Shelby really impressed me the night they played at Willard in front of sold-out and electric atmosphere

If Shelby makes it out of next weekend, their path will have been insane. Getting past the Tygers, Lex, and Shawnee will most likely gift you a date with Lutheran West. Yikes.

Shawnee has been hot since mid-January but I simply cannot see them beating Shelby, but WBL teams are a notoriously tough out. Sophomore Beckett Berkte has drawn comparisons to George Mangus but we shall see.

Whippets win going away, and didn’t bring their A game. A few take aways…Shelby has been a different team since the regular season loss to Lex. Someone seems to step up each game and most games 4-5 players in double digits. Ramsey and Lantz hit big shots in the second half…Lantz with some key buckets in the fourth after struggling in the first half. Bruskotter with another great all-around game. Homan with a big basket at the end. Hartz comes in, gets in Allen’s face, dives for a loose ball. Baker just smiles and walks away when Allen is throwing his tantrum. Lex is young and it showed. Allen yapped the entire game, he tried to get in Shelby’s head but the opposite happened. 5-13 from the line…ouch

Good luck to Shelby today! From what I can find the last MOAC boys team to go to the Final 4 was Highland. The Scots won the state championship in 1998.

Still having a hard time wrapping my head around this. As a former basketball player in Shelby, and having watched the good and bad years, this is hands down the greatest moment as a Whippet sports fan. I’ve gone to the boys state tournament for years and always wanted to experience what so many of those other small communities got to do…and now that’s us! So darn proud of these boys and their coaches. Never panicked, played unselfish ball and had each others back all day. And I don’t care what the voters say. Alex Bruskotter is Mr. Basketball in my book. Now there’s only one thing left to do…..WIN THE WHOLE FREAKIN THING!! Let’s go Whippets!

A couple of stats stick out. The free throws were very different for sure. LW loves to shoot the 3. Almost half of the shots they took were three pointers.

A couple of stats stick out. The free throws were very different for sure. LW loves to shoot the 3. Almost half of the shots they took were three pointers. I’ll throw a couple others out there. Top of the list besides the free throws was Shelby’s 7-9 from deep. Huge success from three after not a real good showing against Shawnee. And 14-4 on fast break points against a team that I heard someone tell me earlier in the week ”don’t run against them”. This team is special. I said it after we beat Willard that there was something about this group that made me feel like they could go on a long run. Well we’re still running and have two more to go.

Another good point in Shelby’s favor the Whippets coaching staff severely out coached Lutheran West's coaching staff. In the 3rd quarter the Longhorns went on a pretty good run and looked to be in control. But then they just stopped. They slowed the pace of and took the air out of the ball. That kinda played into Shelby’s hands then Shelby fouled like 3 times in the last 15 seconds of the quarter forcing out of bounds plays. Then the 4th quarter was all Whippets. Bruskotter also has my vote for Mr. Basketball. But Colin White had a big game last night for Ottawa-Glandorf (26 points). Both are great.

Here is an interesting fact that Martin RPI shared, in the 102 year history of the Boys OHSAA basketball State Final 4 only two have been a starter all four years.
1. LeBron James 2. Colin White
Only 10 players have played in all 4 years in a Final 4 Games.

Alex won’t win Mr. Basketball because he’s not the Ohio State commit. I’d take Bruskotter on my team over anyone in the state
