It will be interesting to see if the don't let the door hit you in the axx on the way out attitude affects any of the schools Shelby will play in the sbc the next two years in football. Little more nasty or feisty perhaps? When the fb change comes in 19-20, it will also be interesting to see what three non-MOAC-league opponents Shelby retains. Madison, Lexington, Willard, Bellevue would be the logical candidates for the three games, given their long-standing relationships with those schools. Which one of those schools would be left out? REmember computer points for wins vs bigger schools.

The key point to keep in mind is the SBC voted Shelby out after 2017-18 because Shelby wanted their cake and to eat it too (their words). They said they would not honor the contracts for football in 2018 if they got accepted to the MOAC for football in 2018. Everyone expected Shelby to leave when the opportunity came. That's not the issue. It was their desire to control situation and tell the SBC what they were going to do (in a professional manner) that caused them to be released after 2017-18. They knew that was a potential outcome before they made there desires known.

IMO, it will come down to when the CBC will allow NU and London to join. The SBC didn't give Shelby a choice. They told them they were out after this year. Saying something to the effect, " You're either in or you're out". Not being happy about them joining the SBC then announcing they were leaving before playing a game. Thus Shelby would have to play an independent schedule next year, if they can't join the MOAC next year. Ha. The SBC better get ready to keep saying that if that is what they said. It ain't over. Was just listening to phoneboard on wqel and some of the radio personalities from wmrn radio in Marion suggested more of the Marion County schools may ultimately look elsewhere as well. Would Willard be an option for the MOAC if this came to pass? Willard would be going to the Bay Division if Hopewell Loudon joins.

They have spent plenty of time exploring their options and believe the SBC is a better fit for them than the MOAC. Not sure if that would change if the N10 came calling, although I do not believe that will ever happen.

Some of the completely made up rumors on here this summer were hilarious and ridiculously off the mark. Frankly, the radio announcers probably got that idea from here. Willard won't come to the MOAC and the MOAC would not be interested. The real concern is actually Buckeye Valley. They have long drives to Clear Fork, Ontario and now, Shelby. Everyone in the conference wants BV to stay, and BV likes the conference but is getting more worried about the drive times.

I was kind of surprised to hear the Marion guys talking that way because all discussions seemed to include RV, and Pleasant for sure and also Harding in the mix. In fact in the Richland Source story about Shelby joining the MOAC John Gies, Shelby High School Principal, made the comment that they liked the conference and were comfortable with the stability of it which surprised me to hear what was said tonight. He also said that there might be a tweak or two, which I figured would involve Buckeye Valley.

Laughably wrong.). In fact in the Richland Source story about Shelby joining the MOAC John Gies, Shelby High School Principal, made the comment that they liked the conference and were comfortable with the stability of it (That's because he knows it now IS stable, the only concern being BV and BV is in no hurry to leave.). which surprised me to hear what was said tonight. He also said that there might be a tweak or two, which I figured would involve Buckeye Valley. (The tweak isn't Buckeye Valley....any potential tweaks will be to do whatever is reasonably possible to KEEP Buckeye Valley. Good acadmics, good sports, good location right off of 23. Lots of positives at BV.)

I don't see where BV would go. They are way to big to join a small school conference. So really the only other option would be the OCC. They have no business in a conference with the Olentangy schools, Westerville schools, etc. unless they get significantly larger. That's a whole different world.

Willard would be going to the Bay Division if Hopewell Loudon joins. Willard isn't going anywhere. They know they will bump to the Bay Division, which was where they wanted to be originally. Plus, it's worth pointing out (for anyone who might not be that familiar with the SBC setup) that Willard is already in the Bay division for all other sports.

It will be interesting to see if the don't let the door hit you in the axx on the way out attitude affects any of the schools Shelby will play in the sbc the next two years in football. Little more nasty or feisty perhaps? Could be interesting to see. The schools they'll be playing are ones that they have either little or no history with, so not sure how that might affect the nastiness possibility. If they go by computer points Willard would be left out. If they go by travel considerations Bellevue would be left out. If they go by longest standing rivalry then I suppose either Lex or Madison would be left out. I'm obviously biased, but I would love to see the Bellevue-Shelby series continue, and think it would be great as a yearly week 3 matchup.

And in the case of the MSL, with London now gone they have an opening. But Columbus traffic is a bear. That's why I don't think there is any rush from them to go anywhere. No perfect fits for them.

Another thing to consider. Whichever school Shelby ends up dropping from the regular season schedule could end up play them in the jamboree scrimmage. Shelby has been playing Galion in this since 2013, but will have an opening once they are in the MOAC.

BV has looked around. OCC would be the best for them but don't think OCC wants them. With the new Olentangy school coming in next year and I'm guessing joining the OCC, maybe they will look to add 2 schools. BV would struggle in FB but compete in BB and baseball. Parents have voiced their opinions about the long travels coming up.

Parents have voiced their opinions about the long travels coming up. The new Olentangy school is going in the OCC Capital with the other Olentangy and Westerville schools would be the best OCC geographic fit even though BV is undersized. But from what I have been told, those schools have made it clear that their Divison would be only for "Westerville and Olentangy schools exclusively". Have a hard time seeing Big Walnut and Delaware Hayes being told to get lost and go to a different Divison and then BV get added. But who knows with all this division and conference shifting. As for the remainder of the OCC, the OCC Cardinal would probably be the next best fit, but not sure the Hilliard schools would be jacked about that. The other 3 divisions are not good fits drive-wise. It's a weird thing about Columbus schools. If you ask them to drive anywhere north of Delaware, it's like you are asking them to go to Mars. I've heard fans from the OCC complain like they had driven to Texas, LOL.

BV in the OCC might find some trips with fewer miles than the MOAC, but those shorter trips will take double the time, fighting Columbus traffic. BTW, you think Columbus traffic is bad now. A population expert has predicted the poplulation of Columbus in 2050 will be over 2 Million. Don't wish that on the BV of the future

Jed, at this time I am not convinced the MOAC lasts much longer than the NOL did when the last school joined it.

The new AD must have different ideas than past ones. I've talked to the last couple ADs, they've had 4 in 4 yrs at BV and they were looking to move. Like I said before parents have brought this up to them that the drives to Ontario,Shelby,CF and even Galion needs to be addressed. Like in BB, if they schedule a thur road game at CF then a road game at Ontario on Saturday. I have a daughter who plays BB at BV and I'm not a fan of over hour drives in December

Gates, no one is a fan of the hour long drives. Sometimes though, it is a necessary evil. Is the OCC really the best way out?
Yes, this is a driving time post. Buckle up, everybody. Here are my rules: Google Maps, high school to high school, one-way trip, measured in MINUTES. This is my preferred way of measuring drives. I know Google Maps can have these times change based on when you input the info into the website, but I think it is more reflective of the drive. This is also NOT under wintery conditions, which changes everything.
Defiance High School joined the Western Buckeye League in 1973. I am using this as a litmus test for the purposes of having a comparable "quit 'yer whinin', millenial" example. The WBL is a ten team league with only one other member joining since Defiance, which was Lima Shawnee in 1981. Five members of this league have been in the WBL since the 40s. Fairly stable league. In football, Defiance is Division 3. The WBL, in football terms, have 5 D3 schools, 4 D4 schools, and 1 D5 school (Ottawa-Glandorf, who doesn't seem to have an issue with winning).
Defiance, per Google Maps, has an average drive time of 59 minutes and 40 seconds. I added the seconds because it was THAT close to being an hour, haha.
Defiance to...
Kenton 81 minutes Celina 76 St. Marys Memorial 69 Wapakoneta 68 Shawnee 61 Van Wert 52 Lima Bath 51 Elida 50 Ottawa-Glandorf 29
To be fair and transparent, the WBL only schedules a single-round robin for basketball. I do not know how they handle other sports. They also have only one other viable option for their league placement, which would be the Northwest Ohio Athletic League. Not that the NWOAL would ever accept them in today's enrollment situation, as they are comprised of 8 schools consisting of 2 D4s, 3 D5s, and 3 D6s.
What about today's MOAC?
Buckeye Valley to...
Shelby 67 minutes Clear Fork 59 Ontario 56 Galion 46 River Valley 24 Marion Harding 21 Pleasant 20
That is an average drive of about 42 minutes.
Let's assume the OCC Capital Division does decide to take in Buckeye Valley (not likely, from what I'm reading on here).
Westerville South 38 minutes Westerville North 38 Westerville Central 36 Olentangy Orange 25 Olentangy Liberty 23 Olentangy 19
That's an average drive of about 30 minutes. If we throw in traffic, I wouldn't call it crazy to say it would take about 35 minutes on average. Also, BV's enrollment is more than doubled by every school, some close to triple. Woof.
Let's assume the OCC Cardinal Division is the place to go.
Hilliard Bradley 49 minutes Hilliard Darby 42 Worthington Kilbourne 33 Thomas Worthington 32 Dublin Jerome 31 Dublin Scioto 30 Hayes 10
That is an average of 32 minutes, plus another 5 minutes to account for traffic. 37 minutes. BV isn't double in enrollment by ALL of these schools, but it is close.
Because I am a Shelby fan, here is Shelby in the most recent rendition of an 8-team NOL:
Fostoria 74 minutes Tiffin 57 Bellevue 53 Upper Sandusky 43 Norwalk 38 Willard 26 Galion 24
Average drive of 45 minutes, greater than BV's current arrangement in the MOAC.

I personally don't care what Buckeye Valley does. If they leave, it would eliminate the greatest drive for Shelby in the MOAC and open the door for Upper Sandusky or Willard for consideration. I am sure the desire to be in the MOAC would change for those schools if we were in such a situation where North Union and Buckeye Valley are replaced by more familiar faces like Shelby.
Either way, I think it would be a shame if BV decides to leave when, in all honesty, they have a pretty good gig. I admit I don't know what their traditions are when it comes to playing any of those OCC schools and how competitive they are.

All good info shelbyrr11 but looking at it from the BV perspective, their league in the last 3 years has added drives Shelby 67 - Clear Fork 59 - Ontario 56 - Galion 46 and that is what has them thinking. The talks about Willard and Upper adds even more driving.
Plus you may want to check your mileage map(or I have mine messed up) as I have Defiance high school to Celina high school at 60 and to Kenton high school at 74 miles

Fair enough. Everything is relative, of course. Defiance doesn't know a world where they can have several 40 minute drives to get to league opponents. BV now has to deal with bigger drives. It can be jarring. No one in Shelby enjoyed switching a shorter drive in Bucyrus with Fostoria, let alone swapping several shorter drives for now longer ones as BV is dealing with. However, I wouldn't want BV to do anything irrational for the sake of a shorter drive. Hell, I'd wait a year and see the type of attendance boost that a Clear Fork and Shelby brings before getting too skittish.
As for the talks of Willard and Upper coming, I am under the impression that the MOAC is going to stand pat with an 8 team league. Upper likes where they are at, and Willard just caused a seismic shift in conference alignments to get where they are at. I was merely alluding that if BV were to ever leave the MOAC, then Upper or Willard may feel differently about joining the MOAC. I certainly don't think it would be worthwhile to pull them in now. I can tolerate a drive to BV if it means I get a drive to Galion, Ontario, and Clear Fork.
As for the mileage map, I don't think you messed up. I am using MINUTES. You must've used MILES. I prefer minutes since mileage can be deceiving, it doesn't take many drives to Clear Fork to realize that! I edited my post to make that more apparent for others.
