Wooster in recent years has always been good at offensive rebounding to the point they have averaged double digits in that category. So that is not uncommon what you are describing.

And I think Shelby was still thinking they were on top the world from that Lima senior win and that Wooster was just gonna give them a win.. they did not play with the same chip on their shoulder as Lima game. As a Shelby fan it was nice to see the wake up call because I questioned some things before but in the last 3 games I’ve seen loney make adjustments that a lot of people questioned and so far have proven to be successful.

Being questioned is normal for a very young coach. Loney will have to start winning some big games before he is given the credit outside of his own locker room. As of now he has a losing record as a head coach (30-41 before this season) He walked into a loaded Shelby team, went 18-6 last season with loses to teams that he was probably favored to beat. This season doesn't help much with teams dealing with shut downs and having player bounce in and out of lineups. With his roster talent, if it is legit, he should be a favorite to win a district title and that will remove some of your need to question him.

But a lot of people don’t realize he stepped into a program at ridgedale that hadn’t had a winning season in 12 years. His first year I know he won 2 games second year I believe 12 or 13. I had a son that played for him at ridgedale. But I agree he’s a young coach and has proving to do. I just don’t get where you say he walked into a loaded Shelby team last year yes Pugh was there. Pugh averaged 15.8ppg as a sophomore i believe. Lantz wasn’t anywhere of the player he is now. He had great athletes who never had great success. No league title or district experience. I guess we have two different opinions on “loaded” and you can’t say the Lima senior game wasn’t a big win.

Taking over a program with a 6'6 Division I player and other returning starters from a winning team. That is taking over a "loaded" team. Loney has done well. Talent is there to win district and more.

In his second year at Ridgedale he went 10-14. Lantz was 4th leading scorer behind 2 seniors and Pugh when he was a soph. As a coach's son he was going to be what he is regardless. Not many are the player as a soph that they are their senior season. I agree. Shelby has had maybe 2 losing seasons over the last 15-16 years. That is a good program with talent and stable youth development. Then walks in a 6'5 soph transfer that averages 17pts a game to a program already having success. Before the MOAC, playing in the NOL or SBC what much different. Plus playing in one of the toughest D2 districts in the state. As I said before with his roster talent and 18 wins last year and potentially similar this year, a District Title should be expected and will prove many things.

Why would it make a difference if Pugh is playing the PG or the SG spot. Wouldn't the same defender be guarding him at either position? I'm not implying that his isn't hard to guard but I would say a team is going to matchup on him with the same defender because of his size/skills regardless if he is PG or SG or SF. If you didn’t watch either the last two games then you haven’t seen what I’m talking about. As a PG he is bringing the ball up the court and is able to build up momentum and is able to dribble around people. When he isn’t bringing the ball up the court the other PG’s are rushing up the floor and getting it to him on the wing and he is still able to dribble around defenders. Maybe these last couple teams didn’t have the people to match up properly with him. That I can’t answer. But what I can say is that at 6’6” with really good ball handling ability he is causing problems regardless of who is guarding him. And if teams want to try a smaller, quicker player on him (Ontario), then his coaches are challenging him to get on the blocks and take advantage of his size and strength. What makes abundant sense, is having by far the best ball handler AND player on the team, as well as by far the best playing in North Central Ohio have the ball in hands as much as possible.

Just saw a tweet on the Shelby Basketball page they have picked up a game with Spire Institute to be played 2/9 in Shelby. Yes, the same Spire Institute that Lamelo Ball was at just a few years ago. They still have one open game to fill yet. Will be interesting to see who fills that spot. Obviously looking at anyone at this point in time.

I spoke with coach loney today. Spire has a post grad team and a high school team. Kid from Sandusky is on post grad team. And Willard filled the Shelby game with Ontario when richland co was purple and Shelby was not aloud to play.

Shelby up 36-35 at the half. RV with a really strong second quarter to get back in it. Shelby had a double digit lead after one. Bell with 19 already. I would expect Pugh to park himself inside and take advantage of his size over Bell.

Shelby wins 85-74 after being down 63-53 at the beginning of the fourth. Shelby outscores RV 32-14 in the final quarter. Pugh finished with 39 to set a career high. Not sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there has been anyone from Shelby to score 30+ points in three consecutive games since Larry Seigfried was a Whippet. If anyone knows that I’d be curious to know.

I am impressed that “no talent” R Valley was ahead but could not hold on in the 4th. 😉

The combination of Johnson and Bell combined for over 50 points. Any other night you would think that is enough to get you a W. Very scrappy team. They make up for their lack of size with hustle and aggressive defense.

And I’m sure plenty of colleges are on alert now, if he wasn’t already on their radar.
