Updated the original list to add a trip to Defiance last week. I'll also be adding Van Wert tomorrow night. Of the newer gyms, Defiance is at the top of my list.

I am from Southern Ohio and just wanted to add a gym to this thread, I would imagine that not many people on here has ever been to Glenwood High School old Gym the Tiger Den. Glenwood is in southern Ohio in the village of New Boston it's a very small D4 school, I graduated from glenwood back in the 90's and I had 32 kids n my graduating class and 212 students from grades 7-12!!! Glenwood got a new school back in 2013 and the old school Graduated it's first class in 1919 and the gym was added couple years laster and games was played there for 88 years. It was a very small gym the backboards was attached to the walls and u shoot a layup and 99% of the time u hit the wall when landing or the matt on the wall. It also had a piece of a step n one corner of the floor and the step lead up more steps to a balcony that went the length of the gym and it was right above both benches and hung out over the court a little bit. I will attach a few links that are pictures of the old gym and new gym and also I have a newspaper article that a sports reporter wrote about being n the old gym to cover a basketball game one night and how loud it was and how much he hated being there basically lol. If the links don't work or can't be opened then if anyone would want to see the pics I have just let me know and I will send them however I can. If I can post them in this thread I will but I don't see any option to add a attachment or anything but if I can please let me know how!!! photos.app.goo.gl/QHGscZo6Qgtd8JHF7photos.app.goo.gl/m7CUhCj4bDsvAuTo8photos.app.goo.gl/t4byDTV33rFNYAPZ8photos.app.goo.gl/hUwCbzpXPyV6BoZC8photos.app.goo.gl/FfYjMVrBxuPRnDg57photos.app.goo.gl/ZUnJmQyQWMLbWMkYAphotos.app.goo.gl/AMmKzwVnh13kjDgF9photos.app.goo.gl/djerHYddj9DyS6Nm9photos.app.goo.gl/SNV7pJcieUUG3eKR7

Only two of the photos worked for me, but I was able to see that step in the corner of the floor. Talk about a matchbox environment. It must be compelling to play a zone in that old gym.

It was definitely not a gym that other teams enjoyed playing in that's for sure lol but I grew up playing there and loved it and the atmosphere inside on game night was absolutely amazing, and yes we would press and mainly played a zone 1-3-1 and we would extend the 1-3-1 to like a 3 quarters press and just fall back to a half court 1-3-1 but we picked the ball up once it crossed half court!!! I hope u can read this newspaper article I added from a sports reporter about his experience covering a game one night and he gives his honest opinion that's for sure lol he didn't enjoy covering r game that night that's for sure lol!!! drive.google.com/file/d/1ah83dhlYlbuJJs2Icj0-PVKuvOtJmGdc/view?usp=drivesdk

I've seen my fair share and some stick out. In terms of size there are some decent gyms in the Lima area which is where I now reside. Wapakoneta has an impressive gym and the Elida Fieldhouse is a legend around here. The "Grand Canyon" in Napoleon got my attention. The old Lima Senior gym was mammoth although beams could obscure your view in a few spots. The history of that gym was never lost on me, it had seen the likes of Jerry Lucas and Cris Carter of Middletown, Ben Roethlisberger, and Jimmy Jackson when Greg Simpson was a freshman. Jackson scored his 2000th point in that gym. It even housed the Ohio Mixers, a CBA team. I attended the first Mixers game and it took 3 1/2 hours to complete regulation. The roster included Marvin "Bad News" Barnes, Billy Ray Bates, and John Pinone.
As far as intimidating atmosphere I would offer "The Vatican" at Delphos St. John. Home fans were on either side of the gym with one side shouting "J-A" with the opposite side replying "Y-S." It was deafening. I don't know how an opposing team could possibly be prepared for it during a time out or down the stretch.

Everything about that strategy is great. If I am correct, Glenwood has a pretty strong basketball history, right? No doubt that court plays into it. The article verified my thoughts, but it must have been fantastic for atmosphere. My issue with these newer gyms are the noise dampeners that many have installed (the big foam, colored blocks near the ceiling like in Galion & Shelby or the slits in the wall like Norwalk). Logistically, I get it. Practicality-wise, I hate it.

I don't know how an opposing team could possibly be prepared for it during a time out or down the stretch. Almost every time I see a WBL/Lima area gym on a video, I'm very impressed with it. I made it to Elida for the Shelby regional game this year, and I only wonder what it was like when they were rolling with Dakota Mathias and Reggie McAdams. Your St. John story makes me think of how refs view such environments. I recall an SI article from 10+ years ago about how home-field advantage was theorized to have the biggest effect on referees (with enough evidence supporting it to satisfy me). Opposing players may lose focus due to noise, but they don't get boo'd for failing. I think we can all respect the human instinct to fear rejection - something a ref may be unconsciously aware of when a booming crowd in a tight gym is surrounding you. Those tweener calls get more dicey if you get caught up in the crowd.

Your observation on officials is well taken. DSJ basketball tickets were at a premium during the Arnzen era so I never attended enough games to get a feel for how the crowd might effect the referees. TBH, I'm not sure that I would have been sharp enough to take it into account.

I don't think the human eye could perceive the home-field advantage that a crowd has on a ref. One foul call and a unnecessary turnover call throughout the game and you could be looking at a 5-6 point swing. Simple, but huge all in one swoop.

I am sure it has been mentioned, but I really liked Rossford's gym when I was able to get over there this year.
I am also a fan of the Gym at Shelby's old HS (Joe Yohn(spelling) gym or something like that), had a great atmosphere! Watched many games in there.
Also, Wooster Triway has a really cool gym to see a game. the Pit is really cool

Margaretta has an excellent Gym for the Officiating, Especially if it's a controversial ending. Out the doors, down the hall, And the way we go. No large machines near by to block doors with, Like they have at Grove City Christian, Or wherever that school was.

Much easier to get the crowd noise to be overwhelming. The lighting was also more dim at Joe Yohn. The new gym is fine, but it is bright.

Updated original list with H-L old gym, mostly because I had forgot I had been in there until my son's game there over the weekend.

I still like Margaretta's gym. Sitting in their brand new bleachers on the stage, Can't see the scoreboards if your sitting on the ends. Then there's door Nazis, Access 'In' during timeouts & game stoppages only. Lotsa room on the home side. And the Popcorn is lightly to No salted. Pizza is always cold though.

Ashland University brings back a lot of good memories. I remember Upper Sandusky against Lexington when both Dieblers played for Upper. They were asking people to squeeze in and keep the aisles clear. That was crazy at how easily those gyms would be sold out as those Upper teams made their runs.

AND in alphabetical order! Not Galion old and new? Galion’s was not great for any sport imo... Well.......that's one persons opinion. As for me, I do not like Galion's new gym. It's too "cookie-cutter" blasé for my taste. I really liked the old gym much better. Two fan levels separated by a walkway that ran end to end on both the home side and the visitors side. Nice concession area, too. Back in the early to mid 1970's, it was packed for every game. There........there's another opinion; and you know what they say about " opinions", right ?

It is a lot like comparing St Johns to the Schott. One had atmosphere and character while the other has comfort, space and today's marketable features.
