Mansfield News Journal's preview for Shelby indicates that a lot of kids went out for the team this year that were on the fence/hadn't played for a few seasons. Whether or not everyone is a value-add remains to be seen, but any roster with eight seniors on it is probably going to have a certain quality to it that is uncommon and sought after. The last Shelby team I can reliably say had that many seniors was the 07-08 team. I think they had 10 seniors? 11? That Whippet team lost to Lex in OT in the District Finals after beating a 21-1 Fostoria in the District Semis. I think there are some kids who could play a role and be a part of something bigger than themselves if they can swallow their ego and realize they aren’t going to be the star of the team. I think I may have to take the blame for that loss. I didn’t stitch one of the key starters head up fast enough to get him back on the court. Is that the game you’re referring to?

I am referencing that game. I remember Andy Knapp diving for his life into the corner late in the game (maybe hit some chairs?). I was under the impression that it was some gash on his brow that wasn't going to stop bleeding with any sort of quick fix. That was the basic story that trickled down into our household from my brother and his friends. The easy conspiracy was that you botched Shelby's chances, but I do recall watching the game on WMFD replay and there being a scene with whether or not Knapp was going to be glued/stitched up quick enough to get back in the game. I think most recognized in hindsight that a facial contusion of sorts being less easily remedied than a scuffed knee or elbow.

I believe the 07-08 Shelby team had 8, maybe 9 seniors and they lost to Lexington in regulation 58-55 in District Finals. I looked it up, it was regulation. Something about that game made me think it was OT given how tight it was. My brother was a senior that year, so there was a lot of angry classmates at our house over the following weeks to ruminate over Lexington ruining everything. Easy to mix up the details I suppose. It was a very deep senior team though. Five senior starters. Ingle was a freshman who got minutes (and wound up with 1300ish points in his career), and there was a junior sitting on the bench that I can remember. It was a fun team filled with bulldog types. A lot of D2/D3 talent in mostly other sports. I was on the freshman team at the time, and when we had the rare overlap in practices with JV/Varsity it felt like they were monsters. I vividly remember Andy Knapp, a state XC runner who went on to Akron, showing up to practice a week or so after the official start of practices due to the state XC meet. He was almost lapping guys in the suicides that were ran and was jawing to the rest of the team while he was running them. It seemed rare to have a XC runner taking on an alpha persona on a team that had 3-4 guys going on to play college football after going 9-3 during the football season.

Lex did go on an beat Vermillion 65-62 in the regional semi finals before falling to Toledo Libbey and Mr. Basketball William Beauford 65-51 in the regional finals. Shelby had a very good team that year.

A timeout wasn’t enough time to get it stitched closed. Lord knows I tried.

Crestview beat Ontario 105 - 93. No much defense tonight. Didn't Crestview have a road game on Friday with Ontario being off. This is a memory for the Ontario coach knowing in his very first game ever, he gave up 105 points and then has to play River Valley next.

Crestview was at home Friday night beating Mansfield Christian 80-66. I thought I heard they played. So they had back to back games and Ontario was off resting on Friday but Crestview still had enough legs to put up 105 points. Crestview must be very well conditioned.

I saw a Jake Furr photo on Twitter. Crestview had players with 39, 21, 20, and 20 points.
Don't recall a high scoring game like that since those first years after Jon Diebler graduated from Upper. There was some Upper/Marion Harding game that was 120 somethin to 120 somethin after an OT.

Tonight the Tigers open up their season and begins its quest for a MOAC title. We will take care of Clear Fork with ease and then pull off the upset on Saturday against Shelby. We have talent up and down the roster and will take care of business all season long.

Harding led Shelby 21-13 at halftime. Tied at 25 to start fourth. These are two good teams. What was the reason the score was so low. Not a normal Shelby output. There were a lot of bodies hitting the floor tonight. Harding went at Bruskotter pretty hard and there was some visible frustration by both teams due to the lack of shots going in. A pretty good case of the refs letting the kids play. Nothing egregious by my judgement, just a lot of physical D and missed shots. Lantz had two fouls early in the 1st and sat accordingly. Shelby did not have many looks from 3 in the first half. Devito airballed his one 3 attempt of the first half, which encapsulated the theme of the night when we're talking about a >40% 3pt shooter. Quite a few contested layups where the ball rolled around on the rim before falling out. At one point, Shelby had an unforced, undefended turnover on an inbound after a MH basket. A lot of nonsense like that going on. Part of me felt last year's game at MH played into things. The script was essentially the same in the first half last year and this year, where the scoring took an uncharacteristic plummet for both teams and nobody looked comfortable driving to the basket. The nice surprise was Shelby really started forcing turnovers in the 2nd half. Felt like an offensive explosion when we had 12 points in the 3rd quarter.

The optimist angle is Shelby holding Harding to 6 points in the second half and 29 overall. For all that our guys struggled with offensively, you could say they excelled defensively.
Bruskotter ended the game with a nose bent 20-30 degrees to the left, if that says anything about the intensity of play going on. Hopefully that won't turn into a mask situation going forward. I think Harding was able to throw some good defensive variety on him. The names of their players all escape me, but they could go from a 6'7 athletic minded player to 1-2 others who were able to take away the dribble fairly well by staying low on him at the three point line. They definitely took advantage of Lantz being out of the game for a lot of the first half. Lantz had a big role in getting the offensive momentum going once he was on the court again.

Well since Burskotter is hurt I can definitely see Galion running away with it tomorrow. Galion will be the most improve team and what I saw last night no one can stop 2 or 12. Galion dominated the entire game last night and will do it every night this year. I will even going as far saying that they will beat Lexington this year
