Fresno State is picking wrestling back up and as great as that sounds Boise State is dropping it to pick up baseball. I'm not sure what should or could be done to protect D1 college wrestling but I think the NCAA has moved in the wrong direction. In 2011 they stopped D2 or D3 schools from being able to take a men's program and along with a woman's program that is considered a non revenue sport from moving up as a D1 sport. Much like Edinboro and Clarion and a few others that are grandfathered in. Also discontinued back in 1989 the finalists in D2 could compete in D1 the following week. This resulted in double all Americans and even a dual national champ at heavy weight. Not sure what the best answer is but the field needs to be bigger to give the national tournament more prestige and the NCAA has done the opposite.

You have to have interest in the sport, which obviously outside or the mid-Atlantic and Midwest there isn't much.

Actually numbers for High School wrestling participation nationally is growing. ESPN ratings are always increasing and their coverage of the national tournament has expanded tremendously since their beginnings. As far as revenue, Mens wrestling nationals is 4th for the NCAA behind Mens Baskets final 4, Mens college world series and regionals, and Mens Frozen 4 in Hockey. Football being a money maker for schools rather than the ncaa would be a clear cut number 1.
I don't think it is an interest problem as far as the numbers indicate. One example is about a year or so ago Cleveland State was dropping wrestling. They hire a new A.D. who was a great supporter of Lacrosse and his first action was to try an add the sport along with another female sport to comply with title nine. In order to do so they have to increase tuition and when brought to a vote by student body they voted No. (I believe this was around 30 bucks a quarter per student) So what does the A.D. do? Drops wrestling to pick up his beloved sport. There is a rally to save wrestling and now it is brought to a vote again to the student body....How did they vote this time, this time to "save" wrestling at their school? They voted yes! This wasn't a question of interest but A.D. forcing his beloved sport over wrestling that he was able to swing some support I'm sure to pull it off. I just think ncaa had some things in the past to help D1 wrestling and they did away with it. 1984 D1 had 146 programs and now I believe it is 74 programs and a lot of them are programs that came up from D2. Maybe communities should have more input on state schools where they get state funding to help better serve their local community. Then Cleveland State Wrestling would be a lot safer from a new A.D. hire.
