And if you would be more clear, we would not have a misunderstanding. I DID read athleteS. All that's required for a plural is TWO. Due to there being a lot of talk about the TWO "freak athletes" for this coach and them being the reasons for his successes. Since there was no clarity it was natural to think you were talking about those TWO athleteS.

The years in the NCC where we were able to pad our record and break individual records didn't hurt either. The years in the NCC, how many times did Galion beat the itsy bitsy Wynford TEAM, when Galion had their "freak", "big time athlete"? We went 1-2 against Wynford. The only school in the NCC to ever beat us during that time. The NOL would not have been so kind to us. Obviously, Ontario figured that out.

A surprising result here. You guys don't seem to be getting much bang for your buck over there. I'd hate to live in the same house with such a hate monger. EIGHT dropped passes by Ontario receivers in the game. A big NU O-line wore down a smallish defense for Ontario. Ontario went ahead twice in the 4th quarter but couldn't stop the NU run game and they answered twice. When Ontario scored a TD with 6 minutes left in the 4th I knew they would lose. I've seen many years of football at Ontario that had teams that didn't know how to win close games. All else is immaterial until the culture changes. You were the one stating on the other thread about the amount of money that you are putting into your facilities and your programs. It doesn't seem to be changing the culture does it? You, like Galion, probably have 2 more winnable games on your schedule. If you can't stop the run it probably isn't even that many. It's quite possible that Ontario might end up with a worse record than it did in the NOL last year. I honestly would not have guessed that in the preseason. I keep telling people that the MOAC is no joke. True, there are no Shelby's or Sandusky's at the top of the conference, but there are no off weeks here either. No Willard's or down TC teams are coming to town to give you a breather during the season. You have to bring it every week. The CF/BV game was a perfect example of that. I can't wait until the CF/Pleasant game. Now that is going to be a war.

If CF plays disciplined, doesn't turn ball over. Could see them beating pleasant by 14+, BV looks to be better than pleasant. Depends that BV team shows up, week 1 against Hayes bv looked not so good. Since then, different story.

you can spend as much money as you want on the field, facilities, uniforms, etc but that is not what plays the game. Kids play the game. Plus give NU a little credit for the win? They are a little better than what some of you think they are. I saw a lot of improvement this week.

Mama, some will never give credit to the victor when their team loses. Just take the win and know you are the better team and better program.

Thanks dude. Not to mention our main OL/DL guy didn't play most of the game due to fighting a migraine/sinus problem. Something was going around the team this week, several were fighting allergies/illness and I watched a few throw up on the sidelines. I am not one to complain about warm weather but felt like I should have had a layer of sunscreen on for the start of the game.

Mama, some will never give credit to the victor when their team loses. Just take the win and know you are the better team and better program. Why are you such a liar? I gave credit to NU's offensive line for wearing down Ontario's defense. I gave them credit for answering every score of Ontario's in the 4th quarter with a score of their own. The NU kids wanted it more. Sorry if wet slobbering praises are required by you. BTW scooty dudette. I don't remember you giving an ounce of credit to Ontario for their win over your boys from Lex, let alone slobbering.

Spending all that money on cosmetics does not create a winning team. They should be spending some of that money on getting bigger players. Ontario used to be farm country. That farmland was turned into a huge GM stamping plant, that's no longer there. And the largest retail center between Columbus and Akron. Ontario no longer has any of those strapping farm boys and their work ethic. Millionaire's kids aren't the same.

Yes, we had Watkins and Davison. But we`ve had Nay, C.Brooks, Barnett, Fryer, a whole host of 4 year linemen and surely others that i have forgotten. Point being that most decent coaches probably could`ve taken us to the playoffs multiple times with the athletes we`ve had come through here this decade. Probably with a whole lot less delay-of-game penalties and ohsaa sanctions (any Galion fan should know what I mean by that).

Couldn't agree more, but you forgot one thing. "Talent" alone does not a good football team make. A desire not to lose. A desire to improve on God's gifts. Lifting and working on skills in the off season. Coaching and the offense to fit the talent. All are important for a successful season. I indeed know what you mean when you say OHSAA sanctions. But how did they hurt the Galion football program? I've asked this several times, without an answer. Maybe you know the answer. About the delay of game penalties. A big improvement in that area. In the past at Galion did they use a big board divided into 4 squares? On one side in the 4 squares are large capital letters A,B,C,D. On the other side in the four squares are the numbers 1,2,3,4. An assistant coach holds the board pointing to one of the letters then flips it and points to one of the numbers. This seems to have helped A LOT. No delay of game penalties against NU. Play calling techniques have evolved to handle the complexities of today's offenses. Heck when I played we ran out of 2 formations 90% of the time. And the Paul Brown messenger guard brought in the play, in out case it was a WR

And the Paul Brown messenger guard brought in the play, in out case it was a WR The, "Any Galion fan would know what I mean by that" was actually referring to the delay of game penalties, not the sanctions (my fault for how I ordered those words). I can't remember how long the sanctions term was (maybe 2 years?) but if we have had additional findings during that time, it would have hurt us. Better to play by the rules than to live dangerously. With the delay of game penalties, I know we had a system of boards as well. I don't know if that is more efficient than hand signals or not, but what I saw time after time was that the play clock is running down and our captains are looking at the sideline waiting for the call. NUMEROUS times, we were not able to get the play off or we had to waste a timeout or take a drive killing penalty. On that note, when an offense calls a timeout on a 4th and 3 for example to plan for trying to draw the defense offsides, why don't they already have the alternate offensive play called if the hard count isn't effective (and there is no benefit to a delay of game penalty)?

This might be news for you, but the majority of coaches in basketball and football try to get as close as possible to the red line without going over it. I had a surprising revelation told to me a couple of weeks ago by someone who played on an early Ontario team coached by who I thought was the most ethical coach I'd ever met. He transferred from Madison to Ontario when his father bought a large farm with the intent of building houses on it, as Ontario was growing and there weren't many houses for sale. When the head coach heard about him he called him into the coaches office and asked him about the defensive "keys" Madison used. After hearing his answers he knew he would be up to speed to play in his defense. The coach suggested there should be a place on the 200 acres where "they" and others could work on defensive keys and blitzes during the summer. Who'd have thunk it?? ALSO I have a friend who told me about the time several years after he graduated that an assistant coach asked him to go down to Clear Fork and spy on a practice before their game to try to pickup a few things they were doing to prepare for Ontario. OH MY! I could go on, but I don't want to tell stories about an active coach.
As I said, the speed of play calling at Ontario has apparently improved immensely. No time outs, play clock didn't get close to running out. Too bad they didn't figure it out when at Galion.
The "on that note" thing. It sounds like a simple concept, but it only takes one player lacking the intellect to handle two things at once to create a disaster. AND a coach knows if he has one of those guys

How in God's name did North Union beat Ontario WOOOOW!!!! North Union must have had some kids transfer in because they were HORRIBLE last few years from Varsity to middle school. Ontario had to of been playing without their QB and #11 I thought for sure Ontario would spank them and what about #36 he is a stud to

How easy it is for those of your ilk to have memory lapses. Honestly Willard the whole "winning culture" thing is overrated. People just use it as a crutch to avoid having to say that their team is lacking talent. What matters is talent and if your most talented kids are your hardest workers. In Hawkins second year in Galion we went 10-1. In my opinion, that was his best season here mainly due to the quality of opposition. Did we suddenly develop a winning culture? We were back to 5-5 the following year. I'll submit our 1985 team as well. Galion hadn't won an NOL title in football since 1978. We just simply had a once in a lifetime group of talent, something that Shelby is currently experiencing. I thought this to be a football thread. You can put down the Galion b ball programs all you want although I am unclear as to what argument you are trying to make with it. Currently there are no FOOTBALL teams in the MOAC experiencing "down" years.

They've had a few but for the most part they are just a hard working, fundamentally sound program. There's an old saying that many attribute to Lombardi. It's not the will to win but the will to prepare to win that matters. Down years can absolutely happen, just look at the OCC this season. But I still don't understand what the Galion basketball programs have to do with a MOAC football topic.

A good play caller already knows what play he is going to run next based on the result of the current one BEFORE it is run. While at Galion Hawkins waited for the result BEFORE considering his options, hence the confusion and penalties. This also makes it very difficult for an offense to find a rhythm.

AND a coach knows if he has one of those guys Actually it's more like some coaches are playing chess and others are playing checkers. A good play caller already knows what play he is going to run next based on the result of the current one BEFORE it is run. While at Galion Hawkins waited for the result BEFORE considering his options, hence the confusion and penalties. This also makes it very difficult for an offense to find a rhythm. A coach could be chess worthy. More importantly, are all eleven players on the field chess worthy?

The players aren't calling the plays just executing them.

The players aren't calling the plays just executing them. Exactly. Thank you. If all 11 are chess worthy

Wasn't discussing this with you originally. Guess you aren't chess worthy.

If CF plays disciplined, doesn't turn ball over. Could see them beating pleasant by 14+, BV looks to be better than pleasant. Depends that BV team shows up, week 1 against Hayes bv looked not so good. Since then, different story. BV Out played Hayes most of the night. Hayes scored on 2 long plays and and scored when BV fumbled at own 15 or so. BV had game won until Davies helmet came off and he had to come out for a play with 4min left at Hayes 5. Instead of calling timeout and putting him back in the game, they handed it to RB a little taller and ball never got put in his gut, hit thigh pad. BV Had all 3 TO left and didn't use one to get arguably the best back in league back in game. Heard they were up 7-0 at half last week and came out with an onside kick. Some questionable coaching may cost them a 1-2 loss season. Think Pleasant is only team left that probably will beat them.
