Pleasant beat Highland 20-6 in one half of play tonight by the varsity squads. Still some work to be done on the line but a better effort tonight.

I am looking forward to an interesting scrimmage tomorrow night between Highland and Pleasant. With all that Highland has back and Pleasant returning 14 starters it should be a good tune up for both teams. I hear that Pleasant did not have a good scrimmage against Wynford so I'm sure their coaches will want to see if some of the changes they have made are going to work or if it is back to the drawing board.

Heading out to the Pleasant/Highland scrimmage Thursday night. I will be interested to see how the Spartans look against the Scots.

Is the Marion County Track Meet results online anywhere? I have looked all over. You would think in this day and age every meet would have the results linked to a website.

MOAC needs to find a new school soon as most have a 2 year out and if BV leaves in 2 years my guess another school would need to notify their league by the end of June (that's only 3 months away) or the league will be forced to play an uneven schedule for at least a year in football (9 teams means everyone has a bye week in the league and those are tough to fill at the end of the season).

OK, here is the reason that I have been given for Highland's interest in moving to the MOAC and it is not necessarily what you might think. Varsity sports wise they are fine. It is the fact that only two other teams in the league had JV football teams, no freshman basketball teams at many other league schools and I believe the league did not have 7th grade girls basketball teams this year. At a school the size of Highland, you are going to lose a lot of kids from sports if there are no lower level teams for them to play on and get better. If you go ahead and have those teams and nobody else in your league does, it makes it a nightmare for the AD to get them games to fill their schedule. Couple that with boys and girls soccer teams who are having to play an independent schedule and now you start to see the frustration.
I don't think Highland really wants to leave the KMAC but the fact that the other schools cannot be relied upon to even produce teams at all levels of their existing sports let alone come up with teams in "new" sports like soccer is making them question the long term impact on athletic teams.

I like how the league is scheduling the games this year. Back to back days with the same school means you can't save your #1 pitcher to face a certain team each time you play them (Obviously rain outs will change this) but it means you had better have more than one stud on the mound if you are going to win the league.

Yeah they are smaller schools, but they all travel well because of history. After a couple years or if one team is particularly bad, Ontario and Shelby aren't traveling in mass to Sparta or vice versa. This is the same thinking that ruined the MOAC to begin with. More is not always better. Expansion ruined decades old rivalries with schools like Elgin and Ridgedale so that we could add schools like Alder, Upper, and Fairbanks who were clearly not a fit. When this is all said and done the MOAC will have regretted ever expanding to begin with. The league has no traditional rivalries left. There is a new budding one with RV and Harding but that conference was built on small schools that knew eachother. Small schools travel so well because everybody knows everybody and the outcomes are for local bragging rights. I mean no disrespect to any of the new teams, but when Ontario plays Pleasant....who cares? These aren't neighboring communities. They aren't even neighboring counties. The MOAC decision to ever expand in the first place has made it a league that will now be forever a league in transition. Of the ten original schools only two will remain after BV leaves. Pleasant and RV. Pleasant is a small school, yeah they have athletic resources but once North Union is gone their only "like" school will be Clearfork. Sure they'll get a bunch of football computer points but I just don't know if the league makes sense anymore. Expansion ruined a good thing. I think the KMAC which features a bunch of "like" schools is going to be a more sustainable league over the long run. I sent you a PM.

Just an FYI to all, do not be so quick to dismiss Highland to the MOAC. They have a former Clear Fork guy running things over there now and from what I hear, they are not happy with things in the KMAC. I know they were the catalyst for the pull away from the MOAC but things have changed. I can't believe I am saying this but my bet is they will be the next school to join the MOAC. The Highland Principal is a former Ontario guy. The longest trip for Highland in the MOAC would be 35 miles to Shelby I was actually talking about the superintendent, Dan Freund, who was at Clear Fork until about 2010 but having a former Ontario principal helps as well.
