I remember a while back you through a shot at a fellow poster relative to reading comprehension, you should take your own advice. I never made any predictions, I was optimistic about the season and thought going .500 would be a realistic goal. Obviously I was over zealous, however, I am still very optimistic about the coming years. I have not lost confidence in what the coach and his staff are doing. We will continue to improve, as will the win/loss record. My reading comprehension is just fine and you just proved it, you admit you thought a .500 season which is what I said, I said you predicted more success so where am I wrong? And I think they improve their win/loss as well. A goal is not a prediction, hence, your reading comprehension is not fine. However, I will admit, I thought they would perform somewhat better on the court overall.

What are crimson5 and moneyball’s thoughts on the season? They predicted a lot more success at the beginning of the season but have been quiet lately. Yes I was slightly off. crimson5 said it and your reply was 'I'm going to have to agree with crimson on this one' No big deal. Side note even with BB I don't think we get much more than 2-3 additional wins. The team I saw at Edison with him on the court was a mess. Let's send the seniors out as best we can this year, the HL win was a nice one & maybe win a tourney game or 2. I look forward to Flashes 2018-21 years. " I think its a fair statement, but I also agree with moneyball's statement regarding 2 years from now, willard may have a team comparable to some of the best teams in willard's history" This is what I said. You are missing the point. The idea to keep a group of kids together that have tremendous chemistry is something that is hard to do becauae you want to take a couple players you think will help you win now and move them up. The problem is they are not helping that varsity team win so why not keep the juniors on the varsity and play a majority of the freshman at freshman and possibly let a few play a few quarters of jv. splitting them all up weakened the freshman all together. Steve Smith Orville, Bob Haas Willard, Greg Nossaman Willard, Gregg Collins Lexington and Mansfield Senior, Rob Sheldon Wynford, Steve Gray Norwalk, Joe Balogh Ontario. ALL very good coaches with over 400 wins and appearances in the State Finals and State Championships. Know them all. What do you have, other than a Freshman son? They would all tell you that you are a neophyte. NONE would hold back a player, slow their development, stymie a players growth. NONE of them have ever "kept a class together for team chemistry". ALL of them have played Freshmen on varsity. If you believe your silly hypothesis then you wouldn't want any of these Freshman playing varsity next year either. Gotta keep them all together on JVs for DOUBLE the "team chemistry". Ontario has a very good Freshman class this year, Better than Willard's Freshman class. They beat Willard last year in the NOL Title game by 20. One is a starter on the Varsity averaging 10 points/game. One is a starter on the JV team averaging close to 20 PPG. Both would be hurt tremendously playing Freshman ball. ALSO, it gives 8 good players on the Freshman team a lot more minutes playing time, in more significant roles without the 2 best players in the class being held back, hurting their development. If they were playing on the Freshman team they would be undefeated. WHOOPIE!!!! Who cares, other than those of your mindset. Your "point" IS NOT worthy of consideration. Ask Bob Haas. I agree with the "meat" of WF's post.

Its a 69 step process that will require lots of sweat, blood, and tears but will be worth it in the end. It’s a tigerific(see what I did there?) plan that sets everyone for success, as evidenced by Huron. Thats what we figured you'd say, something tigerediculous (see what i did there?)

I disagree, I think you play the athletes at the level they're capable of, plain and simple. JV and Varsity ball are completely different than Freshman ball from a speed and strength standpoint, the sooner they adapt, the better. A special kid like that comes along once in a great while 😉. moving 3 kids up at once, not in agreement there. I was thinking of Pinkston, hes playing where he should in my eyes, keep the rezt of them together on the JV team

So is someone trying to argue that winning a freshman game is more important than playing the best kids at the highest level? The point i’m arguing is if you have a very strong freshman team what does it hurt to leave them all together so they can continue to play together? Once they hit the jv as sophomores they are much more mature and then you have a very successful jv team. juniors, thats the time you’ll see these kids blossom and show why it was important to keep them together as freshman and sophomores. you split all these kids up and they lose and lose they will start losing interest. I disagree, I think you play the athletes at the level they're capable of, plain and simple. JV and Varsity ball are completely different than Freshman ball from a speed and strength standpoint, the sooner they adapt, the better.

I have avoided commenting on this thread because it is an internal Willard thing however this one caught my eye... "I think its a fair statement, but I also agree with moneyball's statement regarding 2 years from now, willard may have a team comparable to some of the best teams in willard's history"WOW..... I will let Scarlet educate as needed of if necessary as once again this is a Willard thing... We agree here portwalk but I don't want to offend anyone. If this team ended up 25th best in Willard history I'd do cartwheels. If the freshmen were that awesome they'd all be starting on a 3-4 win varsity squad playing a weak schedule. I do think in 2 years if everyone stays on course, the 8th grade situation doesn't run anyone off... we can have a very nice group of kids. I won't put higher expectations on them than that, and just enjoy the ride. Fair points, and its unfair of me to put that expectation out there, point made, however it is fair to be optimistic about the future, which I am

Oh my goodness, as if this couldn’t get any dumber. Comparable to the best in Willard’s history? Come on man, I’m not even a Willard fan and know that’s laughable. So Willard is going to go from consecutive seasons of less than 5 wins to one of the best in Willard’s history? You’ve seriously gotta be just messing with us right? Like, you did that just to lighten things up right? For someone who's not even a willard fan you sure do spend most of your time following willard topics on here, you're as transparent as they come and your shtick is getting tiresome, why don't you just move along...certainly you have more important things to do, as most people with oversize opinions of themselves do (so they think)

Define easier? If you are referring to playing schools with the same number of boys in high school verses playing teams with 25-30% more boys (old NOL teams), the playing field is now leveling for them. Define leveling for them? If you mean down grading their schedule to play and easier schedule than we are agreeing. If I said less challenging instead of easier would that be better for you? I was not trying to offend only stating the changes in their schedule SHOULD improve their record. I think its a fair statement, but I also agree with moneyball's statement regarding 2 years from now, willard may have a team comparable to some of the best teams in willard's history

Wait, let me go back and read his original post.....thats what i thought, no mention of 100 "qualified" applicants.....just 100 applicants, u added that adjective to try and support your point, foolish on your part, wouldnt surprise me at all if there were 95 wannabes in willard that applied for the job and had zero qualifications

salute to teachers at every school, even our rivals. You guys work with two hands tied behind your back like never before. There are so many jobs that this is the case. I worked part time (summers & weekends) at a local restaurant, and customer service jobs are some of the hardest. Maintaining composure while customers are angry and taking their day's frustration out on the employees. My husband works in the automotive industry and the pressures there with meeting the demands of his wholesale people, keeping his bosses happy, and monitoring his employees is a job I wouldn't want. Just like any jobs - are their people out there that are not good at their job? Yes. But we can't hold everyone in that field responsible for the actions of the minority. If I treated every server or cashier rudely because of one bad experience - then I would not be a very happy person. I try to keep all that in mind when dealing with an upset parent (thankfully - rarely). I don't know what their day up to the point where we're dealing has been like. And sometimes, unfortunately, teachers and coaches are the easiest on which to take that frustration out. Is that to say that every teacher or coach is always right? Absolutely not. But please do not lump us all together. I take pride in my job. I work hard to make sure the lessons I construct are appropriate for the different learning styles within my classroom. I love working with my kiddos. The rewards I get daily from giggles, smiles, and the "aha" moment are worth everything to me. I take offense when people say I answer to them because they pay my salary. We all pay taxes. I answer to the children that I teach. Take note, Picabo is a voice of reason and civility. We can all agree to disagree, but one thing we all have in common (hopefully), we want our children to be the best that they can be.

Willard has different/higher standards so what you are saying Willard has higher standards such as allowing coaches to publicly deface kids, grab kids by their shirts, chase refs into locker rooms and harass...etc etc....are those ok standards in your book? maybe we should stop overlooking the problems and start holding coaches kids parents and administration accountable...it starts from the top and filters to the bottom..why should kids behave when their "mentors" are not ? NO WYANDOT...different/higher standards relative to eligibility, that's all I meant.

Well every parent watches the same OHSAA video which clearly states what the OHSAA policies on eligibility are and then signs a paper. If Willard has additional requirements I don't know. Even so, if he knows the policy and still chooses to fail the class he is the only one at fault here. Blaming the administration because a kid chooses not to do his work in class is pretty stupid. Willard has different/higher standards

The athlete knew the expectation, well in advance. The athlete was given ample opportunity and chose to go a different course. In the process, the athlete chose to let his teammates down, coaches, etc. If I'm Broc's parents, and he's looking for answers, I tell him to go stand in front of the mirror.

I was at the game too as my son plays for Clyde.. 1) Who Burnt the popcorn lol. Killing me smalls! 2) I know there is a huge scramble for officials with all the HS snowouts. I've had several back out of contracts at the MS level to take HS games. Then have one get hurt, it was really rough to watch. Did the best he could for sure. 3) Willard doesn't look terrible. 4) Finding and getting quality coaches is an issue everywhere. Believe me. We did not have coaches until Sept (8th grade) and Late Oct (7th grade). Clyde looked like a different team last nite, not taking away anything from Willard's effort, however, is Clyde missing a player or 2 from earlier in the year?

I had a chance to watch the Willard 8th yesterday. They were missing their top player because off illness I'm guessing so that affected their team ability to score and get the ball up the court. I'm going to say this group has the look of a team that has about 3 kids who have played a significant amount of hoops. The Paxton boy would make 4. I also kinda think some kids on the team are not there yet from a maturity standpoint. Kids mature and grow at different ages. I'd say there were at least 4 or 5 who had athletic skills, but maybe just haven't played enough basketball to excel on the court. If they stick with it, and it's their passion I'm guessing they could mold into a better group going forward. Coach Devier is a football coach first and foremost and if it's true he's doing it because no one else would, it's not an ideal situation,, I'm gonna say that's a tad disappointing. The reason I say that is because I cannot imagine there was not a better fit available. It's really not fair to the kids, especially if his college teaching schedule makes it so he has to miss practice. I don't pretend to know the whole situation with him, I'm sure there's more to it. As far as his game coaching basketball ability, It looked more like a guy managing an intramural team and getting kids in and out of the game rather than much strategy. Being that the current skill level is what it is, he was doing the best he could with what he had. I do not believe he lives in Willard so he's doing quite a bit of driving back and forth and that's a large time commitment for probably not much pay, so he's to be commended for that . In this day and age, the winter season is important for Head football coaches to manage an off season program even though it is voluntary. Weight lifting and strength training is very important and it's almost a season unto itself for a football coach. I see him on twitter and with his posts I can tell he's trying. I bet the guy feels like there isn't enough hours in the day. Last years 8th grade had a number of kids who were quite a bit further along in maturity and skill level. The fact that some are playing Varsity and JV would validate that claim. I think last year those kids, because of that skill level, made his job was much easier . Nice post buckeyekid. I think you hit the nail on the head with some of your comments. There are situations where a seasoned basketball coach would have called a timeout here or there in critical situations and as you stated, he just doesn't have that seasoning. They could have won that game last night but it was the first time, at least from the portion of the 8th grade games I've been able to catch that the team played with passion and determination. The laurence kid and lopez kid played the best game i've saw them play yet, they looked like different kids from what i've saw in the past. The ball movement and defense was pretty good. if they continue to play like this the rest of the year it should be exciting for them. on a side not the 7th grade won on a buzzer beater and the excitement in that gym when that kid hit that shot was electric, 8th grade boys rushed the court and it was a special time for that team. Nice win flashes 7th and nice effort last night 8th. I agree, good summary. The 8th boys played harder than I've seen all season. The 2 boys you mentioned had their best games of the year. One thing I did notice about this game was the way Willard scored most of their points...in transition.....getting up and down the floor. There were very few baskets made in offensive sets. Something I've noticed the past couple games, when they get down by 12/14 points early they usually fight their way back by using more ball pressure/trapping and scoring in transition. I think they are much better offensively when they are pushing the ball in transition and not slowing down running set plays.

Shelby 7th over Willard by a lot Shelby 8th over Willard by a lot Willard Middle School Ball is in BAD shape Things looked promising after last 2 games Took a big step backwards tonite just my opinion but that’s a little bit of a knee jerk reaction to one night. If they had been looking promising the last 2 games, don’t let just one night stop that. They’re middle school kids, who knows what they’ll do most nights. It may be a bit of a "knee jerk reaction", hopefully you are correct, I've been known for those. However, this group of kids (8th) are playing teams they beat/were competitive with last year, and appear to be completely lost this year. Offensive sets are totally out of sink, defensive intensity is non existent, can't defensive rebound, they look defeated (like they don't care) after 5 minutes into the game, I think the entire middle school program is a mess!!!

So I wonder if you guys that think you have a clue know that I have heard directly from the coaches that the average attendance for the 8th grade basketball team over Christmas break was 5.. that's not even half the team showing up to practice everyday but you guys want to blame the coaches for the problem in that class! Don't think that's how it works Taking the lead of their coach I suppose. If it is true and the coach isn't committed why should the players? Get your head out of the sand. My son tells me that he talks to these 8th graders and the coach will often show up an hour late and misses when he wants, someone will cover. I guarantee these 5 that showed up love the game of basketball and have parents that demand they be there. However, I'm sure on game day the fact that they showed up over Christmas break will not even be acknowledged by this coach because the other kids who may have a little more talent and feel they didn't need to show up, will still start and play because that is what it is about, right. That's the reality pal. Dead nuts correct, regardless of what Willardfan thinks he knows.
