I remember Coach Nasonti making a point of turning this Series around, and did he ever. Shelby was up 11 games, but Bellevue has gone 23-8 under Nasonti
I look for another great, hard-hitting game

The Bellevue game is fun in recent years because it is the scant real chance Shelby has of playing a tough team. It's also a nice touch of that Richland vs. Sandusky Bay action that we don't get much of.
Clear Fork runs out good teams, but we all understand a 7-5 Bellevue team means way more than a 10-2 Clear Fork based on strength of schedule. In recent years, both Shelby and CF get a boosted 2 wins by playing Madison and Lex. That and Shelby/CF get to mow down most MOAC schools without much of a worry besides winning by more than 20. I think Shelby last year gets a bit of an excuse via having a freshman QB. Even Brennan Armstrong led a 2-8 Shelby team as a freshman QB (also that infamous 82-81 loss against Tiffin). We are still INT prone with DeVito, but there is a noticeable improvement in ability going on. Shelby looks faster as a whole vs 2022.
Mahaney has not been the coach of a Shelby team that has beat Bellevue yet. 0-2. He has a close loss on the road (came down to a redzone INT in the goal area in 2021). As far as SBC teams go, Shelby is 1-2 against Clyde with him at the helm. That includes a 21-7 halftime lead on the state champs in the 2019 playoffs...it ended 35-21. The 2021 season saw a heartbreaker 2OT loss to Clyde, at Clyde. I took a two mile walk after that one. Woof, anyone who watched it saw we had the horses to win.
Ramsey is a distraction at WR. If you go single man with him, he'll win so long as DeVito doesn't get greedy. Mahaney gets playful with onside kicks and the luxury of having a mobile QB. Expect Shelby to do some shenanigans. The rest of our receiving core is reliable. During basketball season, we saw how well Lantz can sky through anyone in the area. Saw a few alley-oops with DeVito and Lantz last season. DeVito definitely grew as an athlete during hoops and has maintained that progress during football thus far in 2023.
I think Shelby is tipping towards a loss in the neighborhood of two TDs, but I'll say Shelby wins a good, close game. It's where my heart is.

The current Shelby players don’t remember what it was like playing Bellevue in the NOL. It’s not a finesse game. It’s a smash mouth slug fest. Until they realize that they are going to struggle against Bellevue because the only team they play that has that mentality is Clear Fork. They have the talent to win. Are they willing to fight it out in the trenches? And I don’t mean dirty football. I’ve seen Shelby do some dumb things getting chippy. I just mean clean hard football. If they are willing to do that they can win easily.

Bellevue wins by 3 scores, Shelby's defense just wont be able to keep up with Nasonti's offense. Martin and Lapata will have big nights for the Redmen.

Blowout win for Bellevue. Shelby not physical and the qb,, if not sacked five or six times, will throw several interceptions. Fan is right, few Shelby players or their parents even remember the slugfests in "the old days" between these two schools. Bellevue;s qb is much more mature and poised plus Redmen will bully Shelby in the trenches IMO

I'm not fully buying that Shelby parents/kids aren't aware of the historical relevance here.
They didn't play in 2019 and 2020. Any junior on Shelby will have seen Bellevue on the schedule for the duration of their HS years. The quality of play is likely a little underwhelming compared to historical aspects, but it's still the team to beat most years. There aren't many teams in the area since 2016 that Shelby has a losing record towards. Here is the list.
Sandusky 0-1 Big Walnut 0-1 Lima CC 0-1 Highland 0-1 (bleh) Steubenville 0-2 West Holmes 0-2 Clyde 1-2
For overall losses to a team during that stretch (and especially recently), it's only Bellevue, who we are 3-3 against.

My point is it’s never been the game on Shelby’s schedule that means a conference championship during these kids’ memories. It’s been an out of conference game that if they lose doesn’t ruin their chances of a conference championship or knock them out of the playoffs. The last time it did was the dark years that pain me to even mention. If they remember those times they remember Shelby not having a chance. Shelby’s head coach can’t really appreciate the rivalry, but Nasonti sure does and I’m sure gets them ready like it’s the old rivalry. I just don’t get the feel the current Whippets have the necessary perspective.

Wondering if anyone has even seen these two teams play with all these predictions. Bellevue's trenches aren't like years past and if Shelby has any size that could be the difference. I haven't seen Shelby but if they take care of the ball this game is a TD either way.

I think the kids know beating Bellevue equals a good year, but it would fall short of those personal flames as you depict.

I haven't seen Shelby but if they take care of the ball this game is a TD either way. DeVito threw 13 or 14 INTs last year and is keeping them "down" thus far with one per game. Taking care of the ball is not an A+ facet for us... but we are good at the onside kick.

And Shelby can score in a hurry. Second and long, third and long are not good positions for most high school teams to be in. They are not a huge problem for a team that gets 10+ yard plays regularly.

Something I meant to mention last week, it's kinda cool seeing that Bellevue has flags up for all 10 members of the Bay and Lake divisions. I guess it makes sense, since we have 10 of those little flag poles and already had the 5 flags for the current Lake schools.

Shelby is bang or bust on offense. Our running game is as toast as our running defense. The penalties on Shelby were fair and annoying to see happen. Had two of them on about 4th and 1 during offense, and we gave a Bellevue a great facemask when they were in trouble that Bellevue eventually turned into a TD.
I did say Shelby was worth an INT and an onside kick per game. The quota was filled.
It was a top notch game though. No one left without getting their $7 ticket money's worth.
With Clear Fork losing to Lex tonight (Shelby won 50-19 over them), Shelby ought to give Bellevue a healthy amount of playoff points to secure a home game. I see 8-2 or 9-1 for Shelby, so long as we can handle Highland and their RB.
A great game, but lordy it's hard to lose @ Bellevue 45-40 and 35-33 in consecutive road trips. Very frustrating.

Hell of a time for proboards to go down for nearly 3 hours...
But anyway, wow what a game. It's not very often Bellevue is on the winning side of a game decided by extra points.

It really was decided by that. Shelby looked bad in most of those PAT situations.
I watch these Shelby games over the past year and see a team that will rip you on offense every 6-7 plays if things are firing. It's hard to blame Bellevue on defense when you have Ramsey or DeVito making a heroic play here and there. Hard to beat that combo (including Lantz) when it functions. The problem for Shelby is when Bellevue churns offense like Jason chasing you in the woods. Panic as you want, but Bellevue advances. 2021 was a similar story. Shelby would get a huge flashy play and let Bellevue crank out pretty ordinary gains over and over.
I did not get to see the 2022 game so I'm only looking at the final score for that year.

Here's a recap of the game flow since the forum was down:
4 straight TDs to open the game: Bellevue 7-0, 7-7, Bellevue 13-7 (Kick off return to the 4, quick TD, PAT wide left), Shelby 14-13.
Then Shelby recovered an onside kick but did not score that possession. Things then went stale for a while before Bellevue took a 21-14 lead late in the 2nd quarter. Shelby's ensuing drive ended with an int and Bellevue got to about Shelby's 40 or so before time ran out on the half, 21-14.
Shelby opened the 3rd with a quick scoring drive but the pat was blocked, 21-20. Bellevue answered with a nice scoring drive and added a 2 point conversion to make it a 2 score game, 29-20. Bellevue got the ball back and had a decent drive going into Shelby territory but a dropped snap on a 3rd down lead to a long loss and a punt.
Shelby's ensuing drive ended early in the 4th quarter on a 4th down TD pass to cut it to 29-27. Bellevue answered with a score but failed on the 2 point conversion, 35-27.
On the first play from scrimmage Shelby threw a 65 yard TD pass to a wide open receiver, a flag was thrown in Shelby's backfield before the ball had gone airborne, but after about 3 minutes of talking the officials waved it off and the TD stood. The ensuing 2 point conversion pass was a bit too high, 35-33.
Bellevue then went on a nice drive of all runs to get down inside the 15. A first down stuff at the line ended the momentum and Bellevue ended up turning the ball over on downs inside the 5 with 2 minutes left. The Bellevue defense did well getting pressure (there were a couple near safeties), and Shelby ultimately went 4 and out, then Bellevue kneeled out the clock.
