This will be trip #10 to State for the mighty Titans of OG, and 3 in a row Right now OG is the best public school program in Northwest Ohio if not the whole state. They just keep bringing in homegrown players. They're girls aren't bad either.

i can never get our boys team there but Huron will be represented for the 2pm game saturday for the national anthem! looking forward to that. Things just haven't worked out for the Tigers as far as the state final four is concerned. I recall in the early 70's when Coach Hagy had Lou Wargo, Tom Merrill, Dick Garton, etc. Undefeated in the regular season only to lose to Genoa with Ron Hammye in the district. I think Genoa had another yeti almost as big as Hammye. There were many of us that thought that the Tigers had a decent shot to advance. Alas, Class AA was loaded then. Genoa beat Huron by 12 followed by Genoa getting spanked by Delphos St. Johns to the tune of around 20 iirc. Delphos played Elyria Catholic in the semi-finals. Ready beat DSJ comfortably in the title game. How many Huron teams have been as good or better than that team? When Genoa beat Huron that year I was convinced that Genoa had to be for real only to get handled by DSJ. What I remember about that Blue Jay team was that they had identical twin brothers who were studs, Dan A. and Dan J. Grothouse. They weren't very big guys but were talented, they played together at Findlay College if memory serves. That was really the first I ever even heard of Delphos, being from Sandusky and all. Or perhaps I just lived a sheltered life. Fast forward just a few years and I am marrying a girl whose relatives are all from Delphos. It didn't take long to get caught up on how successful DSJ had been over the years. And if you are looking for trouble on a weekend you can get your butt kicked pretty quick in Delphos. Tough town.

District Dino had some pretty good teams but Ontario and Wynford were always there waiting. Surprisingly a .500 team in the 98-99 season that featured Jim Fisher and Greg Cobb got hot at tournament time and were District champs and then beat Metamora Evergreen in the Regional Semis before losing a close game to Coldwater who eventually made it to the title game.

This is what I think the State games should go.
Division I Semis Pick Central/Centerville should be a great match-up but I give the edge to Centerville. Hoban should beat St. John's easily.
Final- Centerville over Hoban.
Division II Semis Chaminade/Lutheran West should be another great match-up, I give the edge to Chaminade. Buchtel/Ready- Ready should beat Buchtel easily.
Final- Chaminade over Ready
Division III Semis Africentric/OG could be the game of the weekend, I give OG the slight edge, but it could be toss up and I truly believe that the winner from this game will be State Champs. Lutheran East/Harvest Prep could be another great game, I am going with Lutheran East.
Finals- OG over Lutheran East
Division IV Semis Crestview/Hiland- I give Crestview the edge, seen them play a few time and they look long and athletic. Richmond Hts/Russia- Richmond Hts. will win, but it might be closer then what people are thinking.
Finals- Richmond Hts. over Crestview

Norwalk alum, Dave Sweet I know Dave and saw him play HS ball. He won O-G's first state hoops title but his predecessor Ron Neikamp would like to have a word about putting O-G on the map. Neikamp won over 200 games as a high school coach followed by almost 600 wins at Findlay College/University. To his credit, Dave stayed at O-G his entire career. His son Eric is trying to get Oak Harbor back on the basketball map.

Side note - Dayton CJ has a player George Washington III who originally committed to OSU and then switched to UM once OSU got the kid from MN who was rated higher .
A number of interesting games I’ll be following.

Hord and Shuck were underclassmen when Keith Diebler was a senior at CC. I never saw Diebler play, but I did get to see the other two. Shuck wasn't flashy but he could rebound and was good in the post. He was the leading scorer their senior year. Played center at Indiana (football) and signed as a free agent with the Cowboys. He went into coaching and wound up as the HC at VMI. Hord was very athletic and flashy and easily one of the most memorable high school players I ever saw. I don't know what ever became of him. They were both HM All-Ohio.

It's II Ontario "struggled" lately, and I should have made the connection because Huron was III many years
