Quote from Ziegler in the SR this morning: “And we made too many mistakes … too many turnovers, and too many penalties,” Ziegler added. “We’re going to learn from this and get better. There is a lot of season left. We’re going to be OK … that’s a good team we lost to tonight.” Wow! He says the EXACT same thing year after year each time they lose. I agree with the "too many mistakes … too many turnovers, and too many penalties" part, but I'm wondering when the "we’re going to learn from this and get better" part is going to happen! The "getting better" part will happen when Z leaves. That, and when Quisno is kidnapped, brainwashed, and spends the rest of his days coaching the Pirates. Ziegler's a decent guy, don't get me wrong. When it comes to getting kids ready to win games, however, his shortcomings as a motivator become painfully clear. I won't thumb my nose at Huron tradition and toughness - I've said before that they've always been ready to hit above their weight - but at some point in the near future, Perkins should be beyond this, or it doesn't belong in the Lake Div.

How in the world can a school in itty bitty Olivesburg command that kind of numbers? I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it - read the same, Willard, on Richland Source.
Unrelated: saw the Mansfield Senior's team pic, too. Forty-five kids sitting on the stands for the team pic. How is THAT possible, unless the Tygers are a tryout program? Or am I missing something else?

I still find it funny that there are four other teams the same size as us in this SBC and none of them will play us. The league is not about saving schools money in travel! I still don't get it. We should of just went independent this year. Do we really need to go into this again? Does anyone know if the Bay schools "Bellevue's size" had multi-year contracts with non-conference opponents that were signed before Bellevue and the other NOL schools joined the SBC? Independent would have been a great idea! You complain about not being able to schedule a VOLUNTARY cross over game.... good luck scheduling 10 non-conference games! I'm not up to speed on the enrollment nos. across the divisions. What Bay school(s) is/are Bellevue's size?

Yeesh. Aren't we reaching rather far away the from the shores of the Sandusky Bay with Seneca Co. and Richland Co. schools? It's the "SBC Expansion, Part II: The Quest for More Money." Seneca County is part of the new-look SBC's primary territory now... Columbian, Calvert, Old Fort, New Riegel, Lakota (parts), Bellevue (parts), Clyde (parts), and so on. I'm expecting Seneca East to come aboard soon, and I wouldn't be surprised to pick up Mohawk at some point as well. Fostoria would be a stretch, though. Agree that Richland County is a stretch... just doesn't feel right. Tell exactly why this is about money... Maybe I'm overthinking it, but why is there a need for a 20-or-so-school, three-tier conference here that stretches from the middle of Ottawa County to Richland County to the west side of Lorain County? Why not 3 separate, autonomous conferences? If some schools in one of those conferences (or divisions) have varsity athletics not shared by their fellows, they can be affiliate members for those sports only in other closeby conferences.

Will the Willard BOE fire Devier for the crap he pulled getting that kid hurt at Woodmore? Crickets... You know he was dismissed by the judge as party to that suit, right. He was named in the suit to begin with only because he was HC - even the kid's parents were really after a position coach. No feelings on the guy either way, but how many times need we rehash this for people who don't pay attention?

This conference realignment, from Lakeside to Richwood, is mind-boggling. So many different districts wants different things, to join one group and leave another for different reasons. Coaches, BoEs, and ADs need to all get a grip, and realize that, while their first priority is their own district, they can't forget that the push and pull of changing conferences more often than one does bedsheets affects everyone.
Whatever the reason: size, geography, tradition, the lure of points...just make a choice and stick with it. The multiple shuffles in a few years by some schools in these realignments, rather than the thought of realignments themselves, is grating.

Well the example of Patrick Henry was just brought up a few posts ago and I brought up Hawkins at Galion at the beginning of the thread. Those are 2 specific examples. Didn't Hawkin's say it was hard to tell his players that they should be at practice on time every day when he couldn't always be there on time? He shouldn't have felt bad. He was an adult at his job and trying his best to get there, not horsing around in the locker room or the halls.

Hanging out in his room during study hall is generally not where the guys are really supposed to be, in my experience. They usually don't get much studying done there, and if they don't have a need for a study hall, the boys should really fill their schedule with something productive instead. Don't be so literal. You get my point. The more interaction a coach has with the kids the stronger the relationship and the faster it develops. Of course there are great coaches that aren't in the building. Nobody can deny that more opportunities exist when the guy is in the building and the more opportunities the better. Not just study hall. Lunch, the hallway, the parking lot. The coach can wander into study hall, gym class, etc on his planning period. Also, I'll give a football a player a study hall even if they don't always need it. If they get good grades and are in college prep classes and doing well you don't think they could use an occasional 45 minutes to chill. They have a part time job after school. It's called football. They're kids. They have plenty of time to work their butts off when they're our age. One study hall isn't going to kill their Ivy League chances. They have a half-hour to "chill" at lunch. The boys should be challenging themselves, just as everyone else should. Does everyone else just get a 45-minute chill-out session, or just players? Lots of students have part-time jobs during the school year, whether you include varsity athletics as a "job" or not. I agree that having the coach present and visible in the halls everyday is an ideal situation vs. not having the HC present. However, my whole point was that the school community doesn't own their HC's soul and has no right to demand he work there full time if he'd rather work elsewhere. I also agree with the coach wandering the halls during his/her planning period, but maybe limit it to one day a week. If I, as a coach, did that everyday, I'd figure I'd have colleagues wondering what the hell I do all day to have so much time to waste in the halls.

Has it ever occurred to you that Willard had no full time positions available, and that in the times we live in now, schools like Willard can't just fabricate a phony position just to keep a coach in-house all day? Maybe Willard did have something to offer, but it didn't fit his teaching credentials or desires. Maybe Willard made an offer that wasn't as good financially as what he's got going on now. Perhaps he wants to take his developing a relationship with the community slower than some other coaches in other districts, dipping his toes in the water until he feels the job will be reasonably stable for a football coach. If he's not teaching there, it's pretty much on the district to find him a position, not the other way around, Also, as to the notion that coaches are extra-responsible for their players during the school-day: I've always felt that was unfair, unless the coach is also officially the Dean of Discipline. A school faculty has a shared responsibility, and as far as keeping tabs on player behavior during the day goes, there's this thing called "e-mail." No reason he can't have contact with Willard teachers to keep tabs on kids. People have to realize that teachers, and coaches, are human beings, too. We have our own professional aspirations, and believe it or not, our own personal aspirations and desires that are separate from being at the beck and call of students and their parents. It's not against the law to teach in one district and work in another so long as you can meet the contractual obligations of both positions. We are, believe it or not, grown, thinking adults ourselves, and the Willard coach, at the moment, is answerable to Willard only in the context of what he can do for the football program. You don't get to run his personal or full-time professional life. They created a position for new basketball coach Was there a sufficient student demand for whatever he is/was teaching? If not, that's skirting the line of fraud, and is certainly a waste. If positions like that are created with phony-baloney courses, the BOE would be better served surveying the community what they'd like to see added to the genuine academic opportunities, i.e., opening up a new language in the Foreign Lang. dept., business electives, AP courses, etc.

Walking the halls can be over rated. Trust between players and coaches is built in during practice, games and off season conditioning events. Sure, and hanging out in his room during your study hall. I'm not going to buy that it's not an advantage. Hanging out in his room during study hall is generally not where the guys are really supposed to be, in my experience. They usually don't get much studying done there, and if they don't have a need for a study hall, the boys should really fill their schedule with something productive instead.

I'm hearing our fairly new football coach is being allowed to teach at or near Ohio Northern this year? Very confusing, and I would highly doubt he will be back to Willard if this is the case as he will find a different job in western Ohio. How are you supposed to keep an eye on your football kids during the day? How are you supposed to talk to them during the day and build camaraderie? Task force kicking butt yet again Has it ever occurred to you that Willard had no full time positions available, and that in the times we live in now, schools like Willard can't just fabricate a phony position just to keep a coach in-house all day? Not a violation to move or open enroll to another school district for better academics. Does "better academics" = "less rigorous so a student-athlete can remain eligible," "more rigorous for a higher-quality education," or really "smaller talent pool so kid can have a chance to start?" I've said on this forum I've seen no end of transferring in and out and back into some of the schools in my area, especially by "student"-athletes. Wanna guess which of the two definitions of "better academics" they usually opted for? Apparently, one kid of a poster here had a 1.8 GPA at one school, transferred, and in one year at his new digs, earned a high 2 or so. Which is more likely: A.) Teachers at district #2 taught such circles around their counterparts at district #1 nearby that they turned this kid's life around to the tune of defying . or B.) Less demanding teaching faculty, possibly coupled with the knowledge that said student was a football transfer, made student-athlete's stay at district #2 a little cushier. (Since I can't tell you how many times of seen this myself even in my own short few years on the job, I'll tell you: it's B.) A lot of these kids and their parents are just more cowards and can't-dos, running from mostly self-created problems for which they take no responsibility. Most of these kids, parents at their side and having their back no matter what, are the authors of their own misfortunes and unhappiness. My own case in point. Student @ one school I sub for left for another of the districts I work for, allegedly because "Student" committed an unspeakable act on another one day in the bathroom. Halfway through the next school year at school #2, reports coming in of items being stolen from varsity winter athletes' lockers. "Student" was eventually caught in the varsity locker room (for players of the opposite sex, by a varsity senior of the opposite sex, no less), and eventually admitted to thefts. "Student," along with a pal he/she picked up at school #2 are now at an "alternative" school, which would be school #3 for student in 3 years. Some months later I found where the mother of "Student" had posted a Google star review for the school. She gave it one star. My eyes nearly rolled out of my head. I'm not buying this "poor student-athlete" schtick with about 90% kids that do this. Besides, student-athlete or not, when a kid transfers right smack dab in the middle of the year, guess who's job it is to get that student up to speed while keeping the class moving? Also, it seems like a rule among teens that change schools that their best bet at making friends and being the cool kid among their new peers is acting like a petulant, smart-mouthed child when dealing with the teachers that are trying their best to correct for the new, usually unannounced addition to their class mid-quarter.

Read you loud and clear, sportsfan - another year of Troy being Troy? They had a real opportunity to make great strides to build a program but the powers that be decided they had to hire the "best educator." I assume this mean another person who works 8-2 and goes home, having no real impact on the school district. I hope that's not how you feel about all of us that don't believe we have the skill or knowledge set to coach a sport alongside our teaching job.

As for the hallway incident, it bothers me as a teacher that people in the community are brushing this off as a nothingburger. He's an adult in charge of a high school wrestling a minor in that very school's hallway. I agree that the no-touching-at-all culture goes a little too far among people in a community that work with each other for so long each and every day, especially where you have teacher-mentor/student relationships flourishing. A touch on the shoulder every once in a great while, a high-five, a pat on the back, even a hug when really necessary: wrestling in the halls is the ridiculous, unnecessary extreme - that's not bonding, that's "using the pushover principal as a doormat." It sounds like this principal is a big kid, desperate to be liked when he should in fact be working between relationships of respect between himself, the parents, and their students.
It's a display of complete disrespect, and no principal worth his necktie would stand for it ever. That's just my take, though.

The board would have had to accept his resignation first. This would have been a public act - if no reporter from local news outlets actually covered the board mtg. at which the resignation was announced/accepted, the board would have likely released it to the papers, at least the Reflector, for the purposes of getting the word out to potential replacements. If there were something fishy - which I'm not saying there isn't - one would think that either Hinkle and/or the BOE would still announce it, but cook up some lie to cover themselves, whether they were on the same side or facing off against one another.
I'm not trying to suggest you're lying - my family is all teachers, including me, and we know better than most that the BOEs of public schools these days have become shady as shite. It just seems to me like an odd way to go about it, if it's indeed the case. You'd think they'd definitely want to shop the job around.
You say Hinkle stepped down, and I'm guessing you trust your source. One way to find out what happened is to contact the Reflector. Tandem Media's print entities LOVE juicy scandals, especially involving local schools; people love a juicy story about their local schools and will drive hard copy sales and clicks if it's sufficiently interesting (read: "divisive"). Pressure the Reflector to interrogate SC about it. If you don't want to get a certain mustachioed "goofball" (nicest thing I can think of) involved, which is always a good idea, then write to the school yourself. I'm actually going to take a gander at their Twitter feed and see what I will see. I looked on the district website under Employment, didn't find it. That doesn't mean it wasn't there at one point. Good luck.

Haven't seen Word One when it comes to reporting this in any of the local news outlets. Even if there wasn't a scandal, coverup, or a spat involved, the Reflector of the Ashland T-G would at least have had a blurb somewhere about Hinkle either stepping down (and the board officially accepting his resignation) or being non-renewed (also an official, public BOE action). Methinks this rumor is just another nothingburger.

It's hard for me to imagine who, at this point, would want the head FB coaching post at a small school around this area. Obviously, there's a demand and a place in these communities still, but I couldn't see myself doing it. It just seems to me that, under all the ballyhoo of every year, there seems to be a sort of worry around the survival of programs. Then again, I wonder how much of that is the fault of the Register's stories about "dying" programs.
