The only sport that the Colts were not moderately successful in was football during their tenure in the OCC. 5 years prior to the arrival of current coach, they were very competitive.
Drew Pasteur's picks for week 5

OK, week 5 is up and things are getting heated up in conference. Wooster got off the snide last week and now West Holmes or Madison gets to this week!
Ashland at Mt Vernon - Ashland won 49-36 last year. Probably not as much scoring as last year but the outcome the same. Ashland 28-14
Senior at Maple Hts. - Tygers week for the non-com game. QB back which opens up passing game but soph qb did a good job in running game. Mustangs are 2-2, coming off a loss to University School. TY 35-21
Lexington at Wooster - Hard game to figure! Wooster lost to Orrville while Lex blasted them in 2nd half. Both teams trying to stay in race for title but Wooster seems to be improving. I'll go Wooster at home 21-20.
Let's give a shoutout to the Clear Fork Colts after whining about OCC competition for years, getting off to a 4-0 start in the MOAC. Looking to go 10-0 before getting crushed by Shelby somewhere in the playoffs!!!
Game of the Week- West Holmes at Madison. Both teams 0-4 coming into the week. Both teams want to throw, so hopefully this game ends before 11pm so the News-Journal can make their deadline.....oh... never mind. The Knights showed some grit vs Senior last week while Madison has 6 foot 12 Kyle Jackson for go routes. Even though it's at Madison, I'm going Knights 34-Rams 28. Share your thought

Interesting week in OCC as league play starts. Ashland has to travel to Fed league team Uniontown Lake. Tough game for the Arrows on the road vs a good, not great team. Lake 35-31
West Holmes at Senior- WH put up a good fight against a good Bellevue team last week and Senior might be without their QB. Defense will prevail. Senior 34-7
Lexington at Mt Vernon - A pair of 1-2 teams that, on paper, appear to be evenly matched. Lex righted the ship last week in the 2nd half vs Orrville (which beat Wooster), and the Yellow Jackets lost to Buckeye Valley. This game should be over early (I mean time wise) as both want to run the ball. Since it's at MV... MV 21-14
Madison at Wooster - A pair of winless teams face off in Generalville. Wooster has played the better schedule and could be ready to eat some mutton. Woo 42-7.
OCC report for week 4.

It's too bad that instead of Harding playing Newark and Mansfield Sr playing Toledo St Johns that they aren't recapturing the glory days of the Buckeye Conference and OHC to play each other in week 3 before conference games.

Long way to go but Ashland at Senior on Oct 6 should be the conference title game. Homecoming game for Senior.

Some good TRAC crossover games this week. Obviously Ross/Sandusky is a headliner but Mansfield Senior at St Johns should be fun too.

According to the MNJ Football Preview portion of their paper, it said that last year Senior had 3 Freshmen starters on their O-line. I had no idea. President Fillmore, Senior had 6 freshmen start last year. 3 OL, Grose at WR, Caudill at TE and LB and Irving at NT. Never seen anything like that before in my 60+ yrs.

Outside of Ashland QB's can you name one from that big boy conference that has been an above average passer in the past decade? Being the athlete he is, it should be easy for him to become an average passer in his first year. He will be a monster as a runner for a QB. JMO Jalen Reese Mansfield Sr., currently at U of Toledo, broke all of his Offensive Co-Ordinator's passing records for the Tygers during his tenure, so there's one besides Ashland.

4 interviews finished. 8 more tomorrow. Todd Krill is likely to retire after the 17-18 school year. Final 2 or 3 candidates will have a second interview next week with the final choice ready for the June Board meeting.

Which is why we need a re-boot. Fresh eyes so to speak. A little closer look at that D4 school reveals 2 players from MCS (Cobb there because of dad's blowup with Sr coach), a Madison kid and coaches son. Not a bAD d4. Ask Ashland how they liked getting beat by StP. StP didn't really beat Sr. The coaching staff lost it. Anyone who was at the game knows what I'm talking about.

Next in line Burkett, then Vern Hoffman which takes you probably back to the 40s!
Only in-house candidate would be Sykes. That's why I think they will go outside.

Probably in house AD, outside BK coach. Unless there is a great candidate that wants both!!!

His coaching contract along with the AD contract were non-renewed. Both positions are now taking applications.

Now that Clear Fork is officially out of the OCC and Wooster and W Holmes are exploring to the east, is it time that the Core 5 start exploring options south and west? The addition of Big Walnut, Delaware Hayes, and Marion Harding would be a good fit demographically. I-71 makes easy access to southern schools and Harding is more accessible with US 30 being 4 lanes to Galion. Pros and Cons? Just thinking out loud. Ironically, Lexington and Senior would be the 2 smallest schools. 7 team conferences suck.
