that it is actually possible for that list to jump from 5 to 8 over the course of the next 3 major tournaments (however unlikely that is to happen)

Spieth can do it at the 2017 PGA, McIlroy can do it at the 2018 Masters, Mickelson can do it at the 2018 US Open.

Yesterday it was announced that the PGA Championship will be moving to May starting in 2019, with The Players Championship being moved back to March. This is partially to avoid future conflicts with the Olympics and partially to make it possible to move the FedEx Cup Playoff events into August to avoid competing directly with the NFL (something that hasn't been announced yet, but definitely hinted at.) It will also open up opportunities for courses in the Sunbelt states to host the PGA.
Having the PGA become the 2nd major of the year instead of being "glory's last shot" will take some getting used to, though overall I like the idea of having the 4 majors in consecutive months, with the unofficial "5th major" preceding them.

What an awesome Masters Par 3 today!
Tom Watson wins the tournament at -6, Jack Nicklaus finishes tied for 3rd at -4, Gary Player finishes -2
....and Jack Nicklaus' 15 year old grandson Gary Nicklaus Jr. hits a hole in one on the 9th hole

I've never equated athletic success to who's in the Oval Office. That might explain Showtime Lakers' success during the 80s with local boy Ronald Reagan in office. ;p

Seeing the Masters in November and with no patrons has been an interesting experience, as well as the seeing them deal with the logistical challenges of limited daylight and different course conditions. Tomorrow will be a much earlier start than normal, so that CBS can cover both the Masters and the 4pm slot of NFL games.
I'd love to see DJ finish it off tomorrow.

The World Golf Championship is being conducted in my neighborhood of Lakewood Ranch in Bradenton, Florida. The Concessions Golf Club golf course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and one of the more challenging courses on this years tour. We are having simply, stunning weather all weekend, in the low 80's and cloudless skys. My wife and I, had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory in University Towne Center Thursday evening, with Art Cole and our niece. Art is the Chief engineer for NBC golf division. His home (when he's not out on tour) is Rossford, Ohio. Art grew up within blocks of Michigan stadium in Ann Arbor. Art has 7 Emmy Awards sitting in his showcase at home, for his accomplishments with ESPN, CBS and now NBC. Rumors are, this event may be making a return next season and Concession Golf Club officials have made a strong impression with PGA.
Art's next stop is Orlando, followed by Jacksonville, down to West Palm Beach and out to Austin, Texas.

I have a cousin/business partner and buckeyekid's uncle whose son in law is providing armed security for Bubba Watson there. He's a great guy,met him several times, that works for the local sheriff dept with a canine.Seems all the golfers have armed security detail with them between the ropes at most tournaments. I never knew that and he was instructed how to stay out of the camera's view but he's right there walking with Bubba. Walked the practice round with Koepka. Had his choice between Rory,DJ and Bubba.Lives about 2 miles from the course and said it's been a fun experience. He updates his FIL regularly with pics and such. Roughly a 5 mile 18 hole walk. I found it interesting so I passed it on.
RonBurgandy's BIL too. I forgot.
