Devastating loss for American Maura Abbott in women's road cycling today. After a horrible crash by the lead cyclist - Abbott took over and remained in the lead until the final seconds of the race. She was passed by 3 riders who looked like they were running on full tanks as she just ran out of gas. She would have been the first American woman to win gold in road cycling since the 84 Olympics! A total class act in her comments after the race. I get so frustrated with reporters asking, how did that feel to lose? Her answers were very respectful and classy - far from what I'd want to say. According to the Dutch Cycling group - their cyclist who crashed is in stable condition with a severe concussion and 3 small fractures in her lumbar spine. Very scary crash to watch!

This is taken from the Anthony Wayne school athletics website. Being a bigger system - they include hockey, lacrosse, and gymnastics among their varsity sports.
The Anthony Wayne Local School district and high school athletic department often receive questions regarding the difference between Anthony Wayne High School varsity sports and club sports that use the name of “Anthony Wayne.” Since the name “Anthony Wayne” is not patented, the school district allows clubs to use the name “Anthony Wayne” as do several other community athletic groups.
There are definitely differences between AWHS varsity sports and “club” sports; however, the two most distinct differences are funding and NLL (Northern Lakes League) and OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) recognition and adoption. Club sports do not receive any funding from the Anthony Wayne Local Schools Board of Education and/or the AWHS athletic department. Approved/adopted Anthony Wayne varsity sports receive full or partial funding from the Board of Education and/or athletic department. The Board of Education typically pays for the coaching salaries and transportation costs for each approved sport. All other expenses such as: uniforms, equipment, event workers, entry fees, and official’s costs, are paid for through athletic department revenue. Athletic department revenue is generated from event gate receipts, season pass sales, concessions sales, fundraising, booster club donations, and individual donations. In recent years, athletic department revenue has also been used to supplement transportation costs.

that being said I don't really trust Maxpreps.com for that kind of information. I agree that Maxpreps isn't the most reliable source - I could not find any info regarding lacrosse on either the Bellevue or Seneca East school websites - and Maxpreps listed both as having teams. However, I posted the site as someone asked where teams were located and that did show that in our area you would be traveling to Toledo or Cleveland. Maybe someone familiar with the Bellevue and Seneca East systems could post if they have club teams or not. A lot of times, clubs get bumped in with the school name - even if there isn't school affiliation. I know that happens with indoor track - not necessarily school sponsored - but in many tournaments the athletes have to register under a school name; and often wear uniforms with the school colors. Again, for smaller systems - indoor track is left up to individual athletes and their families to pursue, while in the bigger districts (Toledo & Cleveland area schools) the team is school sponsored, either as a club sport or varsity sport.

www.maxpreps.com/state/lacrosse/ohio.htmThis site has some info about lacrosse teams & conferences in Ohio. When I was in Wooster, we even had club teams playing at the 5th-6th grade level - much like our Junior football programs. As I recall, they did have to travel quite a bit for weekend tournaments - Columbus and Cincinnati areas. The clubs were for both boys and girls and there was quite a bit of interest. Wooster is significantly larger than most of the school systems in our area - about 4,000 students (including preschool and alternative school). I think like any of the recent sports that have taken hold in our schools - bowling, swimming, and further back soccer - you explore the interest as a club sport and it can build from there. As far as football - lacrosse helps footwork, hand-eye coordination, endurance, and there is quite a bit of contact.

You didn't specify DI only. Heres's another fun song from D3 - the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. I get goosebumps everytime I hear the bagpipes and watch at home games as the bagpipes lead the football team down the hill onto the field where the rest of the band is waiting. static.psbin.com/9/b/fq2rc1v66kzo5j/exitscotland.mp3

Our focus is centered on two things - one, the quality of the march-like music, and two, how people react when they hear the music. Interesting topic. I think the reaction is of people is directly tied to their emotions of the school - brought on by the song. Music brings forth so many emotions and memories. So fans react . . . to all of that. And a good song can evoke from even the hardest heart. OSU has two fight songs - the older is Across the Field; then also, Buckeye Battle Cry. The excitement of the fans when both play - and then when you get to "Drive, drive on down the field," it is deafening to be in the stadium singing your lungs out! Then there is Script Ohio! I know it is not the fight song, but it is probably the most amazing thing to be a part of at a football game. If you've ever been in the stadium as the band starts that song and the marching and the fan reaction - WOW! Leading up to the culmination of the dotting of the "I." There is nothing like being present for that moment. I was blessed to witness many games as my father had season tickets. As a child - the highlight of the day for me was watching the band. Later in my teen and adult years - the game was the focus, and although the team might have disappointed (esp. in the Cooper years) the band NEVER did. Many thanks to Jim Tressel for resurrecting the tradition of the players singing "Carmen, Ohio" after the game - win or lose. Those are the reasons are the OSU band is TBDBITL!

Watched an interview with Holly Warlick - current coach of the Lady Vols and former player for Coach Summitt.
Coach Warlick stated that Coach Summitt's players had a 100% graduation rate! Wow. Summitt believed that discipline in the classroom translated to discipline on the court.
I grew up watching Summitt coached teams, but the more I learn about the character of this woman, more I am convinced we lost a true legend.

From MSN Sports:
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Pat Summitt, the winningest coach in Division I college basketball history who uplifted the women's game from obscurity to national prominence during her 38-year career at Tennessee, has died. She was 64.
With an icy glare on the sidelines, Summitt led the Lady Vols to eight national championships and prominence on a campus steeped in the traditions of the football-rich south until she retired in 2012.
Her son, Tyler Summitt, issued a statement Tuesday morning saying his mother died peacefully at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most.
"Since 2011, my mother has battled her toughest opponent, early onset dementia, `Alzheimer's Type,' and she did so with bravely fierce determination just as she did with every opponent she ever faced," Tyler Summitt said. "Even though it's incredibly difficult to come to terms that she is no longer with us, we can all find peace in knowing she no longer carries the heavy burden of this disease."
Summitt helped grow college women's basketball as her Lady Vols dominated the sport in the late 1980s and 1990s, winning six titles in 12 years. Tennessee -- the only school she coached -- won NCAA titles in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1996-98 and 2007-08.
Summitt had a career record of 1,098-208 in 38 seasons, plus 18 NCAA Final Four appearances.
She announced in 2011 at age 59 that she'd been diagnosed with early onset dementia.
She coached one more season before stepping down.

Thoughts on the game:
1. While not the prettiest effort - it was a team effort. James - 27 points, Irving - 26 points, Smith - 12 points, Thompson & Love - 9 points each, Shumpert 6 points, Jefferson & Williams - 2 points each Love - 14 rebounds, James - 11 rebounds, Jefferson - 9 rebounds * All 8 players that saw court time - scored & rebounded
2. Intensity & Composure - you could see it in LeBron's face from the start - this was our game. * We're used to seeing LeBron's monster dunks, but the monster blocked shots! When he came flying out to get rid of Iguodala's shot at the end - that's when I was totally secure with our win.
3. Love showed up to play. * His +/- 19 proves that. We did better tonight when he was on the court. That's what the Cavs needed.
4. Free Throws - Thompson was 3/4; and the team made 21 of 25. Necessary!
5. Rebounds - We outrebounded GS 48 - 39; with 18 fastbreak points to their 7.
Such a great game! 20 lead changes, 11 ties, such a change from the first 6 games.
6/19 - My daughters' birthday and they were convinced that the Cavs win would be their present. They were correct!
As much as I disliked Curry & Green with their crybaby antics - was impressed that they stayed on the court to congratulate Cavs players. Showed some class.

Wow . . . wow . . . wow!
Amazing game - so many things to think about. Can't wait to rewatch and just enjoy, as I was watching most of the second half between my fingers.

Concussions are strange - I wonder how much Kevin Love has been affected. He seems a step slower and some of his shots are surprising misses.
We knew a young lady who suffered a concussion, and went through protocol. Her first game back she seemed fine, but then new symptoms appeared a week later that dogged her the rest of the season and into the next sport.
She said her brain knew what to do - but it felt like her body couldn't ever catch up. It's scary.

Interesting perspective on ESPN radio today: After last night's shenanigans with players and Curry's wife, Warriors are the new thugs in town. Everyone else in the country will be rooting for the Cavs to win.
Another thought - yes, no team has ever been down 3-1 and won the championship. However, no team has been up 3-1 and lost the championship. Again, the thought is - the Cavs are playing to win; the Warriors are playing to not lose.
I'll take our team led by LeBron anyday! I like our odds going into Sunday night!

Brad Sellers on the game tonight, "LeBron has put us in a position to win. The Caveliers believe that they belong here now."
This statement is so true. I think their is so much motivation going into Sunday!
The Warriors will be playing to 'not lose' - which is much different than the Cavs who will be playing to win!

One word: COMPOSURE! The Cavs kept theirs, the Warriors did not.
Sunday will be tough - but it is doable! Look at all the people who did not believe we would even have a game 6.
Our defense has been fabulous and LeBron is really leading this team. Tonight he stated, "Records are meant to be broken," when it was pointed out that the Cavs are only the 3rd team having been down 3-1, to force a game 7 - but neither before won.
This is the Cavs record to set!

Physical play and long post-season favors Cleveland. Warriors look tired. I think this is true. When the Cavs play together and go after the ball - they seem unstoppable . . . but when they give half-*** effort - whew! LeBron played very physical - hitting the outside shot as well as going hard to the basket! The other guys seem to take his lead and play up. The 4th quarter of game 5 looked as if GS had given up - similar to how we played in our losses - just seemed to stop trying. If all show up to play Thursday night - the Cavs'll be in good shape! I am looking forward to another good game!

First half - Cavs played defense and controlled the tempo of the game.
Second half - a different team - Cavs just couldn't get into sync.
I don't like our odds going forth.
Will be interesting to see if the league reviews and does anything regarding Green's actions.

The big tell will be if the Cavs can do it 2 games in a row.
I'm not thinking about games 5 or 6 until we get past game 4.
It won't be easy, but hopefully the Cavs are finding the right mix out there. Jefferson just brings a different energy to the court when he's out there - they were pumped!
Whether that was the home court atmosphere, his start, or the motivation to prove themselves . . . remains to be seen.

This is embarrassing! We're not even getting beat by their best players ~ like the announcers said, it is Golden State's supporting cast.
One big difference I see is that they are playing defense and rebounding. We're not.

Ugh! Not the start I envisioned - nor do I recognize this team. Missing the bunny shots underneath . . . not rebounding - letting GS have their way. So frustrating to watch.

I'm feeling the Cavs in this. Too much on the line for them to not win. They've tasted disappointment and have a lot to prove to everyone.
I am not a Browns fan - used to be - grew up as one - long story for another day. I get the Cleveland disappointment factor. As a Browns fan, my husband is too beaten to get too hopeful for the Cavs.
I think the "stars" will align and we'll be alright!

I'm not sure that it is a bad thing for the Cavs to play the Warriors.
Last year's loss left a bad taste in their mouths. Knock on wood . . . they are healthy and play well when they play together!
That being said, Klay Thompson scares me ~ his shooting last night was amazing!
