I would agree about Mergel, but in his defense I don't think Ontario has had the cycle of talent coming through that they had a few years ago. Not to mention the fact who ever was going to follow Joe was going to have a rough time living up to expectations. I remember Steve Gray being ridiculed by Lex fans after Collins left and they finally drove him out of town. Then he had a very good run at Norwalk winning state. Can't judge on the first year since Ontario graduated so many players. But in Mergel's second season he returned 5 players with valuable varsity experience and 2 others who had split time with jv. And with those players, he felt a freshman was the best option at point guard, so he must be very talented. In 9 seasons at Madison he coaches the OCC player of the year multiple times but never finished above 4th in the league and had single digit wins in 5 of those seasons. He won only 38% of his regular season games at Madison and in two season without him, Madison has won 51% for their games. FAKE news! This year Ontario returned 2 starters and 3 Sophomores from the JV team that got varsity minutes. THE reason Mergel had the record he did at Madison was due to the problem players he had at Madison. The reason he wanted out, the reason the AD wanted out, the reason teachers wanted out. Either dude lies or can't do 2nd grade math. In BOTH seasons since Mergel left Madison, his replacement has gone 11-11. No matter how you add it or divide, that is EXACTLY 50%. This year Mergel's winning % is 55%. a 50% improvement over last year. And Joe would not have done better this year. Unless dude is so doltish he thinks Ontario should beat THE GREAT OCC teams, Shelby RV and Harding. For some strange unknown reason dude obviously hates Mergel, to concoct such untruths. Maybe someone can enlighten us.

Still a joke. Lucas was 18-4 last season and did it again this season. Crestview has NEVER had a 20 win regular season until this year. Mansfield Christian has not won 15 since 2015, but did this year. Mansfield was 5-15 last year and have 15 wins today. Clear Fork was 0-23 last season and improves to 6 wins and are 9th when talked about having a good season?

Lucas best Crestview…he states that head/head is taken into consideration when comparing similar sized schools. Do I agree with every team’s ranking, no, but calling Jake a joke seems harsh. I think we should feel fortunate to have a writer who does so much for our local sports coverage.

I disagree. Berlin lost 6 of its last 7 games before beating Marion. Berlin lost 87-51 last Friday to a .500 Thomas Worthington team. Highlands coach was in his first year and is the Athletic Director??? He won't fire himself.

Ontario 62, CF 59
Ontario was without their #2 scorer, out with an injury. Their leading scorer was ejected from the game in the 4th quarter after getting 2 Technical Fouls for arguing with an official over getting thrown to the floor and no foul being called. CF made 3 of the 4 free throws and got the ball. Down by 9 Ontario's 3rd leading scorer fouls out. Ontario battled back from down 9 with 3 minutes left in the game with bench players making several big baskets, steals, rebounds and free throws.

Sounds like a lot of desperation from Ontario and a bit of panic from Clear Fork. I know if a coach gets ejected that he has to serve a 2 game suspension. Does that apply with players too?

They didn't play with desperation. I was surprised how cool the bench players played. A couple were interviewed after the game and said Coach Mergel has drills when they're tired that puts them in pressure situations and he tells them over and over that he believes in all them when they're in the game. The last guy on the end of the bench made a huge 3-pointer to get them rolling in the come back, his only points of the game. Then Mergel sets up an out of bounds play in a time out for a bench player that hadn't scored in the game and he drains a 3. A few seconds the same player causes a turn over and scores a layup to put Ontario up by 1, his only 5 points of the game. Then a slender bench player grabs a rebound and gets thrown to the floor from behind with 6 seconds remaining and he makes both ends of a 1 and 1 to put Ontario up by 3. CF misses a 3 pointer at the buzzer. The main reason for the win was them making 80% of their free throws on fewer tries than CF, missing only 1 in the 2nd half.

Highland's first year coach took the job because in his opinion, they did not have any quality applicants. If they wanted to he now has a full off season to recruit someone.

Hoho, that's why Mount Vernon traded the Columbus OCC for the Mansfield OCC.
He has some nice players coming back. If he doesn't do well next year I'd be concerned as an AD.

Yes, once a player is ejected from any contest they must miss 2 games. So he will be out for Friday's game and then if they will he will be out for the next game and if they lose, then he will be out the next contest he is in.

Willard comes back late to beat Galion 82-77. Galion and CF are both MUCH improved since early in the year. Credit where credit is due. They just lack knowing how to win, it's been so long I have been extremely critical of Galion’s basketball program, but I’ll give credit where it’s due. The boys played their hearts out last night and left it all out there. They didn’t win, but that’s life. I have to respect the kids and coaches for that.
