It looks like Ontario will be a contender for at least the next few years. The definition of "contender" is?

The definition of "contender" is? In all seriousness do you think Ontario will be more competitive in football than basketball for the foreseeable future?

Yes, based on the coaching staffs. The best head coach and JV basketball coaches in Ontario history are no longer coaching. The new head basketball coach had 2 of his assistants fired last year, during the season. The current head football coach is poaching soccer players, getting basketball players to come out for football and linemen types are no longer playing tuba in the good, cool to play in marching band. I don't know about other places, but there are 14 full time assistants on his staff. The administration and school board are spending money to support football. Something as silly as one of those huge blow up helmets and 4 different uniforms to an electronic scoreboard and there is talk of an indoor track being built

What is a "contender"? Can a "contender" finish 3rd? Must a "contender" contend every year? Can a QB have growing pains and the team still "contend"? Obviously both of those QBs played very well this past year.

I will allow you to take two in a row. I said the QB would have going pains. Maybe I'm wrong about pains, that has happened before. As someone has said "this is fun".

Shelby had ‘growing pains’ when DeVito was a freshman…I believe they finished the season 5-6 in 2022. Now have won two consecutive MOAC titles. I think a bad year sandwiched by good years makes a team a ‘contender’. Which is what Ontario seems to be headed towards. Not that I think Ontario will be below .500 next year, but they may not finish top two in the league.

Also that year, in 11 weeks Shelby faced 6 teams with winning records. This season, by week 11, their schedule could give them potentially 3 teams with winning records.

His freshman year he was a very undersized athlete who made a lot of youthful bad decisions. I can’t quote the stats, but I guarantee his TD/INT ratio was way less favorable.

I seem to remember him being named the starting QB after the season started. I may have a poor memory of this but thinking he was definitely in the talks but became a starter quicker than expected. I could very easily be misremembering.

The growing pain was for who will be the Sophomore QB. The team around him will be experienced. How long does the QB's pain last? Is it possible the third place team can be a contentender? Does a team have to finish first or second every year to be contender in the future? This is fun

If there's a first place tie and their records are 6-2, does that make a 5-3 third place team a "contender"? If a team goes 8-0 and two teams tied for 2nd at 6-2, would they be "contenders"? In both cases I would say yes, but what do I know? I'm not a dude

Casey Lantz was the QB in that first half. The TD/INT ratio was tough that first year. It was tough at the beginning of the sophomore year too, and then he settled into the type of player we are seeing today for the most part.

I see 247sports has moved Miller up to the #8 player in Ohio and the #12 WR in the country

I actually ran across this thread looking for a preseason basketball rankings if there was such a thing for the MOAC .. I am the father of the Ontario JV QB.... He started Freshman as well and played the 1st half of those games as it was his first year so he needed reps .. the 2028 class for Ontario is excellent 15-1 in Middle School lost to Galion the Hay twins who someone referenced earlier in this thread are Frosh they're great athletes have had the pleasure of coaching them in baseball for years...Studs
2028 went 14-0 combined this year in JV and Frosh mostly with Frosh players at the skill positions
2028 class in basketball went 37-0 in Middle School
My son along with 2 other Frosh 1 who came over from Sr High this year will play more than likely start varsity I have coached all 3 in AAU since they were 8-9 years old we've been all over the country... That being said with basketball this year just like next year for football there will be some growing pains
In his first full season as QB this year my son had 34 TDs and 3 INT
He was able to get his 1st Varsity TD last Friday vs Highland which was exciting
JV and Frosh is nothing like Varsity .. he knows it we talk about it daily.. he was able to contribute defensively on Varsity was actually tied for 5th in the league in sacks along with our freshman safety after the River Valley game but a sore knee limited his time on defense as he was essentially our only QB for JV and Freshman and our Varsity backup
I've had the privilege of coaching a lot of these boys in the 2029,2028,and 2027 classes throughout the conference there is so much talent throughout the MOAC it's going to be fun to watch.
I don't think there's any doubt next year that Shelby will be the favorite. DeVito is excellent... My son has been fortunate enough to have received D1 interest just based on his size and JV film as we will be visiting Toledo and Akron the next few weeks... He's been blessed with size he's a 6'5 200lbs pound 14yr old kid that has dunked since the 8th grade and topped out at 87mph on the mound last year... He's been fortunate enough to be invited to some of the biggest events in the state in all 3 sports...He will work his butt off.. he was 5'7 195lbs when he was 11 and I told him in about 13 months you're going to show up to football practice and they're going to put you on the OL... a few days later he started walking up and down our driveway that turned into jogging up and down the driveway which turned into a full-blown re vamp of his room into a workout facility.... He stays grounded and he knows the area is full of great talent and teams as he's had the honor to play with a lot of them over the years... I don't know what the future holds but I know he's going to work his butt off..I also know he is not BP...BP is a specimen of an athlete and he's even a better kid... Can't say enough about that young man and how he interacts with all the boys he is a great kid.. my son has a strong arm, can make plays with his feet, we have encouraged him to start to get out of bounds this year funny thing is the first two times he did it he gave himself up and got late hit lol .. made him rethink that get out of bounds thing.. anyways I hope he doesn't have growing pains next year we watch a ton of film together but just like at every level the game speeds up and that's something he will need to get used too.. right now we are very much reliant on BP and it's hard not to be... In my opinion he's the best athlete the school has ever had so it will be interesting to see how we run our offense next year..
Our current freshman and sophomore classes are full of talented skill positions and have a very good line... We also will return a lot of our current skill position guys next year... Trust me my son knows he has big shoes to fill and his first game will be at Lex vs a talented Sr class... We've already talked about it..lol... He and Brayden grew up together they talked often mostly about their basketball matchup this year lol...
From someone that has seen all these kids play multiple sports I can tell you the next few years are gonna be great and keep an eye out for all these talented young men
Shelby will be good for the next few years with DeVito then I assume Sheppard... Bowman is a stud... Great kid and great family... They are imo the hands down favorites next year... I would love to see a rematch this year in 3 weeks at Arlin Field... The 1st game was a blast to watch
Ontario will have all the pieces to be good again next year bit we will lose a huge piece in BP... I hope there isn't a big step back next year but we shall see... the following 2 years they're as talented as any team in the area.. we have all the pieces
Galion will be solid... They lack size on the lines but the Hay twins are both Frosh who got a lot of experience this year and like I said are studs and they will return soke key pieces ... I love the Hay twins they lead and kids follow
CF current sophomore class is still really talented even though they lost some kids... The twins are back healthy for them though and they are playing good football.. I'm honestly interested to see how Friday night's game will go they were out the first time Ontario played Clear Fork my cousin's son also starts as a freshman along Clear Forks D-Line.. they have some good classes back to back to back at Clear Fork their current 2029 class went 16-0
Harding has a really good athlete in Jaden Jordan that has played basketball and baseball for me he will be there future QB unfortunately he broke his collarbone this year after a few games but he is really talented in all three Sports and is going to be someone that gives defense coordinators fits
Pleasant has a good freshman class honestly they may be one of the best coached groups if you will as far as being fundamentally sound they do lack some size at skill positions and in the secondary but up front they are physical as anyone in the conference it will be interesting to see how that all gels with them in their upper class
Highland has some really good 2028 athletes I am not that familiar with their upperclassmen but that have Robbie Schmidt at QB and Hudson Howell at WR they're both 3 sport kids that make plays
RV has struggled to be in honest as far as 2028 goes and JV this year.. QB may be an issue for them going forward but they're 2029 classes talented... They have a RB named Nolan Bailey he's a good kid also excellent baseball player
Hope that was a decent rundown for some of you of what's coming in the conference... I've had the pleasure of coaching especially in baseball some of the best athletes in the state and we have some of them here locally in this 2028 class... To the boys that I've coached in baseball I've already received D1 football offers and will receive baseball ones as well as soon as they are allowed to and I'm telling you this area and conference has some boys that will make a name for themselves and I'm looking forward to watch all of them shine
Sorry for such a long post I probably won't be posting a lot but good luck to your favorite teams and go out and support the boys ... Trust me they are thrilled when they see those stands full on Friday nights... Take care everyone this was interesting to read and get some takes on the future of MOAC football
